
Want to boost your mood, stress less, and cut your risk of cancer, heart disease, and other health hazards? No, the answer isn’t in a magic pill — it’s between your sheets. That’s right: A little loving can boost your overall health in a number of surprising ways.
“Sex can be good for your health for many reasons,” says Amy Wetter, MD, a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist in Atlanta. “Some of these include better sleep, lower stress, improved self-esteem, lower blood pressure, and pain relief.”
And nobody says you have to be with a partner to reap these benefits. Self-pleasuring can offer sex benefits, especially those specifically related to a good orgasm.
So whether you’re coupled up or flying solo, check out this list of the healthy knock-on effects of regular sex.
1. Improved Heart Health — Yes, Sex Is Exercise
Just like any physical activity, healthy sex is good for your heart. A longitudinal population-based study published in the American Journal of Cardiology found that men who had sex at least twice weekly had less risk of cardiovascular diseases like stroke or heart attack than those who had sex once a month or less.[1]
And an observational study published in 2020 found that sex may improve your long-term recovery after a heart attack. Researchers compared two groups of heart attack survivors: those who lowered their level of sexual activity or stopped having sex at all in the first six months of their recovery, and those who went back to their normal level of sexual activity or increased it. The people who had more sex had a 35 percent lower risk of death over the next two decades.[2]
For those who worry if sex is safe with heart disease, the American Heart Association (AHA) reports that as long as the condition is stabilized, you’re likely in the clear.[3] A good rule of thumb is if you can climb stairs or walk a mile without difficulty, it’s safe to have sex, per Johns Hopkins Medicine.[4]
Sex is actually considered a rather good form of exercise: A small study showed that men burned an average of 4 calories a minute during sex sessions that averaged 25 minutes, and women burned off 3 calories.[5] That's a lot more fun than toiling away on a treadmill.
2. Sweet Pain Relief, Even From Menstrual Cramps
Just looking at your partner — or even a photo of your partner — can help ease pain. In one study, people who were in the first nine months of a romantic relationship were exposed to thermal pain in a lab. They were shown photos of their romantic partners and other attractive people, and were engaged in a word game as a distraction. Participants reported looking at romantic partners significantly dulled the experience of pain, and brain imaging showed it also increased activity in areas associated with the brain’s reward system.[6] So if you think pain might be a barrier to full-on intercourse, take a moment to really look at your lover.
There’s also evidence women may get some relief from menstrual cramps through a good orgasm. In an informal survey conducted by a privately owned sex toy company called Womanizer, 70 percent of women said regular masturbation had an impact on the intensity of their period pain. Of these women, 62 percent said regular masturbation reduced the intensity of period pain somewhat, while 31 percent said it reduced the intensity by a lot.
3. Less Stress and Lower Blood Pressure
Sex can help relieve stress by raising endorphins and other hormones that boost mood, Dr. Wetter says. At the same time, sex also lowers stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, according to research.[8]
What’s more, some research suggests sex may actually help lower blood pressure. A small study published in Sexual Medicine found that having sex the night before a blood pressure reading led to lower levels of systolic blood pressure. The more pleasurable the sex, the greater the effect appeared to be.

4. Possible Reduction of Prostate Cancer Risk
A large prospective cohort study of nearly 32,000 U.S. men found that men who reported they ejaculated more than 21 times per month, compared with those who had done so four to seven times per month, were 20 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer.[10] While more research is needed to confirm this link, it appears that frequent ejaculation may lower your risk of prostate cancer.

It’s no wonder you’ve got a more positive outlook after sex: There are biochemical rationales for experiencing improved mood as a sex benefit, from the neurotransmitters that may be released during healthy sex to the mood enhancers contained in semen itself.
Plus, your frisky play may result in a serious afterglow that can, in turn, help you bond better with your partner. According to a study that examined newlywed couples who kept a two-week sexual diary, researchers found that partners were satisfied for a full 48 hours after sexual activity. And those who were lucky enough to experience this afterglow went on to report more happiness in their relationship several months later.

Orgasm in Women: What Exactly Happens?
When women climax, "there are changes throughout the whole body, a head-to-toe experience," says Michael Ingber, MD, a physician in urology and female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at Garden State Urology in New Jersey, and a fellow of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health.

How Women Achieve Orgasm
One of the ways that women experience orgasm is through a goal-oriented four-step process first described by sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson decades ago.[1]
Excitement In a state of desire or arousal, the woman initiates or agrees to sex, and as it commences, she finds herself focusing mainly on sexual stimuli. Blood begins to engorge the clitoris, vagina, and nipples, and creates a full-body sexual blush. Heart rate and blood pressure increase. Testosterone and neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin are involved in these processes, says Dr. Ingber.
Plateau Sexual tension builds as a precursor to orgasm. The outer one-third of the vagina becomes particularly engorged with blood, creating what researchers refer to as the "orgasmic platform." Focus on sexual stimuli drowns out all other sensations. Heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration continue to increase.
Orgasm A series of rhythmic contractions occur in the uterus, vagina, and pelvic floor muscles. The sexual tension caused by lovemaking or self-stimulation releases, and muscles throughout the body may contract. A feeling of warmth usually emanates from the pelvis and spreads throughout the entire body.
Resolution The body relaxes, with blood flowing away from the engorged sexual organs. Heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration return to normal.
The Orgasm Gap
While researchers have carefully studied what happens to women during orgasm, they have also taken note that women do not have orgasms as often as men do in heterosexual sexual encounters. This is known as the “orgasm gap” and is a well-documented phenomenon among those who study sexuality.[2] However, a recent study by doctoral student Grace Wetzel showed that women who don’t have orgasms begin to believe that they are not going to have them and then indeed have fewer of them. This self-fulfilling sexual prophecy leads them to not prioritize their orgasms, which may make their sex lives less satisfying.[3]
“The more orgasms that you have in your relationship, the more you expect to have and the more you want or desire them in that relationship,” Wetzel says. “The lower frequency of the orgasm gap disadvantages women, which may explain why women devalue orgasms. And that’s significant because if they place less emphasis on the orgasm, then they’ll have less pleasure. And if they continue to orgasm less and expect less, then the cycle will perpetuate.” As orgasm is one of the biggest predictors of sexual satisfaction and consequently a satisfactory relationship, Wetzel says, “there are benefits to working on this within people’s relationships.”
How do you close the orgasm gap? You need to emphasize sexual communication between partners,[4] prioritize clitoral stimulation for couples,[5] and de-emphasize the idea that biology stands in the way of a woman’s climax. “It’s not that women are difficult to bring to orgasm,” Wetzel says, adding that there’s nothing about their anatomy, genetics, or hormones that keeps women from orgasms — most women are able to have orgasms when they masturbate. Women should take the technique that works best for them in masturbation and bring that to their partnered sex.

