Friday February 24  will be the year of the Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine. The previous months  were characterized by a steady increase in tension. The invasion drove up the prices of fuel, fertilizers, grain and other essential commodities, of which Russia and Ukraine were the main suppliers. This, in turn, caused  imports to soar in countries like India that depended on  foreign fuels to boost their economies. As a result, inflation has risen 
times, often at unprecedented levels in recent years.
 
Since the end of last year, the prices for fuel  and  other goods, which had risen sharply after the war, have fallen. However, the effects of the crisis on the Indian economy are far from over. For example, the consumer price index rose at its fastest pace in three months (6.5% yoy) in January, shattering initial hopes that falling global fuel prices would lead to a fall supported by domestic inflation. This in turn will affect how the Reserve  Bank of India (RBI) decides on the future path of  rate hikes in

When oil prices spike, the trade balance almost inevitably deteriorates, given the limited room to substitute crude with other forms of fuel in a primarily fossil fuel economy. But despite Russian crude being offered below global market prices, the trade balance did worsen. The overall trade deficit in goods and services between April and December 2022—the peak months of the crisis—more than doubled to $118 billion, from $57 billion for the same period in 2021.

What of the future? As the war shows little sign of resolution, the West has actually ratcheted up attempts to economically isolate Russia. In December, for instance, the European Union banned seaborne imports of Russian crude and the G7 countries imposed a price cap on Russian crude imports.

This implies that Russia will be more eager than ever to sell its crude elsewhere, and its share of Indian crude supplies could increase even further. Indeed, while the effective price at which India imports crude still closely tracks the international price (Chart 2), in January, when Russian crude imports of India soared to their highest level ever, the Indian price of crude decoupled from the global price to a sharp extent. If this trend continues, the changing pattern of India’s fuel imports could well have a far bigger impact on the overall domestic inflation rate (and the trade deficit) in the longer term than most other direct attempts to tinker with either of these two indicators.

The Inflationary Aftermath

If Russia does become the mainstay of India’s fuel imports, with resulting moderating effects on the pace of inflation, it could have far-reaching effects on the economy, though the jury is still very much out on this. Upticks in fuel prices have always had a highly predictable effect on the Indian economy—on both growth and inflation.

Initial rises in global fuel prices lead to a direct impact on the consumer price index, as they account for close to 7% of the total index. While this may seem a low weightage, it is the steep jumps in the absolute price of crude and other imports of a similar type—gas, refined petroleum products, etc—that can cause a disproportionate effect on inflation. But the direct effects are only part of the picture.

The problem with any of the main fossil fuels is that they are a critical input into a range of industries. Thus, a sustained fuel price rise inevitably leads to other sectors and industries raising prices of their products. What started as a localized price rise can soon become generalized across industries, and across manufacturing and services. Thus, while there is an initial bump in so-called ‘headline’ inflation, it can soon cause ‘core’ inflation—inflation excluding highly volatile prices of commodities like food and fuel—to rise as well.

This is exactly what happened, according to a study of the inflation episode of the last year, done by Michael Patra, Asish Thomas George, G V Nadhanael and Joice John at the RBI. They write: “What started as a shock to food and fuel prices got increasingly generalized over ensuing months. This was reflected in highly elevated and sticky core inflation. Unprecedented input cost pressures got translated to…goods prices, in spite of muted demand conditions and pricing power. As the direct effects of the conflict waned and international commodity prices softened, the strengthening domestic recovery and rising demand enabled pass-through of pent-up input costs, especially in services, adding persistence to elevated inflationary pressures."

As the authors point out, the difference between the inflationary episode after the war, and recent ones before it, lie in the fact that in earlier episodes, the bulk of inflation came from volatile components like food and fuel, which are prone to wild swings in prices. In the later months of the war, though, the inflation had spread to most categories of goods and services. In fact, those secondary effects are what we see now, with headline inflation still rising, despite fuel prices weakening in recent months.

