Some of the first humans in the Americas came from China, study finds

Some of the first humans to arrive in the Americas included people from what is now China, who arrived in two distinct migrations during and after the last ice age, a new genetics study has found.

“Our findings indicate that besides the previously indicated ancestral sources of Native Americans in Siberia, the northern coastal China also served as a genetic reservoir contributing to the gene pool,” said Yu-Chun Li, one of the report authors.

Li added that during the second migration, the same lineage of people settled in Japan, which could help explain similarities in prehistoric arrowheads and spears found in the Americas, China and Japan.

It was once believed that ancient Siberians, who crossed over a land bridge that existed in the Bering Strait linking modern Russia and Alaska, were the sole ancestors of Native Americans.

More recent research, from the late 2000s onwards, has signaled that more diverse sources from Asia could be connected to an ancient lineage responsible for founding populations across the Americas, including in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico and California.

Known as D4h, this lineage is found in mitochondrial DNA, which is inherited only from mothers and is used to trace maternal ancestry.

The team from the Kunming Institute of Zoology embarked on a 10-year hunt for D4h, combing through 100,000 modern and 15,000 ancient DNA samples across Eurasia, eventually landing on 216 contemporary and 39 ancient individuals who came from the ancient lineage.

http://blog.ub.ac.id/faridmuzayyani/2023/05/10/some-of-the-first-humans-in-the-americas-came-from-china-study-finds/

By analyzing the mutations that had accrued over time, looking at the samples’ geographic locations and using carbon dating, they were able to reconstruct the D4h’s origins and expansion history.

The results revealed two migration events. The first was between 19,500 and 26,000 years ago during the Last Glacial Maximum, when ice sheet coverage was at its greatest and climate conditions in northern China were probably inhospitable.

The second occurred during the melting period, between 19,000 and 11,500 years ago. Increasing human populations during this period might have triggered migrations.

It was during this second migration that the scientists found a surprising genetic link between Native Americans and Japanese people, particularly the indigenous Ainu.

In the melting period, a subgroup branched out from northern coastal China to Japan, contributing to the Japanese people, the study said, a finding that chimes with archeological similarities between ancient people in the Americas, China and Japan.

Li said a strength of the study was the number of samples they discovered, and complementary evidence from Y chromosomal DNA showing that male ancestors of Native Americans lived in northern China at the same time as female ancestors made researchers confident of their findings.

“However, we don’t know in which specific place in northern coastal China this expansion occurred and what specific events promoted these migrations,” he said.

“More evidence, especially ancient genomes, are needed to answer these questions.”

The free press is under attack from multiple forces. Media outlets are closing their doors, victims to a broken business model. In much of the world, journalism is morphing into propaganda, as governments dictate what can and can’t be printed. In the last year alone, hundreds of reporters have been killed or imprisoned for doing their jobs. The UN reports that 85% of the world’s population experienced a decline in press freedom in their country in recent years.

https://ibusinessday.com/some-of-the-first-humans-in-the-americas-came-from-china-study-finds/

Last week marked the 30th annual World Press Freedom Day, a day for everyone to reflect on the importance of free expression as fundamental for all other rights. It is also an opportunity to pledge support for independent media – because without a robust and free press, a healthy democracy is impossible.

As you’re joining us today from Indonesia, we hope you will consider marking this day by supporting the Guardian. Despite the financial challenges plaguing the media industry, we’ve decided to keep our journalism paywall-free, because we deeply believe everyone has the right to access high-quality, fact-checked reporting. And we maintain our independence thanks to generosity from readers all over the world, who understand that supporting the free press is an investment in an informed and empowered public.

Unlike many others, we have no billionaire owner – this helps us maintain the freedom to fearlessly chase the truth and report it with integrity. Your support will allow us to continue to work with trademark determination and passion to bring you journalism that’s always free from commercial or political interference.

We also encourage you to support one of the many, smaller independent news organisations around the world. Over the years, we’ve collaborated with teams who are often publishing quality reporting in the face of great adversity. We have shared our expertise with them, helping to start and grow their own reader funding models. If this interests you, find out more about our work with outlets in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Turkey, Hungary and beyond.

Today we ask you to power Guardian reporting for the years to come, whether with a small sum or a larger one

The Istanbul Coffee Fair's fifth edition began Thursday, attracting coffee lovers and professionals from the industry to the Haliç Congress Center in the bustling city of Istanbul. Attendees had the opportunity to sample a diverse range of coffees from various roasters.

The fair, with the participation of nearly 80 brands from the coffee industry, is being held in a large 2,500-square-meter area.

Fair Coordinator Reha Kadak told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they brought together important national and international brands of the industry at the fair.

Noting that nearly 20,000 participants come to the fair every year, Kadak said: "We are not just a festival that interests end-users. We mostly host companies that aim to develop business partnerships."

Gastronomy students, coffee enthusiasts and young people also show great interest in the event.

At the same time, workshops and conferences are being held with reputable people in the sector for four days, he said.

Every day during the fair, workshops on coffee roasting, porcelain, chocolate and painting are organized.

17:50 Met police investigate more organ trafficking cases in UK
Met police investigate more organ trafficking cases in UK

The Metropolitan police is investigating more cases of organ trafficking in the UK after new victims came forward following the first conviction for the offence under modern slavery laws.

Detectives from Scotland Yard’s modern slavery and child exploitation team have said they are investigating more allegations of people being trafficked for their body parts to London and other areas of the UK.

They also confirmed that Operation Manoa, the investigation that led to the conviction at the Old Bailey of three kidney traffickers, including a senior Nigerian politician, Ike Ekweremadu, “continues to be ongoing”.

Det Supt Andy Furphy, who leads the modern slavery team for the Met, paid tribute to the bravery of the victim in the case, a 21-year-old street trader from Lagos who was trafficked to London as a potential kidney donor for Ekweremadu’s sick daughter, Sonia.

The man, who cannot be named because the identity of victims of modern slavery are protected, was falsely presented as a willing donor to a private renal unit at London’s Royal free hospital with forged documents falsely claiming he was Sonia’s cousin. When the proposed transplant was rejected, the victim fled to the police in fear for his life because he believed he was being lined up for another transplant in Nigeria.

Speaking at a media briefing, Furphy said he could not disclose details of ongoing investigations or the numbers involved, but said the cases were “not just in London – it’s farther afield as well”.

He added: “It’s difficult to say how serious it is in the country right now. We often find as soon as something gets highlighted in the public sphere … others victims come forward. This is now not the only investigation we’ve got into organ harvesting.”

Furphy cited World Health Organization estimates that suggest up to 10% of organ transplants globally are done on the black market. “In the UK we don’t see that – it is still a tiny percentage. I don’t think the true extent of it is truly known both at home and abroad. We’re looking to build those intelligence gaps,” he said.

The kidney harvesting case highlighted vulnerabilities in the UK’s vetting system for living transplant. Mr Justice Jeremy Johnson, in his sentencing remarks, echoed the prosecution’s suggestion that “a lesson to be learned from this case is that clinicians must be alive to the risk of trafficking and report cases like this when concerns arise”. The judge said he entirely agreed.

As a result of the case, the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) which regulates transplants has reviewed hundreds of similar operations since 2017.

In a statement it said: “When the HTA learned of this case, we immediately took steps to review all cases with potentially similar features, with a focus on those cases with overseas donors and cases in the private sector. This review looked at just over 600 cases.”

The Old Bailey heard that Chris Agbo, 50, an NHS consultant nephrologist at Hinchingbrooke hospital in Cambridgeshire who runs Vintage Health, a medical tourism company, was paid by the Ekweremadus to help facilitate the proposed kidney transplant. He also helped arrange an earlier successful kidney transplant at the Royal Free involving another man suspected of being trafficked from Nigeria, the jury was told.

The Old Bailey heard that Agbo examined the abdomen of the victim trafficked by the Ekweremadus who then feared he was being lined up for another transplant in Nigeria.

North West Anglia NHS trust confirmed that Agbo is employed at Hinchingbrooke hospital. It added: “We are unable to comment further whilst investigations are ongoing.”

Agbo, president of the Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain, has been approached for comment.

Detectives investigating the organ trafficking plot said the HTA and clinicians involved in transplants should do more to ensure the police are alerted when there are concerns about organ trafficking.

Furphy said: “We have since done some significant training with the Royal Free hospital. We are in wider discussions with the NHS as well.”

DI Andy Owen, who was also involved in the investigation, said: “There’s definitely some sort of learning to come out of the hospitals and that’s something that we’re engaged in as a separate matter. They [the Royal Free] did raise safeguarding concerns and we’re doing a separate piece of work to up-skill them around modern slavery and the action they should be taking.”

He added: “The main piece of our work is with the Human Tissue Authority to ensure that they have processes in place to be alerting us as the police [when there are concerns about trafficking].”

In a statement the HTA said it will continue to ensure that living organ donations are made with consent, free of any duress, coercion or reward. It said: “Our guidance for transplant teams and independent assessors includes when and how to raise safeguarding concerns. We continue to focus on identifying and addressing any areas we might further tighten and refine.

“We have also increased the scrutiny we give to cases that involve overseas donors and cases taking place in the private sector.

A spokesperson for the Royal Free said: “We continue to work closely with the Met to ensure all those working in our transplant services are aware of the law around organ trafficking and know what to do if they suspect a crime has been committed.

“In addition, the trust has worked with the Met and the HTA to develop a training package that can be used by other trusts to increase awareness and understanding of organ trafficking among healthcare staff.”