Clitoral stimulation has proved the surest route to orgasm. "I think that clitoral stimulation [produces] probably the closest analogue to male orgasm, where you get erectile tissue, there is release, and after release, it is uncomfortable to continue," says Steven R. Goldstein, MD, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the New York University Grossman School of Medicine.
Vaginal Stimulation, the G-Spot, and Intense Sexual Pleasure
Some women can also experience orgasm through vaginal stimulation, though it’s not super common. A study published in 2018 in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy found that about 18 percent of women could achieve orgasm through penetration alone.[6]
One group of researchers credit the G-spot, an area named and described by Beverly Whipple, PhD, RN, a professor emerita at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, and a past president of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists.
The G-spot is an area felt through the wall of the vagina, an inch or two behind the back of the pubic bone near the junction of the bladder and the urethra. It is made up of tissues of the clitoris, urethra, and paraurethral, or Skene's, glands, says Dr. Whipple. Some researchers believe that when stimulated, the G-spot causes intense sexual pleasure in some women; others question whether the G-spot is even real.
A research review published in Sexual Medicine looked at 31 studies on the matter and determined that 63 percent of women reported having a G-spot. However, in anatomic studies, some researchers could identify the G-spot’s location, while others could not. This led the review authors to conclude that its existence remains unproven. What’s more, in the studies that considered it to exist, there was no agreement on the location, size, or nature of the G-spot.[7]
This can all make it very confusing for those trying to find their own G-spot. The main thing to remember is that everyone is different. Find what’s pleasurable and works for your body.
Is There Such a Thing as Female Ejaculation?
Female ejaculation, sometimes called “squirting,” is another hot topic when it comes to how women experience sex. There’s not a ton of research on how often or why female ejaculation occurs, but there is agreement that it can happen and that it is normal.
According to a research review published in Clinical Anatomy, female ejaculation and squirting are separate. In both instances, fluid is expelled from the vagina. According to the authors, squirting occurs when liquid similar to urine is expelled from the bladder during orgasm. With female ejaculation, fluid that’s typically thick and milky is secreted from the Skene's glands during sexual activity, but it isn’t necessarily associated with orgasm. Both squirting and female ejaculation can occur at the same time. Some women may experience either or both frequently, while others may never experience them.[8]
Sensory Pathways, Stimulation, and Orgasm Generation
Women have also been able to have orgasms through stimulation of the breasts or other parts of the body, or through the use of sexual imagery without any touch at all. Researchers have even found a nerve pathway outside the spinal cord, through the sensory vagus nerve, that will lead a woman to experience orgasm through sensations transmitted directly to the brain.[9] "There are many nerve pathways that are responsible for the experience of orgasm in women," says Whipple.
The Female Orgasm: Problems Getting There
It is estimated that as many as a quarter of American women have problems experiencing orgasm, and about 10 to 15 percent have never achieved one.[10]
While physical problems can keep a woman from experiencing orgasm, emotions can play a role, too. Some sex researchers say that anxiety and depression can prevent a woman from progressing along the sexual response cycle, says Ingber. Feelings of fear, guilt, distraction, or loss of control can also affect orgasm. Similarly to men with erectile dysfunction, women can sometimes have problems achieving or maintaining adequate blood flow, says Ingber.
Treatments and Therapies to Help Women Reach Orgasm
Whether the barrier to orgasm is physical, psychological, or a bit of both, there are many ways for doctors and therapists to help you get past it.
Behavioral Interventions
Directed masturbation, sex education, and behavioral therapy are some of the means a woman might want to investigate if she cannot reach climax.
Women may also want to try different sexual devices, such as a vibrator to provide increased clitoral stimulation or a dildo crafted for better stimulation of the G-spot. “Additionally, vacuum devices can be used to improve libido and arousal,” says Ingber. “This applies gentle suction to the clitoris.”

Consulting a sex therapist could be very helpful, too. Sex therapists are specially trained licensed counselors who may be psychologists, psychiatrists, or other mental health professionals. They aim to help you get to the bottom of your sexual issues. Your therapist will help you work through emotional issues that may be contributing to sexual issues, according to Drogo Montague, MD, a urologist at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. They can help you see if issues in your relationship are causing you stress, he adds.
Let’s be real — for most of us, calorie burning isn’t top of mind when we’re about to get busy in the bedroom. But in this world of multitasking, it’s nice to know that while you’re connecting with your partner or playmate, you’re also moving your body and using up calories.
Although it might seem like a stretch to think of sex as a form of exercise, the two have more in common than you might think. For starters, both sex and exercise connect us to our bodies, says Jason Karp, PhD, a visiting professor of exercise science at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro and the author of Sexercise: Exercising Your Way to Better Sex.
“Research has shown that both exercise and sex are good for our health — and the more of each we get, the better,” says Dr. Karp.
And just as the intensity of exercise determines the number of calories used, the same goes for sex — as in, if your heart rate goes up when you’re fooling around, that’s a good start!

What Happens When You Get Physical in the Bedroom
The energy expenditure (otherwise known as calories burned) of sex can be estimated by calculating the activity's intensity, the body weight of the person, and the time spent.
While there isn't much research on the calorie-burning benefits of sex, there are small studies that focus on younger adults. In those studies, sex is considered a form of physical activity that scientists say is equivalent to climbing two flights of stairs or walking briskly.
In studies on healthy men and women, it’s estimated that sex expends an average of 101 calories (4.2 calories per minute) in men and 69 calories (3.1 calories per minute) in women.
By comparison, a 160-pound person burns about 124 calories jogging for 10 minutes, burning an average of 12.4 calories per minute, according to the American Council on Exercise.
“Whoever is taking the more active role is burning more calories — women will burn more calories during sex if they are on top. In general, men tend to burn more calories during sex than women,” says Leah Millheiser, MD, a clinical professor and female sexual medicine expert at Stanford Health in California.

It isn’t just sex that gives males the calorie burning advantage. Because (in general) men have more muscle and less body fat than women, they use more calories at rest and while exercising, according to Mayo Clinic.
Number of Calories Burned During Sex Falls Short of Regular Exercise
“Despite increases in breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure that occur during sex, it seems that sex, as a form of exercise, falls short of the cardiovascular and calorie-burning benefits of other types of exercise, like running, cycling, and lifting weights,” says Karp.
Heart rate and oxygen consumption during sexual intercourse are similar to values achieved during normal daily life activities, with sex being about as physically strenuous as walking two to four miles per hour, he adds.
Given that research suggests the average session of sexual activity lasts between 3 and 13 minutes, many of the estimates around sex and calorie burning are factoring in lots of foreplay or nonpenetrative sex. The more time you spend on oral sex, petting, hugging, and kissing, the more calories you’ll burn, says Dr. Millheiser.
Certain Sex Positions Require Strength and Endurance
Many sex positions require muscular strength and muscular endurance, which burn calories, says Karp. “These include the Standing 69, the Aerial Dancer, Arm Hang, the Squatting Cowgirl, among others,” he says. Anyone attempting the Standing 69 needs to be strong and somewhat flexible — the move requires one person to lift the other off the ground so that each participant can give and receive oral sex.
There isn’t specific research into how many calories the different positions burn, but it’s safe to say it’s in the same 3 to 4 calories per minute range, says Karp.
Getting Creative With Your ‘Pregame’ Burns Calories, Too
It takes energy to get into the mood with your partner. A 160-pound female in her thirties burns an estimated 145 calories giving a 30-minute massage. Take turns massaging each other; that way, you can both take advantage of the calorie burn (and its arousing effects).
Dancing — whether you head out to the club or make some suggestive moves in the privacy of your own bedroom — can be a fun and sexy way to connect. Bonus: A recent meta-analysis published in PLoS One revealed that dancing also promotes fat loss. A 140-pound woman burns about 100 calories during 30 minutes of dancing.