The problem didn’t lie just with crude oil. Russia is a key exporter of fertilizer as well, and the war seriously disrupted the global fertilizer trade. By April, the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s index of prices of key fertilizers had risen by over 16% compared with just two months earlier. This came on the back of major increases in the global price of fertilizers during the covid-19 crisis, caused by trade disruptions. Between April 2020 and early-2022, the IMF fertilizer price index had already risen by well over three times.

But it wasn’t just the price of fertilizer on the world market. Natural gas is a key ‘feedstock’, or input, into the domestic fertilizer industry. When Russia cut off gas supplies to Europe through the Nord Stream pipeline, it set off a mad scramble for other sources of natural gas, leading to a global spike in prices.

This further worsened supply conditions in the international and domestic fertilizer markets, and caused the fertilizer subsidy bill to rise by close to 50% in 2022-23, compared with a year earlier. As in crude oil, India imports a substantial volume of its natural gas requirements, and the global price increases lead to price hikes for Indian natural gas customers, such as those using piped gas for cooking or as fuel in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.v

This implies that Russia will be more eager than ever to sell its crude elsewhere, and its share of Indian crude supplies could increase even further. Indeed, while the effective price at which India imports crude still closely tracks the international price (Chart 2), in January, when Russian crude imports of India soared to their highest level ever, the Indian price of crude decoupled from the global price to a sharp extent. If this trend continues, the changing pattern of India’s fuel imports could well have a far bigger impact on the overall domestic inflation rate (and the trade deficit) in the longer term than most other direct attempts to tinker with either of these two indicators.

The Inflationary Aftermath

If Russia does become the mainstay of India’s fuel imports, with resulting moderating effects on the pace of inflation, it could have far-reaching effects on the economy, though the jury is still very much out on this. Upticks in fuel prices have always had a highly predictable effect on the Indian economy—on both growth and inflation.

Initial rises in global fuel prices lead to a direct impact on the consumer price index, as they account for close to 7% of the total index. While this may seem a low weightage, it is the steep jumps in the absolute price of crude and other imports of a similar type—gas, refined petroleum products, etc—that can cause a disproportionate effect on inflation. But the direct effects are only part of the picture.

The problem with any of the main fossil fuels is that they are a critical input into a range of industries. Thus, a sustained fuel price rise inevitably leads to other sectors and industries raising prices of their products. What started as a localized price rise can soon become generalized across industries, and across manufacturing and services. Thus, while there is an initial bump in so-called ‘headline’ inflation, it can soon cause ‘core’ inflation—inflation excluding highly volatile prices of commodities like food and fuel—to rise as well.

This is exactly what happened, according to a study of the inflation episode of the last year, done by Michael Patra, Asish Thomas George, G V Nadhanael and Joice John at the RBI. They write: “What started as a shock to food and fuel prices got increasingly generalized over ensuing months. This was reflected in highly elevated and sticky core inflation. Unprecedented input cost pressures got translated to…goods prices, in spite of muted demand conditions and pricing power. As the direct effects of the conflict waned and international commodity prices softened, the strengthening domestic recovery and rising demand enabled pass-through of pent-up input costs, especially in services, adding persistence to elevated inflationary pressures."

As the authors point out, the difference between the inflationary episode after the war, and recent ones before it, lie in the fact that in earlier episodes, the bulk of inflation came from volatile components like food and fuel, which are prone to wild swings in prices. In the later months of the war, though, the inflation had spread to most categories of goods and services. In fact, those secondary effects are what we see now, with headline inflation still rising, despite fuel prices weakening in recent months.

The problem didn’t lie just with crude oil. Russia is a key exporter of fertilizer as well, and the war seriously disrupted the global fertilizer trade. By April, the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s index of prices of key fertilizers had risen by over 16% compared with just two months earlier. This came on the back of major increases in the global price of fertilizers during the covid-19 crisis, caused by trade disruptions. Between April 2020 and early-2022, the IMF fertilizer price index had already risen by well over three times.

But it wasn’t just the price of fertilizer on the world market. Natural gas is a key ‘feedstock’, or input, into the domestic fertilizer industry. When Russia cut off gas supplies to Europe through the Nord Stream pipeline, it set off a mad scramble for other sources of natural gas, leading to a global spike in prices.