Forgotten crafts: CERN scientist revives iconic reed roofs, houses

Tried and tested through centuries, reeds were the go-to for houses and their roofs in history. Once upon a time, that was the case for the many homes in the picturesque Burgenland region of eastern Austria as well, as most of them were thatched. However, now Jacobus van Hoorne's house is the only one in the entire neighborhood with a reed roof.

And to get it approved he had to do battle for two years with the local authorities, culminating in having to set fire to a model thatched house to prove that his home wouldn't be a fire hazard.

"You are practically not allowed to have reed roofs in Austria," said Van Hoorne. "You have to find a way around it, which took a long time."

Buoyed up by his legal victory, the CERN particle physicist turned thatcher hopes to revive the ancient art as a part of more sustainable house building – particularly as his reeds come from the region's UNESCO-listed salt-water lake.

"It's not just a natural raw material, but it also has great insulating properties," he told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

"A roof like that... is only made of reed and (steel) wire. It's completely untreated. You can just compost it and recycle the wire.

"The nature, the material, the craft. It's just beautiful," he added.

A reed roof lasts about 40 years, said the Dutch-born scientist, and unlike conventional materials whose manufacture requires lots of carbon to be burned, reeds actually help store it.

Carbon captors
Like straw and earth they have an almost negligible carbon footprint, said Azra Korjenic, the head of the Department of Ecological Building Technologies at the Vienna University of Technology.

In fact, marshlands and moors where reeds grow are some of the planet's main carbon sinks, surpassing even forests and grasslands, according to the 2015 Soil Atlas.

Yet one of the biggest stumbling blocks to sustainability is the construction industry, which favors prefab building modules over ecological materials, Korjenic added.

Current regulations and norms are also hampering the inclusion of natural building materials.

As Austria's only master thatchers, Van Hoorne and his father are in high demand, and they also farm their own reeds locally.

But even that is not easy because of low prices and droughts which stunt the reeds' growth as the climate warms, he said.

He and four other remaining reed farmers in Austria also face crushing competition from China, which has an 80% share of the European market.

With his customers for now mostly in England and the Netherlands, "shipping a container from Shanghai to Rotterdam costs around $2,000 – just as much as a truck from Austria," he said.

18:48 What Is Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR)?
What Is Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR)?

ASMR stands for “autonomous sensory meridian response.” It’s a rather dry term considering the fact that it stands for a physical sensation that millions of people describe as a peaceful, joyful tingling that floods their bodies. The term was coined by a layperson and was popularized via digital media platforms. As such, it is not currently a formal medical diagnosis or widely acknowledged by the medical community, though it may be considered an emerging area of research.

These sensations can come over people when they watch certain videos or hear certain sounds. (1) ASMR can also occur in the real world in response to directly experienced sounds and sensations, such as someone gently massaging another person’s scalp.

The internet is now bursting with sites offering ASMR videos. One famous creator of these videos, known only as Maria, describes ASMR as being “like showers of sparkles. It’s like warm sand being poured all over you,” she says. “It’s like goosebumps on your brain.”

People who experience ASMR — and not all do — speak of it as a tingling that often starts in the scalp and then travels along the spine, at times reaching the limbs. Those who experience ASMR generally describe it as both pleasurable and relaxing.

Other, less frequently used terms for ASMR include AIE, for attention-induced euphoria, and AIHO, for attention-induced head orgasm. Despite this latter term, the vast majority of people who use ASMR videos state that they find them relaxing but not erotic.

What Are Some Popular ASMR Triggers?
ASMR sensations can arise in response to actual sights, sounds, or physical sensations that a person experiences directly. ASMR can also arise when people watch videos that present similar sights or sounds. Whether a person experiences the sights, sounds, or sensations in the real world or by means of videos, the ASMR stimuli are called triggers.

Popular ASMR triggers include the following:

Whispers or other slow, gentle patterns of speech, the sounds of kissing, or lips smacking.
Pleasing, nonhuman sounds, like a fire crackling, rushing or running water, the crinkling of paper, and white noise.
Being the recipient of close personal care from another person or witnessing such an encounter. Some examples include being given a massage, having your hair done or just fondled by someone else, having makeup applied, and being the “patient” in situations such as a low-stress, simulated medical or optical exam.
Observing another person working on a quiet, detailed task, such as painting a picture, fixing a bicycle, or folding paper for origami.

How Do I Know if I Have ASMR?
Limited research on the subject suggests that if you are a person who experiences ASMR, you may very well have done so first as a young child. In a report by a British research group that surveyed 500 adults who used ASMR videos, slightly more than one-half of the respondents said that they first felt an ASMR response between the ages of 5 and 10. Some people do first have an ASMR experience in adulthood, though. (2)

You may respond to ASMR triggers, such as receiving gentle care from another person in real life, but not respond to ASMR videos. In fact, even if you respond to ASMR triggers in the physical world, you may find ASMR videos unpleasant or distasteful.

How Does ASMR Work?
Public interest in ASMR has reached high levels. However, the degree to which science can explain ASMR is quite limited. Only a few scientists have been studying ASMR, and they have been doing so for only a few years. Still, these researchers have drawn some conclusions about ASMR.

Below are some findings from a 2018 study in the journal PloS One (3):

ASMR videos really do elicit tingling sensations along with positive emotions in those people who are prone to have ASMR. The videos do not have this effect on other people.
ASMR fosters a complex, mixed emotional state. The positive feelings that the videos create include both calmness and excitement. Although these two emotions may sound like opposites, psychologists have long known that people can have opposite emotions at the same time. For example, nostalgia involves feelings of happiness tinged with sadness.
ASMR has measurable effects on the body, and these effects tie in with the videos creating mixed emotions. For instance, ASMR is associated with a slowing heart rate, which is a sign of relaxation. It also is associated with the increased ability of the skin to conduct electricity (skin conductance), which is a measure of physical arousal.
ASMR increases a person’s feeling of being connected with other people.
Future studies are likely to provide a deeper understanding of how ASMR actually works to affect the body, including the brain.

Although the research is limited, there are some studies showing changes in brain function and activity, and potential mechanisms.

One 2019 study found that participants who responded to ASMR triggers had significantly less connectivity between their frontal lobes and areas of the brain that are involved with sensory-attention compared to control groups. This suggests that they may have less ability to inhibit sensory-emotional experiences that are the hallmark of ASMR. (4)

Another study from 2021 also found that participants who were ASMR-triggerable by self-report had increased alpha and gamma wave activity on tests measuring brain activity while watching or listening to ASMR content. This was not seen when they were shown non-ASMR triggering video and audio. (5)

And then a 2018 study  found an association between those who report ASMR responses and their degree of reported mindfulness and curiosity on validated scales. The authors concluded the sensory and emotional experiences characteristic of ASMR and the capacity to experience ASMR may be partially explained by the degree of mindfulness of the person watching an ASMR video. Potential Benefits of ASMR
The vast majority of people — 98 percent in one study — who seek out ASMR videos do so to relax. Eighty-two percent of that group sought the videos specifically for help with sleep. Seventy-percent of the group used the videos to deal with anxiety and stress. (2)

“I was totally amazed [by the videos’ effects],” stated one survey participant. “I started feeling an extremely relaxed trance-like state that I didn’t want to end … a little like how I have read perfect meditation should be but I never achieved.”

The fact that people seek ASMR for help with sleep and mood issues has also emerged as a key finding in other research. (3)

A newer study, published in 2022, conducted an uncontrolled online study with more than a 1,000 participants and assessed their mood and arousal levels before and after watching an ASMR video. All participants subjectively showed an increase in relaxation and improved mood. (7)

Although ASMR videos are popular, just about all research to date focuses only on immediate or short-term effects. There is no solid research on long-term effects.

Can ASMR Help Me Sleep?
Hundreds of thousands of people use ASMR videos for help sleeping, and research confirms that ASMR does induce physical changes in the body, such as a slower heart rate, that would go along with a relaxed state. But more research would be needed to fully confirm if ASMR videos would be an effective treatment for insomnia.

ASMR Triggers: Stimulations and Sensations
Certain ASMR triggers stand out for being mentioned frequently by people who experience the response. Keep in mind that ASMR triggers can be effective when a person experiences them in the real world or observes them either in person or online.

Common visual and audible triggers include:

Haircuts and hair brushing
Massages and other situations in which one person is gently giving another person close personal attention
People doing repetitive tasks, such as folding laundry or working at crafts
Soft sounds, such as whispering, low laughter, book pages being turned, or gentle scraping
Crisp sounds, such as tapping fingernails or metallic foil being crunched
Loud sounds, such as those from a vacuum cleaner or airplane

ASMRtists: Both Intentional and Unintentional ASMR
Some creators make videos expressly to induce ASMR, and ASMR users seek out these videos for the good feelings that they foster. This is intentional ASMR. Among the most popular such creators are the following ASMRtists:

Maria, creator of Gentle Whispering ASMR
Emma, creator of WhispersRed ASMR
Other superstars of the ASMR world never even heard of the term. Their videos have just turned out to provide content that is soothing and ASMR-inducing to lots of people. These creators are considered unintentional ASMRtists. The most famous of them is the late art teacher Bob Ross.

How Popular Are ASMR Videos?
ASMR videos first emerged in large numbers online in about 2010. They began to attract millions of views fairly quickly and remain hugely popular today.

Media giants, such as The New York Times, The New Yorker magazine, and CNBC.com, have run long stories about ASMR videos and the online entrepreneurs who create them, including Maria. Maria’s YouTube channel has more than two million subscribers.

Air pollution kills over 1,200 youth in Europe every year

The world is dealing with the tangible effects of climate change, global warming and extensive pollution with every passing day. The levels of air pollution have reached such alarming levels that it kills over 1,200 people under the age of 18 in Europe each year, considerably raising the risk of disease later in life, according to the European Environment Agency (EEA) assessments.