Moving more — through both sex and exercise — can have benefits for our health that go beyond fat burning, says Karp. Studies show that body image, which is enhanced with exercise, plays a vital role in sexual desire and satisfaction. But the benefits of exercise and sex transcend our sexual satisfaction and physical health — they connect us to who we are, notes Karp.
“The human experience is physical, and sex and exercise are perhaps the best expressions of our physical being,” he says. Not only can the activities connect us with other people (and sometimes, even to love) they can both help us live life more fully, adds Karp.
"Quickies" can be a fun and spontaneous treat, but couples who skip foreplay are passing up a great way to connect emotionally and physically. “Foreplay is critical, elemental, and absolutely necessary,” says Pepper Schwartz, PhD, endowed professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and sexual health expert and researcher.
While foreplay is essential, Schwartz says the term needs to be reframed. “The whole idea of foreplay is antiquated in the sense that it assumes that the real play is elsewhere. [That] this is just sort of priming the pump, as opposed to an integral part of making love,” she says.
That said, foreplay can bring couples closer whether it serves as the starting line or the destination. Read on to discover the physical and emotional benefits of foreplay, plus how to incorporate more of it into your sexual routine.
What Is Foreplay?
Foreplay, sometimes called “outercourse,” is any form of sexual activity that occurs prior to intercourse. There’s no single way of engaging in foreplay and it can mean different things for different people.
Generally, it can involve kissing, gently nibbling, caressing, and cuddling. It can also include flirty texting or talking, massage, and oral sex. If you like it a little rough, biting, pinching, scratching, and spanking can be a sexual turn on. Whatever the action, the goal is to increase sexual excitement, which can help prepare the body for intercourse. Foreplay is sometimes thought of as a warm up for sex, though it doesn’t necessarily have to lead to intercourse. Some couples find foreplay itself to be sexually fulfilling as a main event.
The Perks of Foreplay
Doing anything that's sexually arousing can help lubricate your vagina or help you maintain an erection. For people with penises, foreplay can extend an erection and even prevent premature ejaculation, according to StatPearls.
When aroused, the female body pulls the uterus up, lengthening the vagina. Called uterine tenting, this process also creates a little bit of a pool area for semen, per a review. “It's part of the reproductive sophistication of our machinery,” Dr. Schwartz says. Research involving married couples has found that 1 to 10 minutes of foreplay was associated with 40 percent of women achieving orgasm during sex. That percentage rose to 50 with 12 to 20 minutes of foreplay and 60 with more than 20 minutes of foreplay.
“When we open our minds to experiencing different types of pleasure, including kissing, touching, rubbing, and oral sex, we allow our minds and bodies many different ways of building intimacy and pleasure,” says Lyndsey Harper, MD, clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Texas A&M School of Medicine in Bryan, Texas.
Tell Your Partner What You Want
If you want more action in bed, you have to let your partner know what you want. But talking about sex can be easier said than done for some. “Sexual communication can sometimes be difficult because most of us have not had adequate education or modeling of how to have these types of conversations,” Dr. Harper explains.
Harper recommends two sentence starters to try when expressing sexual desire to your partner:
"I want you to ..."
"It feels so good when you ..."
If it makes you more comfortable, you can bring up your sexual needs outside of the bedroom, Harper adds. If you don’t know how to bring it up, she suggests starting the conversation with something like, "Our sex life is really important, and I'd love for us to feel open talking about things. Would it be okay for me to share with you some things I really like?"
Communication comfort is closely linked to trust, says Schwartz. To experience true intimacy and fun foreplay, trusting each other is essential, especially since our needs constantly change. “You've got to be able to express all those things to deal with today's body, which was not yesterday's body and might not be tomorrow's,” Schwartz says.

What Are the Best Ways to Have Mutually Satisfying Sex?
That answer is different for every couple. "I would define the best position as the position that works best for the individual or individuals involved,” says Tameca Harris-Jackson, PhD, LCSW, a certified sex educator, a sex therapist, and the founder of Hope and Serenity Health Services, a counseling center in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
There are nonphysical factors to consider, too. Take intimacy, for example. For many people, especially women, intimacy can lead to better sexual experiences because partners are comfortable and trusting enough to ask for what they desire and to try new things.
Many couples are figuring out exactly those benefits, according to research funded by the Kinsey Institute at the University of Indiana.
1. The Missionary Position or Face-to-Face

Details It's a simple sex position: The receiving partner lies on their back with their legs spread and knees bent slightly. The penetrating partner lies between their partner’s legs and guides their penis or sex toy into their lover’s vagina or anus, supporting their body weight with their arms or elbows.
The problem with the missionary position is that it’s not as good at delivering pleasure to women. The pelvis of the partner on top can sometimes stimulate the clitoris in this position, and it offers great intimacy through face-to-face contact. But the angle of the penis does not allow for deep penetration or stimulation of the G-spot (felt through a location on the front wall of the vagina and believed by some experts to be a stimulus for orgasm in women). With the woman’s body upright, the nipples can be engaged, which can lead to extra arousal. It is good for having access to the clitoris for stimulation.”
3. Reverse Cowgirl or Reverse Rider on Top

4. Doggy Style or Rear Entry

Switch It Up Some people complain that this sex position is too impersonal because there's no face-to-face contact. “If you want closer eye contact with this position,” says Bradbury, move your knees closer to your chest and arch your back so your partner can lean into you near your face and you can make eye contact. Bradbury says you can also try this position in front of a mirror so you can see one another’s faces.
5. The Corkscrew

Details Leaning forward, the receiving partner lies on the edge of the bed, resting on their hip and forearm while their partner enters them from behind. It creates a lot of stress and tension in our bodies and in our minds. Many patients that I see feel that sex becomes one more thing that they have to go, go, go and do. But sexual partners should be really with one another and feel pleasure together. Switching up positions can be very helpful to rekindle that connection. So it can be helpful and fun to try something new.”
Just because you’re having your period doesn't mean you can’t fool around. For some women, period sex can be even more pleasurable than at other times of the month.
The need for lubrication lessens during your period, and having an orgasm can soothe period-related symptoms, such as cramps.