This further worsened supply conditions in the international and domestic fertilizer markets, and caused the fertilizer subsidy bill to rise by close to 50% in 2022-23, compared with a year earlier. As in crude oil, India imports a substantial volume of its natural gas requirements, and the global price increases lead to price hikes for Indian natural gas customers, such as those using piped gas for cooking or as fuel in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.v

“It was very quick. Either you run or you die,” she told the Associated Press. “It's not possible to take anything, only your life, which is the most important thing.”

Relief operations continued Monday in São Paulo state  as more than 500 workers searched for victims, cleared roads and tried to reconnect remote communities. 
 
However, this task was hampered by heavy rains, which  displaced hundreds of people and imprisoned an unknown number of tourists who came to the carnival. 
 
During a visit to the hard-hit coastal city of São Sebastião on Monday, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said the disaster underscored the need to halt house construction in areas prone to landslides and severe flooding. 
 
"Sometimes nature surprises us, but sometimes nature lures us," Lula said."I think it's important that none of that happens." 
 
São Paulo has declared a 180-day state of emergency in six cities after  experts called an unprecedented extreme weather event. 
 
The state government said 35 people were killed in São Sebastião and a seven-year-old girl died in nearby Ubatuba. 

Some of the  cities hardest hit by the emergency decree - including São Sebastião, Ubatuba, Ilhabela and Bertioga - canceled carnival activities as rescuers dug through the rubble and feared the death toll would rise.

Col Henguel Ricardo Pereira, the head of civil defence in São Paulo, said the area of Barra do Sahy in São Sebastião had been hit hardest. “Unfortunately, we are going to have a lot of deaths,” he told the Folha de São Paulo.

São Sebastião’s mayor, Felipe Augusto, said dozens of people were missing and 50 houses had collapsed in the city due to the landslides. “Our rescue teams are not managing to get to several locations; it’s a chaotic situation,” he added. “Many people are still under the rubble.”

The mayor shared several videos of widespread destruction in his city, including one that showed a baby being rescued by local people lined up on a flooded street.

A woman called Mailsa said she and her husband, daughter and grandson had barely escaped after a landslide destroyed her house in the Juquehy municipality of São Sebastião. The house was partially submerged, parts of it fell away and the rest was left precariously perched on the edge of a hill.

“It was very quick. Either you run or you die,” she told the Associated Press. “It’s not possible to take anything, only your life, which is the most important thing.”

São Paulo’s governor, Tarcísio de Freitas, met Lula on Monday to help coordinate the response to the disaster. He has requested support from the army, which has sent planes and rescue teams to the region.

“We have 36 missing persons in Barra do Sahy and we have information that there are four more missing persons in Juquehy,” Freitas told the TV Globo network on Monday. “We will update this number throughout the day. Teams have already gone to the region to carry out searches and we are reinforcing their number.”

Fake tans may be preferable to the real thing because they don’t involve harmful UV exposure, but that doesn’t mean they’re completely free of risk.

The proteins in the upper layers of your skin chemically interact with the sugars in a compound called DHA to produce a faux tan.

With summer long gone and winter already here, many of us are swapping our swimsuits for sweaters. While many welcome cooler temperatures and the festive activities that can come with it, our imminent pale complexions may not have the same appeal.

If you’re looking for ways to maintain your summer glow through the most frigid of days, you may be considering a faux tan. Before you get your bronze on, here’s what you need to know about spray tans and over-the-counter self-tanners, including how they work and their pros and cons.

How Do Spray Tans and Self-Tanners Work?
The main active ingredient in self-tanners that is responsible for producing the desired golden brown appearance is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)–approved compound called dihydroxyacetone (DHA), according to Mayo Clinic. Contrary to popular belief, DHA is not a stain or paint-like substance. Rather, it is actually a colorless sugar compound, says Patricia Malerich, MD, a Columbus, Ohio–based physician and a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Ohio State University.