While emissions of essential air pollutants have decreased in recent decades, European air pollution levels remain dangerous. In addition, the EEA said in a press release that children and adolescents are more vulnerable to air pollution as their bodies, organs, and immune systems are still developing.

It added that until general air pollution is decreased to safe levels, increasing air quality around schools and kindergartens and during activities such as school commutes and sports can help reduce children's exposure.

According to preliminary data from 2022, central-eastern Europe and Italy reported the highest concentrations of delicate particulate matter (PM2.5) primarily due to the burning of solid fuels such as coal for domestic heating and their use in industry.

"Air pollution levels across Europe are still unsafe and European air quality policies should aim to protect all citizens, but especially our children, who are most vulnerable to the health impacts of air pollution," said Hans Bruyninckx, EEA executive director.

"It is urgent that we continue to step up measures at the EU, national and local levels to protect our children, who cannot protect themselves. The surest way to keep them safe is by making the air we breathe cleaner," Bruyninckx added.

Southern lights? Powerful solar storm brings dazzling auroras south

Have you ever wanted to see the northern lights, but you don't want to travel all the way north? No problem as the north – or the northern lights at least – might just be coming to you down south after an intense solar storm has the northern lights gracing the skies farther south than usual.

A blast of superhot material from the sun late last week hurled scorching gases known as plasma toward Earth at nearly 3 million kilometers (2 million miles) per hour, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Monday.

Earth felt the brunt of the storm Sunday, according to NOAA, with forecasters warning operators of power plants and spacecraft of the potential for disruption.

Auroras were reported across parts of Europe and Asia. In the U.S., skygazers took in the sights from Wisconsin, Washington State, Colorado, California, New Mexico and even Arizona — mostly a reddish glow instead of the typical green shimmer.

"I don't want any expectations of these green curtains moving back and forth" so far south, said Bill Murtagh, program coordinator at the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.

Although conditions have eased, auroras might still be visible as far south as South Dakota and Iowa late Monday and early Tuesday if skies are dark.

The farther north, the better the show as the energized particles interact with the atmosphere closer to Earth, according to Murtagh. The farther south, the curvature of the Earth cuts off the most dazzling scenes as the particles interact higher in the atmosphere.

Murtagh said light pollution in Boulder prevented him from seeing the auroras Sunday night. But there could be more opportunities as the solar cycle ramps up.

"Stay tuned, more to come," he said.

This was the third severe geomagnetic storm since the current 11-year solar cycle began in 2019, according to NOAA. The agency expects the cycle to peak in 2024.

For those down under, the southern lights should provide equally good shows, Murtagh said.

How to Avoid Vaginal Cuts

Although the term “vaginal cuts” may sound a little scary, they occur often in women who are sexually active. These small abrasions, cuts, and tears are usually not serious, but they can be uncomfortable and bothersome.

“Vaginal cuts are relatively common, even in women who don’t have any underlying abnormality,” says Grace Evins, MD, a gynecologist at Live Well in WNC in Asheville, North Carolina.

The most common cause of tiny vaginal tears or cuts (apart from childbirth) is penetration during sex, according to UW Medicine.

Fortunately, most vaginal cuts aren’t medically serious. If you know the cause and think it’s superficial, a visit to the doctor isn’t necessary, UW Medicine says. But that doesn’t mean you should dismiss them as no big deal. The discomfort caused by vaginal cuts can make sex unpleasant and can affect your overall quality of life.

The good news is that there are tools and strategies to help prevent cuts from happening in the first place. Read on to find out what the experts say.

What Causes Vaginal Cuts?
When you’re aroused, the vagina naturally produces fluids that lubricate the area during sexual activity, reducing friction that can irritate or tear the vaginal tissue. But many variables can affect how much lubrication your body produces. And if there isn’t enough natural moisture created, tearing can occur.

“Vaginal dryness is often part of the problem, because dryness creates friction, and that’s the main reason the tears and abrasions occur,” says Dr. Evins.

Other factors play a role in vaginal dryness.

Menopause “The vagina has natural defenses to reduce the chance of injury. In the presence of estrogen, which is much higher in premenopausal women, there are many factors that create an environment that’s more resilient and less vulnerable to damage to the superficial skin or vaginal mucosa,” Evins explains.

For starters, estrogen improves blood flow to the area, which helps keep the vagina moist, she says. The hormone also helps maintain the thickness of the vaginal lining and keeps the surrounding tissue flexible (also called elasticity).

Post-menopausal women have lower levels of estrogen, which can cause thinning, drying, and inflammation of the vaginal walls, all of which make vaginal cuts more likely, says Evins.

Not enough foreplay Sexual excitement causes the secretion of vaginal fluids. If you skip foreplay or you don’t spend enough time getting turned on, your body doesn’t have a chance to create the natural lubrication that can make penetration more comfortable and less likely to result in tearing, according to UW Medicine.

History of abuse Although this is not the most common cause of vaginal dryness, a history of sexual abuse can affect a woman’s relationship to sex, according to the Sexual Medicine Society of North America.

“Abuse can disrupt the stages of sexual response in women, beginning with arousal and lubrication. Women who have fear around past experiences of painful rather than pleasurable encounters will have more dryness as a result,” says Evins.

Additionally, painful and traumatic experiences in the past during sex may cause a woman’s body to guard against future pain, she says.

“In anticipation of a repeat painful experience, women may involuntarily contract the powerful pelvic muscles narrowing the aperture of the vagina, creating greater friction with penetration. Another word for this involuntary muscle contraction is vaginismus,” says Evins.

Pelvic floor muscles “Tight or overactive pelvic floor muscles can cause decreased blood flow to the vagina and vulvar tissues. That impacts vagina tissue health, making it more likely to be thin and dry,” says Ashley Rawlins, PT, DPT, a doctor of physical therapy who specializes in pelvic and obstetric health at Origin Physical Therapy in Dallas.

Pelvic floor issues can also make penetration more difficult, says Dr. Rawlins. “If those pelvic floor muscles that surround the vaginal opening aren’t releasing, relaxing, and opening for penetration, it can put more stress on the tissue and leave you more at risk for injury,” she says.

Other causes of vaginal cuts Sex toys are sometimes made of materials that are irritating to the skin, or they might have sharp or rough edges. Even a tampon that rubs against you the wrong way may cause tiny tears, says Rawlins.

How Can Vaginal Cuts Be Prevented?
Since vaginal dryness is often responsible, increasing wetness in the vagina during sexual activity is often the best way to go. The following are some ways to do this.

Lubricants
Lubricant, also called lube, is a very helpful tool with any sort of penetration, says Rawlins. “These products have come a long way. Gone are the days when there were just one or two options,” she says.

Water-based lubricants Water-based lubes are most common, says Rawlins. “You may have to do some label reading because there are some key differences between products,” she says.

Before buying, make sure the lube doesn’t contain irritating ingredients, such as paraffins, propylene glycol, glycerin, petroleum, or petroleum-based ingredients. “These can increase the risk for irritation, bacterial overgrowth, and even infection, which can further impair the skin’s health,” says Rawlins.

Rawlins also recommends avoiding lubes that have scents and tastes, or that “heat” things up. “These can irritate mucosal tissue, especially if it’s already dry or sensitive.”

Flavored lubes contain sugar and can cause yeast infections, according to the University of Texas in Austin’s University Health Services.

Natural oils Olive oil and coconut oil are natural, and some women really like them, says Rawlins. But oils can stain fabric and undermine the strength of condoms, increasing the risk of breakage, per UT Austin University Health Services.

Silicone-based lubricants “These lubes are very popular, in part because they tend to last longer than water-based lubricants,” says Rawlins.

If you’re using sex toys or vibrators made with silicone, be aware that silicone-based lubes can break down that material and cause tiny cracks in the devices, she says. “And that may cause bacterial growth which can then be transmitted to you or your partner when using it later,” says Rawlins.

Rawlins recommends trying different kinds of lubricants to find the one that suits you. “It is very individual. Don’t just take a friend’s recommendation, because what they like might not be what’s best for you.”

More Foreplay
The improved moisture that typically results from foreplay reduces friction and the possibility of vaginal cuts, says Evins. Increased foreplay gives the vagina the time (and motivation) to naturally lubricate itself.

Sexual Positions
When having sex that involves penetration, certain positions may make vaginal cuts or painful friction more likely, says Evins. “Try positions that allow women more control to reduce the likelihood of vagina cuts,” she says.

Vaginal Estrogen
Post-menopausal women who have issues with vaginal dryness can talk with a provider about using an FDA-approved vaginal estradiol product. Available by prescription, the therapy comes in different forms, including creams, tablets, and vaginal suppositories, says Evins.

Physical Therapy
If your provider determines that your vaginal cuts are related to pelvic floor overactivity, a physical therapist who specializes in pelvic floor issues may help, says Rawlins.

Terrifying Critics decry US plan to stop migrants at Darien Gap

A US-backed plan to stop migrants from crossing the lawless Darién Gap will likely fail and only push desperate people further into the hands of merciless people-trafficking organisations, migration experts have warned.

The US Department of Homeland Security announced on Tuesday that it had brokered a deal with the Colombian and Panamanian governments to halt migrants crossing the land bridge on their journey northward to the US.

The number of people traversing the lawless strip of land between Colombia and Panama has spiked to record numbers in the last two years.

In an effort to bring those numbers down, the three governments will execute a 60-day campaign to “end the illicit movement of people and goods through the Darién by both land and maritime corridors”, they said in a joint statement.