Here’s what you need to know about having safe period sex.
Risk of Infection Can Still Happen
It’s crucial to practice safe sex while you’re having your period because you could still get or transmit an STI, like HIV, during this time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The virus and other pathogens may be present in menstrual blood. Therefore, doctors strongly encourage using a condom to decrease this risk.
Lauren Streicher, MD, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, says that anecdotally speaking, there are two reasons for this risk. “Any bodily fluid can carry HIV or [other] STIs, and [during your period], the cervix opens slightly, which might allow viruses to pass through,” Dr. Streicher says. “My message to women is you’re not off the hook as far as using protection.”
You may also be more prone to some infections in general at this time. When healthy, your vagina maintains a pH level of 3.8 to 5 throughout the month, according to research published in November 2021 in Diagnostics. But during menstruation, that level rises because of the higher pH level of blood, and yeast is able to grow more rapidly.
Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection are more likely to occur the week before your menstrual period, as research has shown hormonal changes that take place at this time of the month can cause an overgrowth of Candida, the fungus responsible for yeast infections. Intercourse during this time can exacerbate symptoms, but clear evidence is lacking for any increased risk of getting a yeast infection if you have sex during your period.
There's also the dreaded urinary tract infection (UTI). “Some women can be more prone to having urinary tract infections after intercourse,” says Dr. Coleman. “This is most likely related to bacteria being able to easily travel to the bladder with intercourse, but it may happen at any point during the menstrual cycle.”
You Can Still Get Pregnant
Yes, you can get pregnant when you have period sex, especially if you have a shorter menstrual cycle (21 to 24 days) and you have sex toward the end of your period. Sperm can remain viable in your vagina for up to five days, per Mayo Clinic, so pregnancy is possible, and it’s important to continue to use birth control.
Less Need for Vaginal Lubrication
You’re less likely to need lubricants if you engage in period sex, because menstrual discharge tends to provide enough lubrication. If you do need a lubricant, then “water-based lubricants are widely available and safe both for sex and for condoms,” says ob-gyn James Simon, MD, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC.
“Silicone and hybrid lubricants that are water-based and silicone-based are likewise safe for both sex and condoms. Oil-based lubricants, especially mineral oil-based lubricants, can deteriorate condoms — increasing the risk of breakage — and are not recommended with latex condoms,” Dr. Simon says.
It Might Be a Pain Reliever
If you experience symptoms such as cramping, feelings of sadness, or depression during your period, having sex might help you deal. Streicher says that because orgasms release endorphins — feel-good hormones like oxytocin and dopamine — in theory, la petite mort could also decrease some period symptoms, although there hasn’t been any specific research supporting this. Myth 1: People in Relationships Don’t Masturbate
Reality “People masturbate whether they are in a relationship or single,” says Justine Marie Shuey, PhD, a sexologist in Philadelphia. “Some get jealous when their partners masturbate because they feel it’s cheating or that their partner is masturbating because they aren’t good enough [in bed]. But it’s important to understand that people have different levels of sexual desire — all are totally healthy and normal, and some involve masturbation.”
Myth 2: Excessive Masturbation Can Lead to Erectile Dysfunction
Reality “Erectile dysfunction does not result from masturbation,” Dr. Spadt says. “What can happen with either men or women is you masturbate frequently and become used to a certain touch, whether it’s vibration or your own hand.” Because of this, she says, “You may become habituated to that sensation and find it more difficult to have an orgasm with your partner.”
Myth 3: Masturbation Is Not a Normal Part of Sexual Development
Reality A study published in JAMA Pediatrics that involved more than 800 teenagers ages 14 to 17 found that 74 percent of boys and 48 percent of girls masturbate — and that’s a good thing, according to Dr. Shuey. “It’s totally healthy for people of all ages to masturbate,” she says.

Myth 4: There Are No Health Benefits of Masturbation
Reality “Masturbation has a number of health benefits,” Shuey says. “They include better sleep, reduced stress and tension, fewer headaches, improved concentration, increased self-esteem, a more youthful appearance, and better fitness.” There are also a number of specific sexual health benefits for women — particularly older women — including less vaginal dryness and pain during sex.
Myth 5: You Can Masturbate Too Much
Reality Masturbation only becomes excessive if it serves as an escape from problems in your relationship, if it begins to affect your health, or if it turns into a substitute for real-life experiences. Additionally, if masturbation causes physical soreness, emotional issues (you can’t think about anything else), problems with your relationship, or habituation issues (when only the type of stimulation you engage in during masturbation will lead to an orgasm), it may be a signal to cut back, Spadt says. But very few people ever get to this point, she notes.
Myth 6: People Only Masturbate When They’re Alone
Reality “Some people masturbate together, and they incorporate masturbation into their sexual repertoires,” says Spadt. Some couples enjoy watching each other masturbate, and some like to masturbate themselves to orgasm after other forms of sexual contact. Mutual masturbation is also a great way to have safe sex and prevent unwanted pregnancy.
Myth 7: Masturbation Will Make You Go Blind
Reality “Many myths about masturbation, such as this one, come from back when people believed sex was only meant for procreation,” says Shuey. Because masturbation isn’t for procreation, it was considered problematic. “People also believed masturbation could lead to insanity, tuberculosis, hairy palms, and death,” she says. “Obviously, none of these things are true.”
Even in an otherwise healthy relationship, it’s possible for sex to get a little, well, stale. According to a study published in January 2023 in the journal Innovation in Aging, in people over age 40, just 56 percent of heterosexual adults and 52 percent of sexual minority adults (homosexual, bisexual, or other) said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their sex life.
So why are only half of people, regardless of sexual orientation, happy with their sex life? If you’ve just recently, or occasionally, noticed a slump, it may not be cause for alarm. “It's important to remember that you might be going through a phase, whether it's illness, something hormonal, or something in your family or work life — there's a million reasons that your sex life might be impacted, and that doesn't mean that it's always going to be that way,” says Shoshana Bulow, PhD, a psychotherapist and licensed sex therapist in private practice in New York City. If you’ve had so-so or bad sex since the beginning of the relationship and have chosen to stay in it, though, you may want to ask yourself why you’ve been willing to overlook it until now.
A ho-hum sex life may be as simple as not wanting to make your partner feel like they are doing something wrong. “What I've noticed is that when folks come to see me, a lot of times they may be a little fearful of expressing their displeasure about sex with their partner because they don't want to hurt their feelings,” says De-Andrea Blaylock-Solar, LCSW, a certified sex therapist and owner of Sankofa Sex Therapy in St. Louis.
When we learn about the birds and the bees, we probably aren’t taught how to have a frank discussion with our partner about sex and what exactly we want. But being able to do this just takes a little practice — and the right tools.
What Is Spectatoring?
Sexual disconnect is one of the main reasons couples land in sex therapists’ offices. In fact, it happens so frequently that there’s actually a term for it: spectatoring.
“Spectatoring refers to the experience of watching yourself from the third person during sex. From that perspective, we judge ourselves on how we are performing during sex,” says Seneka LaBonde, LMFT, a sexuality therapist and educator at PHIIRST in Philadelphia. “This can be judging the body, specific body parts, or any other perceived inadequacies.”
Many people are not completely happy with their bodies, so if you're a little self-conscious during sex, that's normal. But it can help to put yourself back in the moment to fully enjoy it and share it with your partner, by focusing on touch and what feels good, suggests Dr. Bulow.
When the rest of your relationship is good, is it really worth speaking up about the lack of fireworks you’re feeling in the bedroom?
The answer, simply put, is yes. It’s part of the unique bond you share with your partner.
“In a monogamous relationship, sex is the one intimacy that you can't have with someone else,” says Bulow. “You can travel with someone else, you can confide in someone else, but you're not having sex with someone else.”
Here are seven ways to strengthen your sexual bond with your partner and have better sex.
1. Get to Know Yourself, Intimately
Do you even know what turns you on? Many people haven’t taken the time to figure this out. And if you don’t know, you aren’t going to be able to guide your partner to do it either. “Take time for yourself, to explore your own body, its likes and dislikes,” suggests LaBonde. Self-touch and masturbation can help you determine what you’d like your partner to do, and it can help you take control of your sex life instead of leaving everything up to your partner. “Mostly, we are responsible for our pleasure,” says LaBonde.
2. Quit Faking the Big O
At some point, you may have faked an orgasm to make your partner happy — or because you’re tired and just want to move on from sex to other things on your to-do list. While the occasional fake-out may be understandable, it isn’t a good long-term strategy for your relationship. “Essentially, it's lying to your partner,” says Blaylock-Solar.
And while you think it may be doing your partner a favor, you probably aren’t. “More importantly, you are teaching your partner to stimulate you in ways that don’t work, thus setting up a negative feedback loop that is hard to get out of,” adds LaBonde. “It’s better to talk about your expectations for sex and orgasm before you start.”
Orgasm doesn't have to be the barometer by which we measure sex, notes Blaylock-Solar. “Although orgasms are great, they are not necessary to have a good time.” Instead, think of orgasm sex as just one of the types of sex you and your partner can have. “You can have a lot of pleasurable experiences without orgasm, and it tends to take the pressure off of the situation,” she adds.
3. Speak Up, But Do It Nicely
As children, we all learned that if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. Which is fine when Great Aunt Gertrude gives you a puce, hand-knitted sweater.
But staying silent doesn’t apply to your bedroom partner; so you’ll need to find a way to speak your mind when it comes to sex — tactfully.
“I really don't like when people say to their partner, ‘Oh, you couldn't make me come.’ Well, first of all, you're responsible for your own orgasm,” says Blaylock-Solar. “But also, it makes it sound like it's a character flaw in your partner that you're not getting what you need, when you may just have to have a conversation about it.”