The tan is the end result of a chemical reaction between the proteins in the upper layers of your skin and the sugars in DHA, Dr. Malerich says. The two components react, forming a rusty brown protein that is tightly bound to the top of your skin, which is why spray tans aren’t easily washed off, she adds.

That said, it isn’t uncommon to find your sheets discolored the day after applying either a self-tanner or getting a spray tan. Malerich says that this is because the products also use a temporary dye in their formulas, as an easy way to see where the product is being applied.

Normally, a fake tan lasts about a week, she says, because our top layer of skin is constantly being shed every 7 to 10 days. The brown-colored proteins formed on those top layers of skin are shed at the same time.

One perk: If you’re skipping real ultraviolet (UV) rays in favor of getting a fake tan, your skin health and appearance will benefit in the long run. Radiation from the sun, tanning beds, and even nail-drying lamps all contains UV rays, and UV rays are the biggest known contributor to the development of melanomas and other skin cancers, says Beth Buchbinder, MD, senior physician at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

The skin’s resiliency weakens over time with repeated sun damage, Dr. Buchbinder says. There are two types of UV rays: UVA rays, which accelerate skin aging (think fine lines and wrinkles), and UVB rays, which cause sunburns, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). The biggest health concern is that UVA and UVB rays can alter a cell’s DNA, and eventually the cell becomes extremely abnormal and cancerous.

“Part of a cancer developing is that it doesn’t follow the rules,” Buchbinder says. “It doesn’t just grow when it’s not supposed to; it doesn’t let normal cells regenerate. So, instead of healing, the cancer develops.”

Wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 can help protect your skin against the harmful effects of UVA and UVB rays, as the AAD notes, but limiting sun exposure is another key tactic for protecting your skin.

Another advantage of spray tans and self-tanners: If you are pregnant, a faux glow may be a better alternative to baking in the sun. The skin is usually more photosensitive during pregnancy, putting women at higher risk of burns, rashes, and irregular pigmentation, says John Smulian, MD, chair and professor at the University of Florida’s department of obstetrics and gynecology in Gainesville.

Natural tanning can cause overheating and dehydration, and overheating the body during the first trimester, specifically, has been linked to certain birth defects like spina bifida, he says. Dr. Smulian recommends limiting UV exposure during pregnancy.

DHA, on the other hand, which is also used in many other cosmetic products, is presumed to be safe during pregnancy because it primarily interacts at the level of the skin. That said, Smulian urges caution here as well: “As a matter of general principle, any products that contain chemicals and cover large surface areas of the skin should only be used if considered necessary during pregnancy,” he says. So, if you’re pregnant, be sure to check with your ob-gyn about whether faux tans are right for you.

The Cons of Getting a Fake Tan
Despite the many possible pros of faux tans, there are a few cons to take into consideration before hopping into a spray-tanning booth in particular.

While DHA is FDA approved as a safe topical application, your lung health may suffer if you inhale the aerosols from a spray tan, Malerich says.

DHA should never be “inhaled, ingested, or exposed to areas covered by mucous membranes, including the lips, nose, and areas in and around the eye (from the top of the cheek to above the eyebrow), because the risks, if any, are unknown,” according to FDA regulations. 

The aerosols in the products can further exacerbate issues for people with lung conditions such as asthma, Malerich says.

Pregnant women may want to consider avoiding spray tans and stick to self-tanners during pregnancy due to the greater risk of absorption from inhalation, Smulian says. Less is known about the impact if the products are inhaled, he adds.

Human research on the safety of fake-tanning methods is limited, but preliminary lab research on melanoma cells found that DHA exposure from topical sunless tanning products and aerosol inhalation appeared to be harmful to the cells. Specifically, DHA exposure was linked with oxidative stress, which is associated with chronic diseases such as cancer, and the creation of advanced glycation end products, or AGEs, which are associated with skin aging. But more rigorous research in humans is needed to confirm those results.