The communique gave little information on how migrants would be stopped but the homeland security secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, told the Spanish news agency EFE that any illegal migrants making the trip will be “turned back”.

Given that the Darién Gap is a lawless region run by armed groups, it is likely the plan would require militarisation, a scenario which Nicole Phillips, legal director of Haitian Bridge, an immigration policy nonprofit, described as “terrifying”.

Simultaneously, the US said it would try to take down drug and people-trafficking networks with intelligence operations and open “new lawful and flexible pathways for tens of thousands of migrants and refugees” so they are not forced to risk their lives on the Darién route.

“It sounds like a good idea on paper but it’s not an effective way of reducing migration,” warned Phillips.

Colombian and Panamanian governments have never established control over the 60-mile stretch of dense jungle between the two countries.

Decaying bodies of migrants are routinely found deep in the rainforest, having been lost to its turbulent rivers, venomous snakes and steep ravines.

Those who survive the arduous two-week trek are at the mercy of armed groups that frequently rob and rape vulnerable migrants.

Given the risk that migrants already undergo fleeing poverty or persecution, Blaine Bookey at the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies said she doubted authorities can deter them from making the trip.

More likely, migrants will be pushed further underground and forced to take more dangerous routes.

“When people are fleeing for their lives and there is no opportunity to seek safety, they will find a way,” said Bookey.

Only the poorest of migrants who cannot afford to take a boat in order to skip the trek walk through the Darién Gap. And traffickers consistently devise new routes that subject migrants to new risks.

Last month the Colombian navy intercepted 30 Venezuelans who had taken a tiny boat from the Colombian island of San Andres to Central America, 15 of whom were reportedly abandoned on an island.

“You might close the Darién but who knows what the smugglers will imagine,” said Bookey.

Despite the harrowing tales of robbery, rape and death in the Darién Gap, the number of people and families making the journey surged in 2022 to record levels and continues to grow.

According to Panamanian migration officials, 88,000 have made the trip so far this year – seven times as many as in the same period last year. Officials estimate that many as 400,000 will take the route in 2023.

Facing pressure from conservatives, the Biden administration is trying to cut down on irregular migration and has set its sights on the booming foot traffic through the Darién.

Currently, a Trump administration law, Title 42, uses the pandemic as justification to prohibit asylum claims at the US-Mexico land border, requiring Venezuelans, Nicaraguans, Haitians and Cubans to apply formally and meet certain requirements instead.

But Title 42 is set to expire in May. “We are concerned that there may be an increase in the level of migration,” Mayorkas, the US homeland security secretary, said.

The US says it plans to make it easier to migrate legally so that migrants no longer need to make one of the most dangerous treks in the world.

The proposal is encouraging, but the most desperate migrants often cannot meet the requisites due to the dire conditions in the countries from which they are fleeing, said Phillips.

In Haiti – with an economy, health system and democracy that are being torn apart by armed bandits warring for control of the country – some do not have contacts in the US to vouch for them and even more do not have enough money to travel by air.

Passports have also become so scarce that corrupt officials are selling them to vulnerable women in exchange for sex, Phillips said.

“They will find other ways, and the smugglers who want to make money will also find other ways that are more dangerous,” Phillips added. “The thought of [the US, Panama and Colombia] further militarising in order to keep migrants out is terrifying for people’s safety.”

She said it was disappointing that human rights were not mentioned even once in the trilateral statement, given the dire and growing humanitarian crisis in the Darién.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which attends to migrants needing medical assistance when they emerge from the jungle in Panama, says it welcomes initiatives to protect migrants but is “concerned” by the possible militarisation of borders.

“We have seen in other countries that it can lead to more danger, not ensuring basic services and may increase suffering,” Luis Eguiluz, head of mission for MSF Colombia and Panama, said.

There are also questions as to how migrants from countries outside of Latin America would be dealt with at the border.

“What about the migrants coming from the Middle East, Africa and Asia and transiting through Colombia?” asked Giacomo Finzi, a researcher at the National University of Colombia.

Shocking Facts About Women’s Suffrage We Weren’t Taught in School

One of the fundamental rights we have as human beings is to vote, which underlines just how important the public is in decision-making in government.

However, this wasn’t always the case – at least for women. The road to getting that opportunity wasn’t smooth as well, and there’s definitely a lot of visionaries we should be thankful for because they fought long and hard to make sure that electing the right people they deem fit would be possible for everyone, men and women alike.

Myths Surrounding Women’s Suffrage

Those who have studied history may not find the abovementioned facts interesting, however, not everything we read that is based on what allegedly went down in history is true.

There are common misconceptions that up until now are taught in schools, proving that we may have relied on myths all the while, which was what was shown in the “Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence,” an exhibition in Smithsonian Gallery that bares the chaotic moments on the road to success.

Seneca Convention as the Start of the Movement
We’ve always learned that the 1848 meeting in Seneca Falls, New York was monumental, with many people believing that it began the movement, however, Carnegie Mellon University associate professor Lisa Tetrault begged to differ.

The scholar further contends that the event, albeit significant for demanding the right to vote for women in the United States, wasn’t to be credited for the launch of the Suffrage movement.

To back her claims up, the author of “The Myth of Seneca Falls: Memory and the Women’s Suffrage Movement, 1848-1898” said that attendees didn’t give any special importance to it and no one saw the convention as the start of the movement.

Then how did Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who is considered the principal philosopher of the movement, and her recruit Susan B. Anthony become the leaders of this?

Tetrault argues that the cohort constructed the legend to push their positions as the pioneers of the movement.

The author further narrated that Susan wasn’t even at the 1848 convention, but news reports said otherwise.

What cemented their founding titles was the “History of Woman Suffrage,” which noticeably missed out on African-American women.

Clash
Not all women were in good terms during the time, which was evident during the 1869 American Equal Rights Association meeting where Elizabeth left a very controversial message condemning the possibility that white women would fall inferior to black men who used to be slaves.

Historian Martha S. Jones noted that the supposed suffragist leader was clearly going against the 15th Amendment.

This resulted in two groups of white women: the National Woman Suffrage Association led by Elizabeth and Susan, and the American Woman Suffrage Association of Lucy Stone.

By 1890s the National Association of Colored Women was formed by Mary Church Terrell and Ida B. Wells. Elizabeth and Susan, meanwhile, got funding from George Francis Train, which may have disdained their image throughout.

However, Kate Clarke Lemay, the exhibition curator, believes the duo had to make a tough decision because they were left with no choice. Either they accept the money or the movement will be no more.

Hippopotamus linked to Escobar killed on Colombian highway

Colombia has logged its first hippopotamus-caused road traffic accident after a car crashed into one of the animals at high speed, leaving the vehicle mangled and the two-tonne mammal lying lifeless and bloodied across a highway.

The hippo was declared dead soon after the crash on Tuesday night in the municipality of Doradal on a highway connecting the cities of Bogotá and Medellín, local environmental authorities said.

The car’s driver was reportedly unharmed, though images show that the front end of the vehicle was almost entirely destroyed and debris from the crash and blood from the hippo’s carcass was smeared across the tarmac.

The hippo is a descendant of four animals imported from Africa to Colombia by Escobar at the height of the drug lord’s power in the 1980s.

The beasts escaped following Escobar’s death, and with no predators in the Colombian countryside, they have multiplied into a plague of 150, becoming a threat to local people and a headache for Colombia’s environment ministry.

Hippo attacks on people have become more common in recent years, as the animals are highly territorial.

Residents in the state of Antioquia live in growing fear of the invasive animals, who are jeopardising the livelihoods of local fishers and endangering the many animal species that inhabit Colombia’s principal river.

The accident reveals yet another danger that the invasive hippos pose to the local community, said Luz Dámaris Luján, a community leader in Estacion Pita, a municipality 10km away from the scene of the crash.

“Everyone around here is terrified because we are flooded with these hippopotamuses. Now we’re at the point where we can’t even go out at night any more,” she said. “The government needs to hurry up and do something, because we are getting tired of this.”

Last month, local fishers warned that it was likely only a matter of time before local residents killed one of the animals – although they predicted that it would be with bullets, not a 4x4.

Other Colombians mourned the loss of the giant herbivore on social media and lamented the dark legacy of Escobar.

“You feel sad for an innocent being that was just passing by. We should all feel guilty, because it is the work of us human beings,” posted Luisa Lozano in response to a video showing the scene of the accident.

The invasive species has been a thorny issue for successive Colombian governments. Studies estimate the population could rise as high as 1,400 by 2034, and ecologists warn that they must be culled before they cause more irreversible damage to the delicate ecosystem of the Magdalena river or cause their first human fatality.

Recently, local officials have proposed shipping 70 of the animals to zoos and sanctuaries in Mexico and India, though experts are sceptical that the plan will succeed.

Aníbal Gaviria Correa, the governor of Antioquia state, who is heading the plan to export Escobar’s hippos, tweeted gruesome images of the crash and called for the president, Gustavo Petro, and the environment minister, Susana Muhamad, to support him in his plans to fly the beasts abroad.

“This painful accident reaffirms the importance of urgently translocating the hippos from Doradal to India and Mexico … Please help us with permits for the transfer of these majestic animals,”

The fire department in Colombia has reported that a hippopotamus was hit and killed by a vehicle on the Bogota-Medellin highway. The incident occurred near the estate where the late drug lord Pablo Escobar had introduced the semi-aquatic mammal that has now become an invasive species.

The animal, weighing more than a ton, was found lying on the road near a hacienda that belonged to Escobar. Maria Magdalena Perez, fire department commander in the northwest municipality of Puerto Triunfo, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Tuesday night.

The cocaine baron, killed in a 1993 shootout with police, had brought a small herd of hippos to Colombia in the late 1980s.