Rather than focusing on what they are doing that you don’t like, “Respond to touch that you like positively,” advises LaBonde. “You can also suggest your partner try a new thing — ‘My friend told me about …’ is always a good way in.” Do this from a positive place. “Treat it as something new to try, rather than something they are doing wrong to fix.”
4. Tell — and Show
Even if you wish they could, your partner can’t read your mind. That goes for every aspect of your relationship, especially sex. This goes back to reaffirming the positive. “You can say something like, ‘I really love it when you touch me here, and, I'd love more of that,’” suggests Bulow. You can also show your partner how you like to be touched using your own hands.
Of course, some people can be more sensitive to this than others. “Sometimes people do say things in a really nice way and their partner still feels like their sexual ego gets hurt,” says Bulow.
In that case, you may need to have a more extensive conversation — about how you two can talk about sex. "I think it's reasonable to say, 'We need to talk about how to best have those conversations, because my goal is not to criticize or to hurt you, or to offend you. And I also don't want to feel like I can't tell you how I feel. So how can we do this better?'" says Bulow. This often helps your partner realize this isn't about them doing something wrong.
5. Check in With Your Partner
When you and your partner are both sexually satisfied, it’s bound to help you feel more connected. So once you’ve figured out what you like and how to express this to your partner, make sure they are feeling fulfilled too. All you have to do is ask. “Check in after sex. Be open and nonjudgmental to their desires and interests,” suggests LaBonde. “Speak up for your desires and wants, and advocate for yourself. Encourage your partner to do the same.”
Of course, it may not be easy to hear if your partner feels like something is lacking. “Try to receive what your partner is saying, understanding that it's not necessarily criticism of you as a person but an opportunity for them to express what it is that they're wanting and needing from their sexual experiences,” says Blaylock-Solar.
While some sexual requests may be a hard "no" for one of you, others might be more along the lines of, "I could try it; I can't promise, but I am open to trying." And you two may choose to incorporate something in your sex life even if it isn't one person's favorite, such as something that may seem boring or perhaps too kinky for one partner but feels exciting for the other. "No one should feel pathologized or put down for what they like or what they find sexually fulfilling," says Bulow. "It's important for everyone to feel like their fantasies, their erotic scripts, their thoughts, and their needs are heard and incorporated into their sex life."
6. Let Go of the Fantasy of Spontaneous Sex
To try out your new moves, you’re going to need some time for sex. And while many people think sex can be spontaneous, like in romance novels and erotica, it rarely is. When you’re dating, you’re taking extra care with your appearance, washing your bed sheets, and following other steps in anticipation of sex, Bulow says. That’s far from spontaneous.
One issue may be the way we view sex: In a study published in February 2023 in The Journal of Sex Research, when people assumed that sex has to be spontaneous to be enjoyable, they felt less sexually satisfied with planned sex. But when people believed that planned sex was satisfying, they enjoyed having planned sex just as much as spontaneous sex.
“A sex researcher named Jack Morin stated, 'Routine is the secret, it's not the culprit,’” says Bulow. While it may not sound sexy, carving out a certain night of the week — or whatever frequency and time you and your partner want — can actually help your sex life. A regular date or sex night can help relieve the pressure of figuring out when you’ll have sex in your busy week.
Within that time, you can be spontaneous, like lighting candles in the room, trying out a new massage oil, or anything that might be a turn on for you or your partner. “When we plan for something and think about the details of it, it makes it special,” Bulow adds.
7. It’s Okay if It’s Awkward to Talk About Sex
Some of us are more comfortable talking about sex than others. If having these conversations makes you blush, that’s okay. They are still worth having. “Embrace the awkwardness and know that everyone struggles to talk about these things,” says LaBonde. “Give each other space and grace to miscommunicate and to work through it. It gets easier the more you do it.”

1. Postorgasmic Illness Syndrome: When the ‘Big O’ Makes You Sick
Have you ever experienced flu-like symptoms like fever, foggy head, painful muscles or joints, fatigue, or problems concentrating right after having sex? You could have postorgasmic illness syndrome (POIS), a condition first identified in 2002 that tends to affect men shortly after ejaculation (it also, rarely, may occur in females).
According to a study, there are indications that POIS is triggered in a man by an autoimmune reaction to his own seminal fluid (in women, it’s associated with tissue around the vagina). If you think POIS could be putting a damper on your sex life, it’s time to talk to a urologist or gynecologist.
2. Exertional Headaches and Orgasmic Headaches