Another concern to be aware of is the added fragrance in fake-tanning products, which can offer a pleasant smell but irritate the skin, Malerich says. People with eczema in particular may be sensitive to fragrances. If you’re managing this skin condition, Malerich advises doing a skin patch test, where you apply a small amount of the product to one area of your skin, such as behind your ear, and observe how your skin reacts.

Different brands also include additives that increase proteins on the skin to create a darker complexion, she says. Many people with thickened eczema or psoriasis patches often don’t like to use spray tans because the scaly skin texture caused by these skin conditions becomes darker when using fake tanners, creating a blotchy appearance, she says. The darkening additives and fragrances, not DHA itself, are the factors that can cause irritation and reactions to fake tans, Malerich says.

Also, many people are under the false impression that because a fake tan lends the skin a darker shade, it also gives the skin increased resistance to UV rays and prevents it from burning as fast or as much, Malerich says. But neither spray tans nor self-tanners offer protection against UV rays, unless the product label explicitly notes that it provides SPF.

Wearing self-tanning products in the sun may even accelerate skin aging, some research suggests. The authors wrote that with UV exposure, DHA and skin proteins interact and create free radicals, promoting oxidative damage. The authors observed a greater breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers in skin with DHA that was exposed to sunlight.

Are Fake Tans Actually Healthier Than Real Tans?
In the sense that fake tans don’t expose the skin to UV rays like the real sun does, yes, they are the healthier of these two tanning options, Malerich says.

Some people may be concerned about how much of the faux-tanning product is absorbed, she adds, but because it happens very quickly on the top layers of the skin, the ingredients have not been found to get absorbed into the body. For example, the FDA did a few studies checking participants’ blood and urine for DHA concentration after topical application, and it was not detected, Malerich says.

So, if a tan is what you desire, the faux route is recommended — though Buchbinder says that she believes we should all learn to love our skin at the color that it is. “While tanning is thought to be beautiful, if we can accept the different colors we all are, it would be such a great thing.”

If You Choose to Get a Fake Tan, Here’s How to Choose the Best Option for You
When deciding which shade is for you, ask yourself what the reason is that you are getting the tan, says Abby Reid, founder and general manager of the Sun Tan Van, a spray tan salon in Boston.

“If someone is traveling to a tropical location, I wouldn’t typically use the same shade I would for their wedding,” Reid says. “It’s best to start light and make them darker after if they aren’t sure.”

If you’re looking for ways to maintain your summer glow through the most frigid of days, you may be considering a faux tan. Before you get your bronze on, here’s what you need to know about spray tans and over-the-counter self-tanners, including how they work and their pros and cons.

How Do Spray Tans and Self-Tanners Work?
The main active ingredient in self-tanners that is responsible for producing the desired golden brown appearance is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)–approved compound called dihydroxyacetone (DHA), according to Mayo Clinic. Contrary to popular belief, DHA is not a stain or paint-like substance. The Gunners have picked up just one point in their last two matches with Mikel Arteta’s side clinging on to top spot ahead of their meeting with Manchester City on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola’s side – who currently sit second – have the opportunity to leapfrog Mikel Arteta’s men on Wednesday if they win at the Emirates Stadium – but Arsenal do have the advantage of a game in hand whatever happens.

MUMBAI : The Reserve Bank of India and Yes Bank Ltd filed separate appeals in the Supreme Court on Monday to challenge the Bombay High Court’s ruling on 20 January that overturned the private lender’s decision to write off ₹8,415 crore worth of additional tier-1 (AT-1) bonds as part of a restructuring plan.

In its petition before the apex court, RBI said that the Basel-III Master Circular mandates that such AT-1 bonds must be written off before public funds are injected into the reconstructed bank (Yes Bank). By setting aside the master circular and reviving the AT-1 Bonds, this order will adversely impact the rest of Yes Bank’s reconstruction scheme besides diluting the equity infused by State Bank of India, RBI said.

The central bank argued in its challenge that “... the impugned order will be prejudicial to the interests of over 2 lakh public depositors for whose benefit the entire exercise of reconstruction has been undertaken".