After his death, the animals were left to roam freely in the Antioquia department's hot, marshy area. Environmental authorities have been unable to curb the population, which now stands at 150 animals.

The latest hippo car crash destroyed the front end of a pickup truck, but no people were injured.

"There was only one lad, unharmed," said Perez.

A hippo was also involved in a car crash in the same area in December, but firefighters said the animal survived.

Colombia's environment ministry declared the hippos an invasive species last year, which opened the door to an eventual cull.

Earlier efforts at a sterilization program to control the population failed.

Experts warn that the animals' uncontrolled reproduction threatens the local population and wildlife.

In March, the governor of Antioquia announced a plan to transfer 70 hippos to overseas sanctuaries in Mexico and India.

The operation is expected to cost $3.5 million and involves transporting the hippos about 150 kilometers (93 miles) by land to the nearest international airport.

Could the Next War be Triggered by Famine or an Epidemic?

Remember when Alfred Henry Lewis said that the only thing keeping humans from killing each other is food? The American journalist wasn’t too far from the truth and we’re starting to see how the next war could thrust us into real-life hunger games.

Famines and Wars
The clues have been there all along, and they’ve been scattered across history books. Now new historic research is proving a direct correlation between natural disasters like famines with global wars.

Just one look at the history of China will shed more light on this hypothesis, proving that hunger can actually cloud our judgment and ability to think rationally.

In the case of a famine, hundreds of thousands, or even millions, are left to fight it out for survival, which is the natural human instinct in a time of crisis.

Now with climate change looming over the horizon, the possibility of a war isn’t that improbable, and unlike popular belief, the next one will most likely be fought for survival instead of power.

The research highlights the urgency to curb global warming that is wreaking havoc on our environment and the planet. The occurrences of extreme weather conditions and natural disasters like floods, volcano eruptions, wildfires and more are a looking glass into the planet’s horrifying future.

Another War on the Horizon?
Researchers have proven time and time again that these natural disasters will only get more prevalent as time goes by if we don’t put an end to excessive greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientists are also concerned about the socio-economic impact of these natural threats, especially after observing the current tensions in Syria which were likely brought upon by a severe drought in the region, leading to an uprising against the country’s government.v

If there is any truth to this correlation, this could mean that a disaster-prone zone like California could also be at the risk of conflict outbreaks.

However, many argue that California has greater immunity against such outcomes since it is one of the richest states in the world.

Californian residents have enough means to protect themselves against environmental shocks like the recent wildfires that wiped out many neighborhoods in the zone.

But in other less privileged parts of the world, there is a greater risk of conflict once the global climate problems begin to exacerbate over time.

11:38 Do Women Need to Douche?
Do Women Need to Douche?

Douche means "to wash" or "to soak" in French and refers to the practice of washing or rinsing out the vagina using water or some other fluid. Vaginal douches were first commercially produced in the 1800s, but douching itself was practiced long before that, says Fatima Daoud Yilmaz, MD, an ob-gyn at Stony Brook Medicine in New York.

Typically found in the feminine care aisle of most pharmacies and grocery stores, douche solution is usually a mix of water and vinegar, baking soda, or iodine. Douching is performed by squirting the solution into the vagina through a tube or nozzle, and the water mixture then comes back out through the vagina.

In 2002, more than 30 percent of women ages 15 to 44 reported douching, according to the National Survey of Family Growth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). By 2019, that figure had dropped to about 11 percent.

Does douching have benefits for some women in some situations? None whatsoever, says Dr. Daoud Yilmaz. “Douching is not necessary for any women. There is no medical reason to douche,” she says.

Douching Leaves the Vagina Vulnerable to Unhealthy Bacteria, Viruses, and Yeast
Douching is not only unnecessary but can actually do more harm than good, says Daoud Yilmaz.

The vagina is a self-cleaning organ, according to Michigan Women’s Health. The cervix and the walls of the vagina create a small amount of mucous that carries menstrual blood, old cells, and other matter out of the vagina. “These cell layers are constantly sloughing away, and when they do, they take the bacteria and viruses along with them,” says Daoud Yilmaz.

Many douching products alter the pH, or acidity, inside the vagina to abnormally high levels, according to Michigan Women’s Health. This can leave the vagina more vulnerable to unhealthy bacteria, viruses, and yeast, says Daoud Yilmaz.

Douching can also disturb antibodies that produce antimicrobial proteins, found in the outer layer of cells that line a healthy vagina. Disrupting this defensive layer of the vagina can predispose one to infection, including bacterial vaginosis, yeast, and sexually transmitted infections, says Daoud Yilmaz.

Douching Linked With Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and UTIs
When you douche, you can also push pathogens (things like bad bacteria and viruses) upwards toward the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes, says Daoud Yilmaz.

“This can lead to a condition called pelvic inflammatory disease (PID),” she says.

PID can cause scarring in the fallopian tubes and lead to infertility or ectopic pregnancy, says Daoud Yilmaz. In some cases, an abscess can form in the reproductive tract as a result of PID and potentially cause a life-threatening infection if left untreated, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Douching may also increase the risk of developing a urinary tract infection (UTI). While UTIs are usually caused by fecal bacteria entering the urethra as opposed to vaginal bacteria, douching can still irritate the lining of the urethra and result in infection, says Daoud Yilmaz.

Busting the Most Common Myths About Douching
So why do some women still choose to douche? Experts say it may be due to a few myths about douching that have taken root. These myths include:

Douching is a hygienic part of a woman's normal cleansing process. Again, no. The vagina is designed to clean itself, says Daoud Yilmaz. Douching will wash away menstrual blood and other matter, but it also changes the pH of the vagina, leaving it vulnerable to infection.

Douche is needed to get rid of a vagina's odor. All vaginas create discharge and have a slight odor that can fluctuate throughout the month. That’s normal and natural, says Daoud Yilmaz.

“The vulva and vagina should not smell like vanilla or whatever the feminine care aisle is telling you it should smell like,” she says.

An unusual vaginal odor could be a sign of a bacterial infection, bladder infection, or sexually transmitted infection (STI), according to the CDC. “If you think there is something wrong, rather than masking it with douching, feminine washes, or deodorants, seek medical attention to determine what, if anything, is wrong,” says Daoud Yilmaz.

Douching can prevent pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases. Douching after sex does not wash semen out of the vagina or prevent pregnancy. Douching has, however, been linked to infertility and associated with a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy, according to the Office on Women's Health (OWH).

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fetus begins developing anywhere outside of the womb, often in the fallopian tube. This is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition. Douching during pregnancy may also increase the risk that a woman will have a preterm baby.

Douching doesn’t prevent sexually transmitted infections either. In fact, it can increase your risk of getting an STI, including HIV, per the OWH.

Douching can help treat a bacterial infection. As stated earlier, douching can spread vaginal infections further into your pelvis. It may also make it more difficult for your doctor to find and treat your infection, since douching disrupts the normal vaginal environment.

“Often, underlying medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also lead to conditions such as bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections,” says Daoud Yilmaz. In addition to douching, these can include poorly controlled diabetes, recent antibiotic use, daily use of panty liners, spermicide use, and wearing of tight synthetic underwear, which can create environments that pathogens love, she says.

“This is why consultation with a physician is always recommended to get to the root cause of the issue and create a treatment plan that is tailored for you,” she says.

How to Clean Your Vagina
Women should never try to clean their vaginas, says Daoud Yilmaz. “If a woman feels that there is something wrong, such as an unusual odor, new discharge, pain, abnormal bleeding, or itching, she should seek medical attention,” she says.

“If someone is looking to clean their vulva (the outer part of the female genitalia), I would recommend using lukewarm water only. There are times when more than water may be needed, such as during menstruation, after working out, or after intercourse,” she says.

In those cases, using a gentle, undyed plain soap without any fragrance externally on an as-needed basis is safe, though this may still be too harsh for those with sensitive skin, says Daoud Yilmaz.

15:35 Managing Your Emotional Health With Vitiligo
Managing Your Emotional Health With Vitiligo

If you have vitiligo — an autoimmune condition that causes skin to lose color in patches — you likely know that it’s more than just a cosmetic problem. Although vitiligo isn’t contagious or fatal, it is a chronic condition whose main impact can be psychological because it’s so visible to other people.

According to a September 2021 article published in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, people with vitiligo often experience emotional and mental issues like low self-esteem or confidence, sleep problems, anxiety disorders, negative self-perception, loss of identity, and depression, due to living with this highly visible condition.

About 75 percent of people with vitiligo report having psychiatric issues such as depression, anxiety, and stress, according to a September 2021 study published in the journal Middle East Current Psychiatry.

Although there are treatments available, vitiligo has no cure. As an autoimmune condition — meaning the immune system attacks healthy cells – people with vitiligo may be at higher risk of developing other autoimmune disorders, like type 1 diabetes, hypothyroidism, psoriasis, and Crohn’s disease, according to the National Library of Medicine.

While these risks are distressing enough, people with vitiligo — especially people with darker skin tones — can also face stigmatization and discrimination in their experiences with others due to their appearance.

Although vitiligo can impact your well-being, there are ways you can live confidently with the condition.

How Vitiligo Can Impact You
According to Mohammad Jafferany, MD, professor of psychodermatology, psychiatry, and behavioral sciences at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, vitiligo is classified as a secondary psychiatric disorder, meaning though vitiligo skin patches don’t cause any physical damage, their psychological consequences can be profound. Vitiligo can interfere with almost every aspect of a person’s life: career, relationships, identity, behavior, habits, and mental and emotional health.

