Fulham are through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after a 2-0 victory against Premier League rivals Leeds United.

Both goals showcased individual skill, with Manor Solomon’s curled effort second only to a stunning strike from distance to break the deadlock from Joao Palhinha.

Leeds continued to show improvement since Javi Gracia’s appointment but were unable to book a place in the last eight for the first time in 20 years despite having a number of chances, including a slightly controversial disallowed goal.

Fulham, who have exceeded all expectations in the top flight this year, reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2009-10.

Georginio Rutter thought he had scored his first goal for Leeds when he tapped the ball home after Marek Rodak had palmed the ball into the path of the 20-year-old, but referee Chris Kavanagh ruled it out for a soft foul in the area and VAR did not intervene.

It was Fulham who took the lead after 21 minutes when Palhinha capitalised after intercepting an attempted pass. The Portugal international drove forward before expertly curling the ball into the top corner with a stunning finish for his first club goal since December.

Leeds came close again in the final moments of first-half stoppage time when Wilfried Gnonto’s looped ball into the box was headed goalwards by Rutter, but the ball dropped onto the inside of the post and Fulham were able to clear.

Rodak was called into action early in the second half, parrying behind a Gnonto shot after he was played in by Crysencio Summerville.

Leeds continued to test the goalkeeper and started the second half significantly more brightly than the hosts.

Just as the visitors had been piling on the pressure for an equaliser, it was Fulham who doubled their lead through the in-form Solomon.

The winger, on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk, curled in from the edge of the box after playing a one-two with Aleksandar Mitrovic to create the opening.

Solomon has impressed in recent weeks after a difficult season when he spent almost five months on the sidelines after sustaining a serious knee injury, with his recovery carefully managed by the club.

After going 2-0 up the hosts continued to push, with Mitrovic having a goal ruled out for offside, and despite a flurry of chances for Leeds in the final 10 minutes, Rodak remained equal to them.

If there’s one thing the hit fantasy horror HBO “Game of Thrones” has brought, it’s to catapult lesser-known actors like Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys, and Kit Harington, who starred as protagonist Jon Snow, into the spotlight.

The same can also be said for Jason Momoa, who was best known for his Khal Drogo role, but the actor himself sees the portrayal as both a boon and a bane.

Since the show that is based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling series of novels, “A Song of Ice and Fire,” premiered on the channel in April 2011, people can’t seem to get enough of “Game of Thrones,” and everyone has come to love the characters of the show, including the bad guys, of course.

The series has launched not just the careers of the thespians involved but it had also ignited creative minds to brew memes that have since gone viral. To cut it short, all, if not most, of us have an idea of what the hit show is about.

A Setback
So, avid fans would probably know one of the earliest characters that got killed, Khal Drogo, the leader of the very brutal Dothraki and Daenerys’ first love.

The unforgiving character died when his lover killed him out of mercy after entering a vegetative state, which was caused by Mirri Maz Duur.

Sadly, we only saw Momoa’s face through flashbacks and dreams. Meanwhile, starring in a bug series as “Game of Thrones” would only open a lot of doors for you, as anyone can imagine.

However, it’s not what happened with Momoa, who struggled hard after his stint in the show ended.

Needless to say, it didn’t launch his acting career and actually ended up setting it back for him — a large part of this was because people thought the Hawaiian native didn’t speak English because his character used an invented language for their group.

Broke After ‘GOT’
Specifically, Khal Drogo was killed in 2012 and by the next year, Jason, who has two kids with wife “The Cosby Show” cast Lisa Bonet, said he was broke.

Who would have thought that becoming a member of such a fan-fave show would be the reason for his struggle?

The 39-year-old further admitted that he played the part so well that it somewhat became a hindrance for future roles.

When you think of it, the opposite usually happens to most actors, who play their characters so convincingly that producers see their true potential.

Jason further exclaimed that no one’s going to hire Khal, who is known for his unforgiving ways, for a comedy, hinting that the nature of the role may have affected future works.

While appearing at “The Tonight Show,” the actor revealed that it was actually Fred Armisen who made him realized that it was because people thought he can’t speak English that he wasn’t getting casting calls.

Perhaps, people just didn’t see the magnificence of Khal Drogo and just focused on the tough shell he was clad with. That or people just didn’t know that Dothraki was just a language made for the show.