It said that the high court order was an interference in the economic policy of the RBI and noted that the legal position that courts should refrain from interfering in decisions about economic policy and legislation has been already established by the top court.

“It is not the function of the courts to sit in judgment over matters of economic policy and it must necessarily be left to the expert bodies. The setting aside of the central bank’s letter was in contravention of the law already settled by the top court," the petition said.

Moreover, the bank petitioned that Yes Bank would have never been revived unless SBI agreed to invest public sector money into the private bank.

A copy of RBI’s petition was seen by Mint. RBI, along with Yes Bank, filed their appeals on Saturday. Mint couldn’t access Yes Bank’s petition. Calls and messages to a spokesperson for Yes Bank remained unanswered.

Mint first reported on 22 January that RBI was likely to appeal the high court ruling that quashed the regulator’s and Yes Bank’s decision to write-off the AT1 bonds. AT-1 bonds are unsecured or perpetual bonds with no maturity date and is used by banks to increase their equity base and comply with Basel –III norms.

As part of Yes Bank’s restructuring scheme in March 2020, RBI along with the Yes Bank administrator decided to write-off the AT1 bonds. Consequently, aggrieved by the decision, a batch of petitions were filed by the bondholders, including financial institutions and retail investors.

A key factor in SBI’s decision to infuse equity are the provisions of the master circular, as per which the loss absorbent AT1 bonds were to be written off before fresh equity infusion so that there would be no dilution of SBI’s capital, RBI said, adding that the master circular’s instructions that the bonds would be written off before further infusion of equity in order to prevent dilution of SBI’s funds had a crucial role in the state-run lender’s decision to restructure Yes Bank.

In March 2020, the Yes Bank board was superseded by RBI, and Prashant Kumar was appointed as the administrator. RBI had said the decision was taken mainly due to the bank’s poor financial situation, which was mostly caused by its failure to obtain new capital.

A petition was filed by the Yes Bank AT1 Bond Holders Association for their claims worth ₹160 crore. It filed a writ petition challenging the legality and validity of RBI’s decision to write off AT-1 bonds sold by Yes Bank to ineligible investors. In its petition before the high court, the association had said “our members are individual retail investors most of whom are above 60 years of age, who have been wrongfully lured to invest in AT1 bonds issued by Yes Bank which were meant for allotment only to institutional investors and corporate bodies for which they were ineligible."

The American musician and fashion entrepreneur Pharrell Williams has been named the creative director of Louis Vuitton menswear.

The role was previously held by Virgil Abloh who died in November 2021.

It marks only the second time a Black American designer has held a head position at the French luxury house. Abloh made history as the first when he was appointed in March 2018.

A longtime supporter, and friend of Abloh, Williams’ appointment puts an end to months of speculation about who next would take on the highly coveted role.

Emerging talent such as the Jamaican-British designers Martine Rose and Grace Wales Bonner were previously said to be under discussion, so for many insiders the announcement of Williams was somewhat unexpected.

However, his appointment is a reflection of the continued intersection of the luxury and streetwear sectors and hints at the direction LVMH wants to take the brand.

Abloh, who was hailed as a fashion maverick, was widely praised for widening Louis Vuitton’s appeal. He rebooted the idea of luxury, marrying it with the worlds of hip-hop and hype culture, and in doing so attracting a more diverse and younger consumer.

In a statement from Louis Vuitton to announce the appointment of Williams, the rapper was described as a “visionary whose creative universes expand from music to art, and to fashion. The way in which he breaks boundaries across the various worlds he explores aligns with Louis Vuitton’s status as a cultural maison, reinforcing its values of innovation, pioneer spirit and entrepreneurship”.

His first collection will be revealed in June 2024 during men’s fashion week in Paris.

Williams first came to prominence in the 1990s as part of the Neptunes, a songwriting and hip-hop production duo he formed with Chad Hugo. They worked with artists including Gwen Stefani and Snoop Dogg.

Regarded as one of most influential music producers of the 21st century, Williams holds 13 Grammy awards and in 2014 his song Happy was nominated for an Academy Award.