“Some people just stop going outside or working to avoid stigma and meeting with people,” Dr. Jafferany says. As a result, they may experience loneliness, social isolation, and in more severe cases, suicidal thoughts and intents.

In March 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration conducted a public meeting to hear how people with vitiligo and their caregivers experience the condition. Many participants said it caused them to have anxiety, suicidal thoughts, low self-confidence, and loss of identity. Due to the stigma attached to the condition, they’ve also had difficulty growing friendships and relationships and meaningfully engaging in everyday and social activities.

Cultural View of Vitiligo
The societal aspect of vitiligo should not be ignored, Jafferany says. In many cultures around the world, particularly in countries with people who have darker skin tones, those with vitiligo have a higher incidence of relationship breakups and divorces and may struggle to find a partner, he says. Many people mistakenly think vitiligo is contagious. Because of that, people with vitiligo are especially prone to experiencing discrimination, loss of privileges and opportunities, and difficulty progressing in different aspects of their life owing to their appearance.

For these reasons, researchers in an article published in the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology noted that vitiligo is “one of the most psychologically devastating diseases in dermatology,” with its impact most prominent in racial and ethnic groups with darker skin.

How You Can Feel More Confident With Vitiligo
Despite how disruptive living with vitiligo can be, you can take control of your experience and thrive with this condition. Consider these strategies:

1. Acknowledge your feelings.
Vitiligo can make you feel self-conscious and have other unpleasant emotions, which can be difficult. But rather than ignore these feelings, it’s better to own them, says Brett King, MD, PhD, a dermatologist at Yale Dermatology in Middlebury, Connecticut, and associate professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine. “Too often, people with vitiligo hear things like, ‘It could be worse,’ or ‘You could have cancer,’” Dr. King says. Although they might mean well, people who make such statements can dismiss your feelings. Rather than discounting yourself, instead, acknowledge your emotions.

2. Learn about your condition.
Understanding your symptoms and potential treatment options can make you feel more in control of the condition and your overall health. “A basic understanding of what causes skin-color change in vitiligo is an essential step toward building self-confidence,” Jafferany says.

With more knowledge, you can become your own advocate, identifying and dispelling myths about vitiligo — including those that could affect your mood and confidence — and asking for the best treatment for you when you’re talking with a dermatologist. Check out the Global Vitiligo Foundation, the Vitiligo Research Foundation, and the American Academy of Dermatology for information.

3. Rely on your support system.
Although living with vitiligo can feel isolating, you don’t have to experience it alone. A solid support system, which may include family members, friends, and colleagues, plays a significant role in mitigating the many psychological impacts of vitiligo, according to Jafferany. “Even if they don’t personally have vitiligo, connecting with others may help remind you that you are a valuable part of society,” he says.

4. Join support groups.
It can be helpful to talk to others who know exactly what you’re going through. By participating in vitiligo support groups, you can meet people who can relate to you, feel less isolated, and hear how others are navigating life with the condition. In addition, having conversations with people who make you feel seen can help you develop resilience, hope, and confidence with vitiligo, according to a study published in the Dermatology Online Journal.

Dr. Jafferany recommends finding support groups and other helpful resources through the Vitiligo Research Foundation, Vitiligo Support International, and Global Vitiligo Foundation.

5. Seek professional help.
A December 2022 article published in the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology found that cognitive behavioral therapy — a type of talk therapy — can improve mental symptoms, stress levels, and quality of life in people with vitiligo and other skin diseases.

If you’re experiencing overwhelming symptoms of depression, anxiety, or stress, Jafferany advises seeking professional counseling to learn coping skills and treat your symptoms. You may want to look specifically for a psychodermatologist — a therapist who works with people who have skin conditions — or another therapist who has experience working with people with chronic health conditions.

6. Practice body positivity.
Learning to appreciate your appearance can help you live unapologetically with vitiligo. Start with being comfortable with yourself, advises Alex Dimitriu, MD, founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine in California. “This can be built on the core belief that appearances are only skin deep, and your personality, kindness, intelligence, or other attributes you cherish matter far more than anything on the outside,” Dr. Dimitriu says. It might also help to realize that people who judge your color or appearance may not be the people you want in your life.

7. Consider treatment for vitiligo.
Because vitiligo isn’t life-threatening or contagious, you can decide whether you want to treat it. If it feels right to cover it up — such as with microskin — cover it up, King says. “You can also do nothing and let it show if that feels right, too.”

If you notice people staring at you, King recommends helping to educate them by saying, “I see you noticed the white spots on my skin. I have a condition called vitiligo, where the skin loses color leading to white spots. But I’m okay.”

“Doing this can give you more control over what’s happening, which can be helpful,” he explains.

Other vitiligo treatments include:

Medications like topical steroids, ruxolitinib, or calcineurin inhibitors
Light therapy
Depigmentation therapy
Surgeries like melanocyte transplants, micro pigmentation, and skin grafting
You can explore these treatment options with a dermatologist, who can help you decide which treatment may be best for you.

SHOCKING Climate Change Study Shows Polar Bears Could Go Extinct Sooner Than Expected

Climate change is one of the biggest crises we are facing in the current day and age, one that could destroy the entire north pole and its inhabitants if not tackled before it’s too late.

A new scary study is now saying that the warming temperatures could mean that polar bears will soon run out of places to dig their birthing dens.

Birthing Dens in Danger
Northern Alaska has always been known for its year-round snow, but this could gradually change as the planet gets hotter each year.

The snow in the north pole isn’t just important for keeping the human civilization above water but it is also essential for carrying forward the species of polar bears, who are only able to give birth in the dead of winter, where the layer of snow is thick enough to dig birthing dens.

After new polar bears are born, they often stay inside the dens for months on end to protect themselves from the snowstorms and sub-freezing temperatures.

But if climate change continues to wreak havoc, these newborn polar bears could soon have nowhere to hide when the temperature falls below -40 F.

This is an alarming scenario that could mean that the polar bears might be the first animal species to go extinct due to global warming.

Risk of Starvation
The study, recently presented at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco, highlighted the urgency to take climate change seriously before it’s too late to reverse the damage. The polar bear mothers could soon have nowhere to hibernate after giving birth if their habitat is destroyed.

One of the assistant researcher working at Colorado State University, Meghan Liu, said that the possibility of this scenario isn’t just likely but is also very imminent, with analytics indicating that the destruction of denning habitat could start within this century.

The fact that polar bears will be the first to be hit by climate change is not news to anybody. In fact, scientists have long been trying to warn us about the implications of reckless emission of greenhouse gases.

Steven Amstruo, who has been studying the polar bears’ habitats for over 3 decades, says that the thinning of ice sheets in the north pole could also increase the risk of starvation as most polar bears use ice as hunting grounds to catch seals.

01:13 9 Signs You’re in a Healthy Relationship
9 Signs You’re in a Healthy Relationship

You and your partner love trying new restaurants together, going on long bike rides, and traveling, but when it comes to being happy and healthy in a relationship, there are other things to consider besides having common interests.

What exactly makes a relationship healthy? “A great relationship is a safe place for both people to love, honor, and respect one another,” says Jennifer Howell, a leadership and relationship coach based in North Carolina. You can communicate your wants, needs, and boundaries, as well as listen to the other person.

A healthy relationship is important to cultivate because the opposite — a toxic relationship — takes a toll on your quality of life by heightening depression and anxiety, impacting sleep, causing you to take up unhealthy habits, and even impacting heart health, says Mary Jo Rapini, a licensed professional counselor in Houston who specializes in intimacy and sex therapy.

Being in a high-quality romantic relationship is associated with greater well-being, according to a study from 2019. But being single was far better for someone’s well-being than being in a less happy partnership, the study found.

What’s more, many couples in unhealthy relationships don’t know that they are, especially if they grew up in a household where it was the norm, says Rapini. So it’s all the more important to be able to identify where yours stands.

Here are nine signs you and your mate are a good match:

1. You’re Not Afraid to Speak Up
It’s easy to know when your partner does something you don’t like — maybe they don’t call you for two days or don’t help out around the house when you live together. But it’s not always easy to speak up and tell your significant other how you’re feeling. “This takes a lot of strength, self-confidence, and courage, because you have to come from a vulnerable place,” says Howell. In a healthy relationship, you’ll feel secure enough to be open with your partner.

2. Trust Is at the Core of the Relationship
Trust is foundational in all relationships, but with social media and always-on gadgets, it can become all too easy to snoop. But in a healthy relationship, you don’t need to do that. In part, that’s because your partner shows you they’re trustworthy. “They’re reliable and available. When they say they’ll be there, they’ll be there,” says Rapini. They also show you they trust you by giving you the freedom and space you need without checking up on you constantly — and that includes checking your phone, she says.

3. You Know Each Other’s Love Language
Many couples swear by the book The 5 Love Languages for a reason: In it, you discover your partner’s “love language" — the way they prefer to give and receive love (through words of affirmation, quality time, gifts, acts of service, or physical touch). In a healthy relationship, you’ve taken the time to learn each other’s “love language” so you can express your love in a way that works for you both, says Howell.

4. You Agree to Disagree on Certain Issues
Every couple fights. But contrary to what you might think, you don’t need to fix every issue. In fact, it’s okay to have a handful of topics that you two will never agree on. Sometimes, “it’s totally fine to agree to disagree. I think that’s healthy fighting,” explains Rapini. “In healthy relationships, there are at least five issues that are ‘no-talkers.’ They’re the issues that you both differ in opinion and perspective on, and that’s okay.”

5. You Encourage Each Other to Go After Your Goals
“Many of us have a dream or vision for our life, and especially as we age, we want to maintain those visions,” says Howell. According to Howell, it’s okay if your dreams don’t align with one another as long as you “honor and encourage each other to achieve your goals.”