In the first type, sexual excitement causes muscle contraction in the head and neck, leading to head pain. Headaches associated with strenuous physical activity, like weight lifting or sexual intercourse, are also known as exertional headaches, according to the NHF. Most exertional headaches are benign, and they are most commonly associated with patients who are prone to migraines, but in some cases they can be a sign of abnormalities in the brain or other diseases. If you think you’ve experienced an exertional headache, see your doctor.
The second type of sex-induced headache has been dubbed an “orgasmic headache.” An orgasmic headache is a very intense, severe vascular headache usually occurring just before orgasm, according to the NHF. The headache can be a response to an increase in blood pressure, and it usually lasts a few minutes (but can last for hours). It occurs more frequently in men than in women and usually strikes those prone to migraines.
3. Postcoital Dysphoria: When Sex Makes You Feel Sad
Feeling glum about a not-so-great sexual encounter is one thing — but in a survey study, one-third of women said they’ve felt depressed even after a perfectly pleasing lovemaking session. Researchers call it postcoital dysphoria, and it affects about 10 percent of women regularly.
Postsex depression is marked by feelings of sadness, anxiety, irritability, or agitation. If you’re regularly sad in the sack, you might want to explore the reasons for your feelings with a therapist, says the obstetrician-gynecologist Paula Bednarek, MD, MPH, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. These emotions could also be related to feeling unequal in your partnership or other relationship issues.
4. Semen Allergies: When You’re Allergic to Sex
Can you be physically allergic to sex? Up to 40,000 women in the United States are believed to have a semen allergy, according to one study. Although this sexual sensitivity is rare, Dr. Bednarek says that semen changes the pH balance in the vagina for some women, resulting in irritation, cervical mucus, hives, and swelling. Your best bet for reducing the symptoms of semen allergy is to use a condom, says Bednarek.
5. TGA: Sex That Actually Blows Your Mind
Have you ever had sex that’s so toe-curlingly fabulous, you can’t think straight? For one woman in Washington, DC, sex with her husband zapped her memory ... literally.
Her memories began to disappear about an hour after intercourse, and doctors diagnosed her with transient global amnesia (TGA) — a sudden, temporary episode of memory loss that affects between 23 and 32 people 50 and older out of 100,000 each year in the United States, according to one article.
When the incident was reported, doctors were a little stumped. That’s because researchers aren’t exactly sure what causes TGA. One study found that patients with TGA tend to have insufficiency of the valves in the jugular vein, which carries deoxygenated blood from the brain to the heart.
Sex isn’t the only trigger — transient global amnesia may also be caused by other physically strenuous activities or high-stress events. Fortunately, people who experience this curious condition usually get their memory back within a few hours, and it’s unlikely to happen again.

If you’ve ever had a urinary tract infection, you know the symptoms well. There’s the pain when you urinate, the need to go often, and the maddening feeling that you can’t completely empty your bladder.
And some unfortunate females seem to be extra susceptible to getting UTIs, says Bednarek (adult women are 30 times more likely than men to get the infection, found a study).

The Rafah crossing point between Egypt and Gaza has finally opened to allow in a trickle of aid for the first time in two weeks, after intense negotiations involving the US, Israel, Egypt and the UN.
The shipment of 20 trucks bringing medical supplies, however, offered very limited relief to Gaza’s 2.3 million population, under fire and with barely anything to eat or drink.
Under the US-brokered agreement, only 20 trucks are being allowed in on Saturday, deliveries from the Egyptian Red Crescent to the Palestinian Red Crescent organisation. Aid officials said they were not expecting a delivery on Sunday, with the next consignment due to be a UN convoy on Monday.
The Israeli government has demanded to see proof that the aid deliveries are not seized or diverted by Hamas, before authorising further deliveries. A UN official said on Saturday that “verification procedures are still under discussion”.
Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, said: “We have been clear: Hamas must not interfere with the provision of this life-saving assistance.” If that happened, he added, then “as a practical matter it will hinder the international community from being able to provide this aid”.
Aid agencies are also negotiating with Israel to allow fuel, essential for hospital generators and Gaza’s water desalination and pumping system, to be part of the humanitarian convoys.
The UN secretary general, António Guterres, told the peace summit in Cairo: “The people of Gaza need a commitment for much, much more – a continuous delivery of aid to Gaza at the scale that is needed.” He called for a humanitarian ceasefire to rescue Gaza from what he described as a “godawful nightmare”.
On Friday, Guterres visited the Rafah crossing where substantial quantities of humanitarian aid were waiting for the green light to cross into Gaza.

“There I saw a paradox – a humanitarian catastrophe playing out in real time,” he said. “On the one hand, I saw hundreds of trucks teeming with food and other essential supplies. At the summit, the Palestinian Authority president, Mahmoud Abbas, reduced to a bystander in the Israel-Hamas conflict, said Palestinians were being forcibly displaced in both Gaza and the West Bank, where harassment from settlers with security force support is forcing increasing numbers of people off their ancestral land.
“We will never leave our land and we’ll stand tall on our land until the end,” Abbas declared.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, said on social media that the medical supplies being sent into Gaza “include trauma and chronic disease medicines, and basic essential medicines”.
He called for the protection of humanitarian teams in Gaza and “sustained humanitarian access”.
Twenty lorryloads of supplies is a tiny proportion of the humanitarian aid that used to cross the Rafah border before the current conflict erupted with a Hamas massacre of Israeli civilians on 7 October. The daily average used to be about 500 trucks a day, aid officials said.
Martin Griffiths, the UN’s head of humanitarian affairs and emergency relief, said: “I am confident that this delivery will be the start of a sustainable effort to provide essential supplies – including food, water, medicine and fuel – to the people of Gaza, in a safe, dependable, unconditional and unimpeded manner.
“Two weeks since the start of hostilities, the humanitarian situation in Gaza – already precarious – has reached catastrophic levels. It is critical that aid reaches people in need wherever they are across Gaza, and at the right scale.”
The planned convoys, under the current agreement with Israel, will not include fuel, which is critical for hospital generators and operating water pumps and desalination plants at a time when the water ration at UN shelters is down to one litre a person a day for all purposes, well below international standards for minimal consumption.
Egyptian and US officials first believed a week ago they had a deal with the Israeli government to open Rafah, but Israel insisted on guarantees that the aid consignments would be thoroughly checked to ensure they consisted only of food, water and medical supplies, and that arrangements would be in place inside Gaza for the aid to be distributed without Hamas involvement.
Joe Biden sealed the agreement during his visit to Tel Aviv on Wednesday but it took another three days for the crossing to open, while Egyptian workers repaired bomb damage to the crossing from the Sinai peninsula into Gaza.
Part of the agreement was for hundreds of Palestinian Americans inside Gaza to be able to leave, but there was no sign by Saturday afternoon that any had been able to cross.
“There is no higher priority than the safety of US citizens abroad, and US embassy Cairo teams are poised to assist these US citizens,” Blinken said.
“We are working tirelessly, including with partner and allied nations with citizens in Gaza, to secure their ability to safely depart the conflict area.”
The ActionAid communications and advocacy coordinator, Riham Jafari, said: “We welcome this morning’s aid convoy into Gaza, but it’s clear that what’s being delivered today is barely a drop in the ocean. Before this crisis began, around 500 aid trucks would normally cross the border every day providing a vital lifeline to millions of Gazans who were already facing a humanitarian crisis.
“Aid trucks also did not bring with them the fuel needed to power hospitals, keep ambulances moving, or to pump water from the ground. We’re hearing stories every day of communities coming together to donate whatever fuel they have remaining to keep incubators going for newborns who are in a critical condition. With 2.2 million Gazans facing a humanitarian crisis, we’re urgently calling for a ceasefire and for the opening of humanitarian corridors.”