A prolific entrepreneur, he regularly sits on the front row at fashion weeks and co-owns the streetwear label Human Made with Kenzo’s creative director Nigo. He also oversees his own labels Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream.

Williams has a longstanding partnership with Adidas Originals and recently launched a skincare line Humanrace.

In 2019, he designed a collection for Chanel, while in January 2022 he unveiled a design collection with Tiffany, the renowned jewellery brand acquired by the LVMH group in 2021.

He has also previously collaborated with Louis Vuitton. A line of sunglasses he created for the brand in 2008 were re-issued by Abloh in 2018.

In a statement posted on Louis Vuitton’s Instagram, Pietro Beccari, Louis Vuitton’s chairman and CEO said: “I am glad to welcome Pharrell back home, after our collaborations in 2004 and 2008 for Louis Vuitton, as our new men’s creative director. His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter.”

The appointment of Williams is one of Beccari’s first significant moves since joining the house in January. He previously led Dior.

The LVMH group, which owns Louis Vuitton, enjoyed a record year in 2022, recording revenues of €79.2bn (£69.9bn) and profits of €21.1bn, both up 23%. It is now the biggest company on the European stock market. In December Bernard Arnault, the conglomerate’s chief executive, was named the world’s richest person, pushing Elon Musk off the top spot.

In a statement posted on Louis Vuitton’s Instagram, Pietro Beccari, Louis Vuitton’s chairman and CEO said: “I am glad to welcome Pharrell back home, after our collaborations in 2004 and 2008 for Louis Vuitton, as our new men’s creative director. His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter.”

The appointment of Williams is one of Beccari’s first significant moves since joining the house in January. He previously led Dior.

The LVMH group, which owns Louis Vuitton, enjoyed a record year in 2022, recording revenues of €79.2bn (£69.9bn) and profits of €21.1bn, both up 23%. It is now the biggest company on the European stock market. In December Bernard Arnault, the conglomerate’s chief executive, was named the world’s richest person, pushing Elon Musk off the top spot.

Musician and entrepreneur is second Black American designer to hold position at French luxury house after Virgil Abloh

The American musician and fashion entrepreneur Pharrell Williams has been named the creative director of Louis Vuitton menswear.

The role was previously held by Virgil Abloh who died in November 2021.

It marks only the second time a Black American designer has held a head position at the French luxury house. Abloh made history as the first when he was appointed in March 2018.

A longtime supporter, and friend of Abloh, Williams’ appointment puts an end to months of speculation about who next would take on the highly coveted role.

Emerging talent such as the Jamaican-British designers Martine Rose and Grace Wales Bonner were previously said to be under discussion, so for many insiders the announcement of Williams was somewhat unexpected.

However, his appointment is a reflection of the continued intersection of the luxury and streetwear sectors and hints at the direction LVMH wants to take the brand.

Abloh, who was hailed as a fashion maverick, was widely praised for widening Louis Vuitton’s appeal. He rebooted the idea of luxury, marrying it with the worlds of hip-hop and hype culture, and in doing so attracting a more diverse and younger consumer.

In a statement from Louis Vuitton to announce the appointment of Williams, the rapper was described as a “visionary whose creative universes expand from music to art, and to fashion. The way in which he breaks boundaries across the various worlds he explores aligns with Louis Vuitton’s status as a cultural maison, reinforcing its values of innovation, pioneer spirit and entrepreneurship”.

His first collection will be revealed in June 2024 during men’s fashion week in Paris.

Williams first came to prominence in the 1990s as part of the Neptunes, a songwriting and hip-hop production duo he formed with Chad Hugo. They worked with artists including Gwen Stefani and Snoop Dogg.

Regarded as one of most influential music producers of the 21st century, Williams holds 13 Grammy awards and in 2014 his song Happy was nominated for an Academy Award.

 Five-year-old Jinan is now in hospital with a serious leg injury; his brother was only scratched while the rest of their family died 
 
 Omar Rahal heard a voice under the rubble so faint  he was trying to figure out if it could only be in his head. The night before, two earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.6 magnitude had leveled his village of Harem in the rebel-controlled Syrian province of Idlib, destroying dozens of buildings, including the home of his cousin Mahmoud, his wife and  seven children. 
 