6. You and Your Partner Hold Separate Interests
“Couples who have the greatest love affairs are the ones who are able to maintain their interests, but don’t put guilt on their partner for not sharing it with them,” she says. Meaning, both of you encourage the other to explore what they love on their own. Howell agrees, adding that while it’s easy to adopt your partner’s habits and interests, over time becoming over-reliant on each other can breed resentment. “Developing and investing in yourself builds self-confidence, self-love, and joy,” she says.

7. You’re Comfortable in Your Own Skin
When you’re in a relationship, it’s crucial to know your strengths and weaknesses, says Howell. Maybe you’re confident around your friends but self-conscious at work. Or you know that little things, like your partner forgetting to take out the trash, can set you off. Whatever your strengths and weaknesses are, being aware of them can help you reach a point of loving and accepting yourself, which in turn can help you love and accept your partner.

8. Boundaries Are Honored and Respected
A healthy relationship means you’re both on the same team. “In a healthy relationship, both parties discuss and agree upon important subjects that are meaningful to one another,” says Howell. She gives the example of budgeting for something big, like a vacation. An unsupportive partner in an unhealthy relationship doesn’t honor that goal, and they may sabotage it by trying to get you to splurge on something unnecessary. If you can talk it out with your partner and they acknowledge and understand your boundaries, that’s a good sign, notes Howell. “However, if your partner repeatedly ignores what you value, including your boundaries, that’s concerning,” she says.

9. You Feel Happy and Supported
Once the initial elation of a new relationship wears off, check in with yourself: Do you feel happy and supported by your partner? How are your mood and self-esteem? If you feel any strain or lack of support, talk to your significant other — it’s the healthy thing to do.

Feeling unhappy in a relationship can lead to health problems down the road. According to a study from 2015, which looked at nearly 5,000 adults over age 50 who were partnered up, having regular negative interactions in a relationship increases the likelihood of suffering from depression and anxiety, and is even linked to suicidal thoughts, likely because relationship dysfunction drives up day-to-day stress. On the other hand, strong partnerships protect people when they’re in the midst of a crisis — exactly the time they need someone on their side.

Gunmen kill at least 46 people in attack on rural village in Nigeria

Forty-six bodies have been found after gunmen attacked a rural village in central northern Nigeria, local government officials said, the latest in a series of deadly assaults in the region.

The attack happened on Wednesday in Umogidi in Benue state, where tit-for-tat clashes are common between nomadic herders and settled farmers competing for land and resources.

“The 46 casualties were from the bodies of victims found and retrieved. Many people are still missing, so the number of those killed may be higher,” Paul Hemba, security adviser to the Benue state governor, told AFP.

He blamed herdsmen, who he said had been attacking local communities over the past month. “Soldiers have been dispatched to the area, so the situation is a bit calm now,” he added.

The motive for the attack was not clear but Benue has been one of the hardest hit by clashes between farmers and Fulani herders they accuse of destroying farmland with their cattle grazing.

Baba Usman Ngelzarma, chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, a union of Fulani herders, warned against blaming herders without investigation. “There is a deliberate campaign of demonisation of Fulani herders, which started in Benue and spread to other parts of Nigeria,” he said.

“We are not exonerating Fulani herders from involvement in some of the attacks, but the way they are always blamed for every attack is unfair and prejudiced.” He called for an investigation to find the real perpetrators.

Bala Ejeh, the local government chairman in the town of Otukpo, said the gunmen attacked on Wednesday afternoon when people were mourning three others killed a day earlier. He also said 46 bodies had been recovered so far, including that of his own son and two relatives.

Communal violence is just one of the security challenges facing president-elect Bola Tinubu, who won a February presidential ballot that was marked by delays and accusations of vote-rigging.

Security forces are also battling a 14-year-long jihadist conflict and attacks by separatists.

Intercommunal violence has spiralled into broader criminality in the north-west and centre of the country, where heavily armed bandit militias ransack villages and carry out mass abductions for ransom.

Forty-six bodies have been found after gunmen attacked a rural village in central northern Nigeria, local government officials said, the latest in a series of deadly assaults in the region.

19:26 5 Ways Your Mood Can Affect Your Skin
5 Ways Your Mood Can Affect Your Skin

Being stressed out can have a major impact on your health — and that extends to your skin health, too. Stress can lead to breakouts and exacerbate conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, experts say, and that’s just one example of how what you’re feeling on the inside can show up on the outside.

“Your mood can absolutely affect your skin, and your skin can affect your mood,” says the board-certified dermatologist Doris Day, MD, who practices in New York City.

In addition, the act of caring for your skin can itself confer mood benefits. A solid skin-care routine can help you develop mindfulness, improve your mood, and show yourself some kindness — sometimes exactly when you need it most.

Your mood and emotions can also have a major impact on the health of your skin. Here are five ways your psyche might show up on your skin's surface.

1. Stress Can Make It Harder to Control Eczema, Rosacea, and Other Skin Conditions
When you feel tense, your body releases a hormone called cortisol, which triggers a fight-or-flight response. Per the Cleveland Clinic, cortisol isn’t all bad — it can give us energy during the day, for example — but it’s also associated with a range of unpleasant side effects.

Skin-wise, that includes poor wound healing and worsening inflammatory skin conditions, says Joshua Zeichner, MD, the director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

“We know that stress has a negative impact on the skin,” Dr. Zeichner says. “The brain increases production of a hormone called CRH. The hormone tells our adrenal glands to produce extra cortisol to prepare our bodies for flight or fight.”

As past research notes, CRH stands for corticotropin-releasing hormone. Zeichner says CRH binds to our oil glands, increasing oil production, and the extra oil can contribute to skin breakouts.

One small study, for example, found that increased acne severity was significantly associated with higher stress levels. Another study, published in 2017 in Clinical, Cosmetic, and Investigational Dermatology, found that among female medical students in their twenties, higher levels of stress were also correlated with acne severity.

Eczema (which is sometimes called atopic dermatitis) can cause symptoms such as dry, itchy, and sensitive skin, per the  National Eczema Association (NEA). The NEA says anxiety and stress commonly cause eczema flare-ups (which, the organization points out, can then lead to even more anxiety and stress).

What’s happening exactly? Our body’s physiological stress response floods us with the hormones adrenaline and cortisol, which can ultimately cause inflammation and suppress the immune system, NEA explains.

Stress is part of everyday life and unavoidable, of course. So, it’s worth noting that the goal isn’t to eliminate all stress, but to learn how to manage it in productive ways so it doesn’t spiral out of control.

Another common skin condition, rosacea — which is characterized by facial redness and inflammatory lesions — can also flare up because of stress, notes the Cleveland Clinic. Certain peptides that the nervous system releases in response to stress may cause inflammation and dilate blood vessels, prompting blushing and flushing, according to the National Rosacea Society (NRS). An earlier survey from the NRS indicated that two-thirds of those questioned said that stress management (changing your response to stress in your life), helped reduce symptom flares.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), other skin-related issues can be exacerbated by stress, such as psoriasis, itchiness, and hives. Here’s why.

Because stress has an impact on the immune system, it’s a known trigger for psoriasis, which is an autoimmune condition (in which an overactive immune system causes the body to mistakenly attack its own tissue).
Stress, anxiety, and itch share common pathways in the nervous system, and one can lead to the other, as research in the April 2018 Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reivews found.
When stress puts your body into a state of fight-or-flight, histamines are released, and some people find they get hives as a result, explains the American Institute of Stress.
Debra Jaliman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City and the author of Skin Rules, recommends her patients try to manage their stress to prevent it from manifesting on their skin. Some of her favorite suggestions: calming music, a warm bath, or a massage.

2. Anxiety Can Trigger Skin-Picking
Some people pick at their skin to cope with feelings of anxiety. Chronic skin-picking is a body-focused repetitive behavior related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, according to Mental Health America.

This is a mental illness caused by genetics and changes in brain structure related to habit formation, as well as stress and anxiety, per MHA. “Don’t judge yourself or be hard on yourself if you have [this],” says Dr. Day. Treatment includes a combination of antidepressant medication, such as an SSRI, as well as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).

Anna Chacon, MD, a Miami-based board-certified dermatologist and writer with MyPsoriasisTeam, says she commonly sees patients who are anxious engaging in behaviors like pulling their hair or picking their skin. Another example, she says, is acne excoriée, which is “observed in individuals who frequently pick at their acne bumps.”

Research has found that stress and anxiety worsen acne excoriée — and “unfortunately, sometimes it can leave scarring,” Dr. Chacon says. In addition to scarring, skin picking can create wounds or open up old ones, which can lead to infection, and it can create a cycle of shame and embarrassment, notes Cleveland Clinic.

Healthy habits, such as exercise and mindfulness, can help someone manage anxiety, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

Occasional anxiety is completely normal. But if it lingers and worsens and begins to interfere with your daily functioning, it’s a good idea to seek help, according to NIMH. When it comes to skin-picking disorders, it can be difficult to find an expert who is familiar with the condition. The platform SkinPick has a state-by-state directory of treatment providers, as well as self-help resources, which is a great place to start.

3. Depression Is Associated With Unhealthy Skin-Care Habits
Daily habits such as a healthy diet and plenty of sleep promote healthy skin, per the Mayo Clinic. But people with depression may have trouble eating healthfully or getting sufficient sleep, say the Mayo Clinic and the Sleep Foundation.

“When you're unhappy, you may not sleep well,” Day says. “You may not eat as healthy as you normally do. You may not drink enough water. You may not take deep breaths — you take more shallow breaths, and that's oxygen that you're not getting.” All these things can affect the health of your body, which can be reflected on your skin — your body’s largest organ.