Thus, I have prepared a number of varied day trip itineraries that are easily doable from Bodrum as a base.
Check out these five-day trip adventures to take from Bodrum:
Bodrum to Datça
A 105-minute boat trip away from Bodrum’s center will take you to Datça, an extremely pleasant town and lesser-developed region that lies at the tip of the Datça peninsula. While Datça is also reachable by road, at a nearly 3.5-hour drive, for a day trip it makes much more sense to take the ferryboat across. Admittedly, the ferry boat fee is surprisingly costly, and even more so if you board with a car, TL 385 ($15) per person, TL 1,300 ($48) per car, it can be well worth it to discover the quaint town, spectacular beaches and stunning ancient ruins of Knidos. The ferryboat docks in Karaköy, which is less than 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the main port area of town with old Datça, an area of preserved stone houses, cobbled streets and boutique cafes and shops along the way.
The earliest ferry sets sail at 9 a.m. from Bodrum with the latest return being at 6 p.m., which allows for ample time to discover the region. While having a car will make getting around to all of the different destinations possible in Datça, the town’s minibus service also runs to everywhere you most likely would want to go, with the center of Datça being the base point for each different route. While the town is certainly cute and is set along the circumference of the seashore, swimming in any of the many “bükü(s),” from Ovabükü and Hayitbükü to Palamutbükü, will be your best bet for a beautiful and serene swimming experience coupled by a rustic and authentic seafood lunch. These special swimming spots, which are truly the essence of Datça, lie on the route to the ancient site of Knidos, which all told is an approximate hour's drive from town, making the two activities the perfect combo for a day trip getaway, especially as Knidos will be hot at this time of the year.
To Bafa, Didim
At a distance of 80 kilometers from the center of Bodrum, Bafa Lake is a spectacular and ancient site with unique rock formations, flora and fauna that feels like a world away. With a history spanning back 8,000 years, Kapıkırı is the main town from which to explore the region, which is also an opportune spot for bouldering its otherworldly granite and gneiss boulders equipped with cave drawings. A truly special spot for photographers and birdwatchers alike, in addition to the ancient sites of Herakleia and Latmos, nearby is the Seven Monastery (Yediler Manastırı) all of which warrant a visit.
While there certainly is enough to see to while away the day in the Bafa and Mount Latmos region, adventurous souls may want to head out to Didim’s ancient Miletus ancient theater or head straight to the beach of Altinkum at Didim and then stop at the Temple of Apollon before heading the extra hour drive back to Bodrum.

To Mazı, Akbük
A wonderful yet windy drive from Bodrum along the town’s southern coast will take you through Mumcular first and then on to Mazı and Çökertme and once you pass Ören, you end up in the beautiful bay of Akbük. If you time the trip on a Friday, then you can also visit the very traditional farmers markets that are held in Mumcular and Mazı. Not only will the produce most likely be less expensive but there are also a variety of different regional specialties and textiles that tend to be on offer. You will need a car for this excursion, but driving the coastal road is a trip in itself and offers the opportunity to stop in Mazı or Çökertme for a traditional fish lunch.
The final destination of Akbuk, which makes the entire distance nearly 90 kilometers from the center of Bodrum, also has a number of varied beach clubs with restaurants where you can lay out and enjoy this quiet and pristine cove.

To Uyku Vadisi, Iassos
Located in the Gökçeler Canyon, Uyku Vadisi (Sleep Valley) has dozens of caves and waterfalls as well as cafes and restaurants set in what feels like the heart of a forest. A welcome respite from the sweltering summer heat in Bodrum, this precious slice of nature is less than 45 kilometers away from the town center. For a super special treat, tack on a visit to İncirliin Mağarası, the only show cave in the region that is just four kilometers away. From there, a 30-minute drive brings you to Iassos, aka Kıyıkışlacık, which is a small seaside town, with a handful of restaurants that houses the ancient site of Lassos, a Carian city that dates back 5,000 years. As part of the archaeological site, you can also visit the open-air Lassos Fish Bazaar Museum. The site offers spectacular views of the sunset and you can cap off the day with a seafood dinner at any of the nearby restaurants.
To Greek Islands
Taking a day trip to a Greek island is surprisingly easy when based in Bodrum as well as in a number of other Turkish port towns such as Ayvalık, Çeşme, Marmaris and Fethiye. Bodrum, however, just so happens to have the most options of islands to visit and the quickest traveling time.
A boat from the town of Bodrum proper will get you to Kos in just 20 minutes with one of the express ferries that take off as early as 8:30 a.m. and have a return boat trip from Kos to Bodrum setting sail at 6 p.m. The Bodrum peninsula also has a second port in Turgutreis that has ferries servicing the Dodecanese islands of Kalymnos (a 45-minute journey) and Leros (a one-hour trip), making for a total of three different Greek isles that can be visited for the day. Keep in mind, however, that while ferries generally run between Bodrum and Kos year-round, the ferry services to Leros and Kalymnos will come to a halt toward the end of September. The cost of visiting Kos is also significantly less with tickets costing approximately 25 euros ($27) round trip, whereas boat trips to Kalymnos and Leros can be upwards of 75 euros both ways.

1. Penis Fracture
Can men “break” their penises even though there are no bones in the penis? Absolutely. A penial fracture occurs when the erect penis is suddenly bent, causing a tear in the tunica albuginea membrane. This membrane surrounds the core of the penis — the area responsible for erection — and if it tears, blood leaks out to the surrounding tissue. Men who experience a penial fracture will hear a cracking sound followed by severe pain, swelling, and dark bruising of the penis.
This injury usually occurs among men who are participating in vigorous sex and in some cases, aggressive masturbation. 3. Urinary Tract Infections
Sex is a common cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women. During sex, bacteria from the genital area and anus can enter a woman’s urethra, bladder, or kidneys causing UTI symptoms like frequent and painful urination, low back pain, and abdominal pain. 5. Heart Attack
Vigorous sexual activity nearly triples a person’s heart attack risk in the hours immediately afterward, especially if the person isn’t very active, according to a 2011 analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Italy aims to curb rising fatal traffic accidents by offering free taxi rides in front of clubs and similar venues to prevent drunk driving.
The trial project, launched last weekend outside discos and clubs in six Italian cities, offers free taxi rides to party-goers as a measure to prevent them from driving under the influence of alcohol.
The initiative is being implemented across a few regions, from southern Puglia to northern Veneto, and is slated to continue until mid-September.
The project is based on asking individuals, who seem particularly inebriated when they exit clubs, to undergo an alcohol test. If the test shows that their alcohol levels exceed the legal limit, a taxi or a shuttle will be called to provide them with a safe ride home.
The scheme has been pushed by the right-wing League leader and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who is Italy's transport minister and has been active in campaigns to prevent drunk driving and ensure security on Italian streets.
The initiative, however, has been widely criticized by the left-wing opposition and associations representing the victims of car accidents.
Critics have suggested that the scheme risks rewarding excessive alcohol consumption among youths, while some citizens complained that their taxes would contribute to funding this kind of transport.
The proposal was supported by several night entertainment venue associations across Italy.
On X, formerly Twitter, Salvini defended the initiative, saying that "to stop the slaughter, we need to involve everyone in terms of prevention."