 A few hours later, Rahal, the local police chief, fell under the rubble of his home hoping that Mahmoud and his family were still alive.He had heard no sign of life all morning, but at 12:30 his ears picked up five words from what sounded like a little girl: "Take me out of here. 
 
 A few meters below the rubble, trapped between concrete, lay Mahmoud's five-year-old daughter Jinan and her nine-month-old brother Abdullah, who comforted them under the rubble. Beside them, under the rubble of their home, lay the body of their mother, Suaad, whose arm Rahal could  only see, which she appeared to be trying to encase her children to protect them. 
 
 Rahal tried to free her, but found he couldn't do it alone.He therefore decided to film the two detained children and send the images to his police officers, asking them to intervene. The video  quickly went from  phone to phone, left Syrian borders  and went viral, amassing around 5 million hours of views on Twitter alone and becoming a symbol of the tragedy in Idlib. 
 
 "My men came straight away and helped me get little Abdullah out, who fortunately only had  a few minor scratches," Rahal told the Guardian. “But the problem was Jinan. It was blocked by a concrete slab and had an iron bar driven through its leg.

 Relief efforts in Idlib,  largely cut off from the outside world for two days after the earthquake, were hampered by a lack of machinery and supplies as people were forced to dig up loved ones with their bare hands. 
 
 "To lift the concrete block blocking it, we used a jack that's used to lift cars when a tire needs to be changed," Rahal said. "It worked. But Jinan still had  that iron bar stuck in her leg. It had to be cut."
 
 Rescuers attempted to sever the shaft with a thick steel blade while Jinan cried out in pain. To complicate matters further, aftershocks shook the village again. What was left of the buildings began to crumble. 
 
 "Please!" Get me out of here,” Jinan begged the men.

There was no time to lose. "We had no choice," said Rahal. “We also risked the death and loss of a child. So we decided to do what we never wanted to do: pull Jinan out while his leg was still partially trapped in the pole.” 
 
 At around 2 a.m. Tuesday, after almost 10 p.m., the screamer was released.
 
 A week after the rescue,  Guardian visited Jinan and his younger brother at a hospital converted into a former school, where  injured harem children  were being treated. Abdullah slept wrapped in a woolen blanket while Jinan lay motionless on the bed in pain. 
 
 "The wound in his leg is very serious," Wajih al-Karrat, a doctor, told him. "Jinan may never walk the same path again. i won't lie to youIf the wound doesn't heal, we might have to amputate his leg. 
 
 After the video was released, some media falsely reported that Jinan's father was still alive. Unfortunately this is not the case. "Jinan and Abullah are the only survivors of the family," Rahal said with tears in his eyes. The two children were entrusted to their uncle and his wife.
 
 Jinan and his brother are among the countless children orphaned by the earthquake in Idlib. The death toll from the Syria earthquake  has risen to more than 3,580 as UN  officials push for better access to aid in the government-controlled northwest of the country. 
 
 "It's a tragedy," Karrat said calmly. "Jinan knows that she will be left alone with her brother, but these children here at Jinan's bedside are also orphans.And most are still wondering where their parents are and when they will pick them up. First, we want to treat them well. At some point we have to tell them that they, too, have been orphaned."

Kiernan Forbes, 35, won multiple South African awards, was nominated several times for a Black Entertainment Television award in the US and was once nominated for an MTV Europe music award.

“It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son,” his parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes, said in a statement posted on AKA’s Twitter account. “Our son was loved, and he gave love in return.”

Police said: “They were allegedly approached by two armed suspects who walked to them from across the street and shot the victims at close range.”

Forbes was booked to perform at a club on Friday night, according to the Durban city mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda.

Police said the motive of the shooting was unknown, and an investigation was under way.

This follows his biggest hits All Eyes on Me, Fela in Versace and Lemons (Lemonade) which have been streamed by millions on Spotify.