Chacon adds that people who have depression may not tend to their self-care habits, such as their skin-care routines. Depression is a serious mental illness, one facet of which may be a lower desire for self-care measures that keep your skin and body healthy.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of depression, treatment can improve your mood, help you regain your interest in activities you enjoy, and improve your sleep, energy, and cognition, among so many other benefits. Once these aspects of life have improved, you may feel more motivated to do self-care routines, including exercise, healthy eating, and good skincare.

If you think you or a loved one has depression, seek treatment from a mental health professional.

4. Frowning Causes Wrinkles
Don’t take this as a suggestion not to express yourself, but know that showing anger with a frown can take a toll on your skin. “Constant frowning creates wrinkles that are etched into the forehead,” Chacon says.

As the Cleveland Clinic notes, the small muscle contractions that occur when you frown or squint cause lines to develop on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the corners of the eyes. Over time, these lines become more prominent and can lead to wrinkles.

Day recommends teaching yourself to make a habit of smiling or consciously entering a relaxed facial state. “Then you’ll sort of stimulate the emotions that will help your skin look and age better,” she says.

One of Day’s favorite tricks is to encourage her patients to lift their ears back. Even if they can’t bring themselves to smile, she says, that motion utilizes muscles that are positive and associated with smiling.

5. Good Feelings Buffer the Negative Effects of Stress on Skin
More and more dermatologists have begun to recognize the connection between mental health and skin health over the past couple of decades, according to the APA. Think about how simply feeling embarrassed or self-conscious can make you blush.

Research suggests that stress is one of the significant drivers of this connection, and why poor or low mental health can cause problems that show up on the skin (as described above).

So it would make sense that the opposite — a calm or positive mental state — would thwart these ill effects of stress on skin.

Maybe it’s thanks to increased levels of certain hormones associated with positive mood states, such as dopamine and serotonin, Zeichner says. These hormones regulate mood and keep you calm, stable, and happy, according to Zeichner and the Cleveland Clinic.

There’s not a lot of specific evidence, however, to say why positive mood boosts skin health, beyond the fact that stress (the opposite of positive mood) has negative effects on skin.

“While we need long-term studies to evaluate whether happy people age better than those who are angry or stressed, I certainly encourage my patients to do what they can to relax and be in a good mood,” Zeichner says.

23:15 Why is Tunisia in crisis and why do sub-Saharan people want to leave?
Why is Tunisia in crisis and why do sub-Saharan people want to leave?

The president, Kais Saied, is using refugees and opposition figures as scapegoats to distract from a struggling economy and his rolling power grab

What is happening in Tunisia?
Tunisia is in the grip of several overlapping crises. Its economy is struggling and its increasingly authoritarian president, Kais Saied, who has consolidated power since a constitutional coup in 2018, has launched a wide-ranging crackdown on his political opponents and undocumented people from other parts of Africa.

The situation has become so bad that US legislators this week wrote to the secretary of state, Antony Blinken, demanding that he “ensure that any US foreign assistance to Tunisia supports the restoration of inclusive, democratic governance and rule of law”.

A wave of racist violence unleashed by Saied after a speech in which he said migration posed a threat to the state has led to a sharp rise in attempts to cross the Mediterranean to Italy – a route described by the UN as the deadliest sea-crossing for refugees globally.

What kind of numbers are we talking about?
According to UN figures 12,000 people have reached Italy so far this year having set sail from Tunisia, compared with 1,300 in the same period of 2022. Fatalities from shipwrecks have also risen sharply, with dozens of deaths at sea in recent weeks.

How does this fit into Tunisia’s other problems?
Saied has used the migration issue as a scapegoat to distract attention from his creeping authoritarianism and the country’s economic problems.

Living standards have dropped because of rising prices, and low wages, and the youth unemployment rate, which began to fall from a peak of above 40% in 2021, is rising again.

Italy wants the IMF to unblock a $1.9bn loan, fearful that without the cash, the country will be destabilised.

Emigration by Tunisians has been steadily increasing in recent years as the economic situation has worsened.

Since coming to power in 2019 Saied has temporarily ruled by decree, stripped parliament of its powers, and, more recently, ordered a chilling roundup of political opponents.

In February he claimed in a xenophobic speech that undocumented immigration from sub-Saharan African countries was aimed at changing Tunisia’s demographic composition and was contributing to poverty and economic issues. “The undeclared goal of the successive waves of illegal immigration is to consider Tunisia a purely African country that has no affiliation to the Arab and Islamic nations,” he said.

Saied’s remarks were condemned as racist by human rights activists, including Romdhane Ben Amor, of the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, who described the speech as aimed at “creating an imaginary enemy for Tunisians to distract them from their basic problems”.

Summing up Saied’s approach, Tarek Megerisi, a north Africa analyst at the European Council on Foreign Relations, described the president as “avoiding economic reform [while] clinging instead to conspiracy theories that blame his critics and speculators for all problems”.

“In a desperate deflection tactic, he has embraced a Tunisian version of the rightwing ‘great replacement theory’, prompting a racist crackdown on black Africans living in and migrating through the country.”

The president’s speech was also seen as undermining Tunisia’s minority black population, which makes up between 10 and 15% of the country’s citizens, and has been blamed for a rise in hate speech and racist violence.

Are Saied’s remarks driving the increased numbers on the sea crossings?
It’s more complicated than that. The mild weather since the beginning of the year may have attracted more people to attempt the crossing, while some people appear to be choosing to cross from Tunisia rather than Libya, which has been supplied by Italy with funds and equipment to intercept people leaving by sea.

What does this say about the country’s politics?
Saied’s language and behaviour has become ever harsher and his anti-migration comments are of a piece with his attacks on Tunisian opposition figures.

Earlier this year his regime imprisoned two prominent politicians and a high-profile businessman, who were targeted in the midst of a crackdown on opposition politicians, activists, protest organisers and judges.

Saied has called opponents traitors, terrorists and criminals – and like migrants – tried to blame them for the country’s poor economic situation that has persisted since the 2011 revolution that triggered the Arab spring.

Although Tunisia was seen as the biggest success story of the Arab spring, since Saied – a constitutional lawyer – came to power in 2019 the country’s democratic progress has been in reverse. Voter turnout, already in decline since 2011, has gone further downhill under his watch.

In 2021 Saied dismissed the parliament and prime minister, ruling by decree until he was able to institute a new constitution formalising his powers.

While Saied’s rolling power-grab has drawn international criticism, some countries – including Italy – have soft-pedalled their response to Saied’s increasing authoritarianism, apparently preferring a strongman in Tunis who will be tough on the maritime people-smuggling routes.

Water ban in drought-stricken Tunisia adds to growing crisis

Tunisia has introduced water rationing as the country suffers its fourth year of severe drought.

The state water distribution company, Sonede, has already begun cutting mains water supplies every night between 9pm and 4am. The agriculture ministry has now banned the use of water for irrigation, watering green spaces and other public areas, and for washing cars.

“I’ve been experiencing water cuts overnight for the last two or three weeks,” said Haythem Hazel, an English teacher in the capital, Tunis. “It’s alarming. It shows we really have a water crisis in Tunisia. It’s difficult to stay without water for even two hours.”.

Reservoirs across the country are said to be about 30% short of capacity. Levels at the Sidi Salem reservoir, which serves the north of the country, including Tunis, are only about 16% full.

Tunisia has always relied heavily on capturing surface water for its supplies, leaving it especially vulnerable to shortages of rainfall driven by the climate crisis. In the past four years, the Mediterranean region has had blistering summers, mild winters and relatively little rain.

It is estimated that temperatures across Tunisia will increase by up to 3.8C (6.8F) by 2050, while rainfall will decrease by at least 4% over the same period.

A network of ageing pipes is making the problem worse. According to project workers from the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Tunis, leaks account for the loss of about 30% of the country’s water before it reaches a tap.

“Much of the infrastructure is very old, dating back to the 1950s,” said Imen Rais, WWF’s freshwater programme manager, “and it hasn’t really been maintained since the [2011] revolution.”

Poor enforcement of planning regulations since the revolution has also affected both availability of water and quality. Unsanctioned housing and lack of infrastructure in poorer districts has led to the siphoning of groundwater through illegally dug wells and wastewater flowing directly into the water supply.

“This is as bad as we’ve seen,” said Jamel Jrijer, director for WWF North Africa. “This was predicted as far back as the 1970s but we’ve never really seen any action. Matters deteriorated after the revolution, where successive governments promised everything but did nothing.”

While water shortages will directly affect householders, the water ban for farmers, who account for about 75% of Tunisia’s water consumption, will be especially significant.

The drought will prove “disastrous”, a farmers union official, Mohamed Rjaibia, told Reuters last week, when rationing was announced. This year’s grain crop is already predicted to be only a third of last year’s, at 200,000-250,000 tonnes compared with 750,000 tonnes in 2022. The agriculture sector contributes about 10% of the country’s annual GDP.

The government is considering digging wells, desalinating seawater and recycling wastewater, but there is little chance of escaping the worst of the crisis before the summer.

Tunisia is already reeling from a weak economy, high unemployment and rising living costs, and there are fears the water cuts could further stoke social unrest. In February, demonstrators took to the streets after President Kais Saied accused undocumented migrants of a plot to dilute Tunisia’s Arab identity. The comments were widely viewed as an attempt by Saied to distract attention from the country’s economic woes.

The government is still negotiating a bailout plan with the International Monetary Fund, which is understood to include curtailing the country’s entrenched subsidy system, which manages the prices of household staples, such as coffee, bread and grains.