Italy aims to curb rising fatal traffic accidents by offering free taxi rides in front of clubs and similar venues to prevent drunk driving.
The trial project, launched last weekend outside discos and clubs in six Italian cities, offers free taxi rides to party-goers as a measure to prevent them from driving under the influence of alcohol.
The initiative is being implemented across a few regions, from southern Puglia to northern Veneto, and is slated to continue until mid-September.
The project is based on asking individuals, who seem particularly inebriated when they exit clubs, to undergo an alcohol test. If the test shows that their alcohol levels exceed the legal limit, a taxi or a shuttle will be called to provide them with a safe ride home.
The scheme has been pushed by the right-wing League leader and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who is Italy's transport minister and has been active in campaigns to prevent drunk driving and ensure security on Italian streets.
The initiative, however, has been widely criticized by the left-wing opposition and associations representing the victims of car accidents.
Critics have suggested that the scheme risks rewarding excessive alcohol consumption among youths, while some citizens complained that their taxes would contribute to funding this kind of transport.
The proposal was supported by several night entertainment venue associations across Italy.
On X, formerly Twitter, Salvini defended the initiative, saying that "to stop the slaughter, we need to involve everyone in terms of prevention."
According to data from Italy's Carabinieri police published by the European Transport Safety Council, in 2019 around 8.7% of the 58,872 road collisions with injuries reported in Italy involved at least one driver under the influence of alcohol.
Manchester City weaker so the Premier League title might be bound for Arsenal
What do Arsenal need to win the Premier League?
For the first time since the summer of 2007, I genuinely believe Arsenal can win the Premier League this season. I’m not saying we “will” win the league, just that we can. So, how do we do it?
89, 93, 86, 99 & 98 are the points total of the champions over the past five seasons. That’s an average of 93 points. A figure that has been a maximum for the past three seasons. Let’s work on the basis that 94 points will secure the Premier League. So, where do Arsenal get those points from?
Luton Town and Sheffield Utd is a “must obtain” 12 points.
Then you have the following “relegation threatened” teams: Burnley, Everton, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Wolves. That’s 10 fixtures and 30 points available. Arsenal really need to flat track bully their way towards another 30 points. But this is football, so let’s allow for a rogue draw somewhere along the line, so 28 points. We’re now on 40 points.
Looking towards the “middling teams” who will be hoping to look upwards rather than downwards and you have West Ham, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Brentford, Aston Villa and Brighton. These 12 fixtures offer an opportunity for a further 36 points but there is definitely a step up in quality here compared to the last group of opponents listed. 6 home wins, 3 away wins and 3 away draws (let’s say Aston Villa, Brighton and one other) would give us a further 30 points. We’re now on 70 points.
Ok, so 24 points still required and six teams left to play.

Winners: Arsenal – They’ve kept the fundamentals and added wisely, should be ready to push on with last year’s experience.
2nd, 3rd, 4th: United, City, Liverpool – United are in a similar boat to Arsenal, and now have a goal scorer, but may not be the finished article ready for a title push. City have lost a few match winners, and so far look weaker than last season, plus their motivation could potentially be diminished. Liverpool should bounce back but they still appear dodgy at the back, but more than enough to get them in the top four.
5th, 6th, 7th, 8th: Chelsea, Newcastle, Spurs, Villa – No European football should bode Chelsea well, but Poch has a massive job turning those players into a team. Champions League football, teams knowing how they play combined with some moderate upgrades makes for a challenging season. Spurs should improve, but this guess is based on Harry staying. Villa in theory should be capable of achieving better than last year, but like Newcastle, teams will know what to expect this year. Realistically, all of these teams are interchangeable/reversible.
18th, 19th, 20th: After today’s news and this summer’s transfers, I cannot see Wolves surviving. Could O’Neil do it again? Does lightning strike twice? Sheffield United don’t look strong, and have recruited poorly. Luton are here just for the ride it appears.
Relegation survivors: Forest, Bournemouth, Everton
Mid-table/pushing for Europe: Brighton, West Ham, Fulham, Brentford, Palace, Burnley
Best Signing: Mac Allister. All he needs to do is replicate last year’s form and get Liverpool back into the top four for this to be a roaring success. Equals as a bargain if so.
Worst Signing: Havertz. Won’t be the CM they need, won’t be the backup striker they need, won’t be the CAM they need. He could be the 2023 version of Veron to Chelsea.
Top scorer: Haaland.
PFA player of the year: Odegaard
First (Second?) manager to be sacked: Paul Heckingbottom
Champions League winner: Bayern with Kane, Real with Mbappe, or City.
Most Excited about: Seeing United with an actual striker playing good quality football again.
Title: Not City. They’re weaker than last season, at 32 and picking up more injuries, I think De Bruyne’s best seasons are behind him and I think they’ll lack that extra few % in terms of hunger after 3 in a row and the treble. Will still be the best team on their day, but can see them doing daft, complacent things like losing to Everton and/or Palace. Right now, I’d say Arsenal, but could be United, Liverpool or going rogue, Chelsea (would need an alignment of stars, but playing once a week can be huge like they did for the title under Conte).
Top 8: Arsenal, City, United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, Villa, Newcastle
Relegated: Luton, Wolves, Sheff United. Luton and Wolves bottom two and adrift. Don’t think it’ll be as tight as recent seasons.

Best Signing: I think Mount will do really well, Mac Allister looks annoyingly decent value, Pau Torres could do very well. Rice might be the difference for Arsenal. Nkunku looks tasty but now sadly injured. Barnes & Maddison went for good value fees.
Flop: Havertz is the obvious shout, and I have a bad feeling that Onana is going to drop a couple of bollocks early doors, but Sandro Tonali screams flop to me. Milan fan, Milan tattoo, cried when they told him they were selling him, and he’s traded Milan for Bigg Market.
First manager gone: I’d said Lopetegui, but as he’s already gone, I might double down on Wolves and say O’Neil. They look a right old state and I’d very surprised if he makes Xmas. Don’t think there’ll be anywhere near as much managerial turnover as last season.
Hopes for my team this season: the Qataris get tired of waiting and f**k off. On the pitch, 80 points, QF of the CL and if I’m being greedy, a cup.
Anything else: Newcastle to suffer from having CL football for the first time in ages. Think they’ll do okay in Europe, but will affect their league form. Villa to carry on getting better under Emery and Spurs to get better as the season wears on. If they start playing football, after Conte & Jose, they could well be entertaining in a 4-3 either way style. Brighton to disappoint and be midtable. Maguire to score against United at the London Stadium. Was worried about a resurgent Liverpool, but I think that Saudi double deal for Henderson & Fabinho might have screwed them.
Or Liverpool?

So I may be in the minority here but I don’t think Wolves are going to have as bad a season as everyone thinks….
Lopetegui made it clear he didn’t want to be at the club so yes get rid of him. Lemina, Gomes and Cunha all looked sharp against Rennes. Neves was obviously too good for Wolves but they genuinely look a better team without him. I don’t see them being one of the teams getting relegated.
I’m a Huddersfield fan but I also predict that they’ll surprise everyone and do well too