Fortunately, not all people think like that, including Zack Snyder who was a huge fan of “Game of Thrones.” The “Justice League” director phoned Jason and asked him to audition.

From Tough Guy to Hero
Jason narrated that he did an audition, but for a role he wasn’t expecting. What he thought was that he was playing Batman, which Ben Affleck got, so that left him with the villain character.

Zack explained that he wasn’t the antagonist of Batman and Superman, but was going to be Aquaman, which was a major turning point in his life.

By 2016, in the “Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice” DC fans were teased with Momoa’s new role and this was followed by the ensemble film “Justice League.”

Recently, his character got his stand-alone film “Aquaman” that swam past the $1-billion worldwide box-office hit. Thankfully, his career picked up just at the right time.

Canada has joined the US and EU in enacting a sweeping ban preventing TikTok from being installed on all government-issued mobile devices, as western officials take action over the Chinese-owned video-sharing app.

Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, did not rule out further action. “I suspect that as government takes the significant step of telling all federal employees that they can no longer use TikTok on their work phones, many Canadians from business to private individuals will reflect on the security of their own data and perhaps make choices,” he said.

“I’m always a fan of giving Canadians the information for them to make the right decisions for them.”

The EU’s executive branch said last week it had temporarily banned TikTok from phones used by employees as a cybersecurity measure. On Tuesday, the European parliament followed suit, banning staff from installing the app on any phone that had access to email or parliamentary networks.

Fortier said the chief information officer of Canada had determined it presented “an unacceptable level of risk to privacy and security … On a mobile device, TikTok’s data collection methods provide considerable access to the contents of the phone,” Fortier said.

“While the risks of using this application are clear, we have no evidence at this point that government information has been compromised.”

A TikTok spokesperson said in an email: “It’s curious that the government of Canada has moved to block TikTok on government-issued devices without citing any specific security concern or contacting us with questions only after similar bans were introduced in the EU and the US.”

According to experts, monarch butterflies take about four or five generations before they complete the journey. However, it certainly is not an easy feat for the long-lived clan to trace back their route.

That’s why only a certain population completes the travel, and according to research, the selective movement shows that the biggest ones tend to survive more than the smaller ones.

Emperor Penguins
There’s a breathtaking phenomenon that happens during March in Antarctica – the migration of Emperor penguins.

While it is spring in some parts of the world, the southernmost continent’s temperature by this time is dropping.

Unlike other animals that travel to a distant land to find warmer areas, the tallest among their kind journey more than a hundred miles across thick snow to reach their destination, one that’s the same every year although their path to the site is usually different.

These cute animals brave harsh weather conditions just to breed at their destination. Once there, the males will not eat just to take care of the eggs.

What’s amazing is that they learned to huddle, a social behavior that aims to keep themselves warm in a -60 degrees Celsius environment.

According to a research, huddling could create a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius inside. Meanwhile, the females would travel to the ocean for two months to hunt for food that they will feed to their young.

Men have long had only two  birth control options: condoms or sterilization. Now the first laboratory tests on mice suggest that  another option may be on the horizon. 
 
These preliminary laboratory tests suggest that it may one day be possible to give men  birth control pills to take  before sex if needed. This pill is so new  it doesn't have a name — it's simply called TDI-11861 — and it prevents sperm from traveling through the female reproductive system to fertilize an egg.
 
Male birth control pills on demand 
In early laboratory experiments, a single dose of TDI-11861 immobilized mouse sperm for  two and a half hours, according to results published in Nature Communications. Some sperm started moving again after three hours, and almost all sperm regained motility after 24 hours. 
 
No pregnancy occurred when male mice were given this drug prior to mating with females. In contrast, male mice that did not receive the drug fertilized female mice about a third of the time.  This suggests that men will one day be able to take  birth control pills as needed before sex to prevent pregnancy, say the study's lead authors, Dr. Jochen Buck and Dr. Lonny Levin, Professor of Pharmacology at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York.
 
"Men only use contraception when and as often as they need it," said Dr. Buck and Levin emailed together. 
 
Good timing will be the key to the future male "pill" 

But there is one big caveat: Men must use it properly. 
 
"We anticipate that the final drug we develop will be active within 30 minutes of ingestion and - in a sterile male - remain active  for 12 to 18 hours," said Buck and Levin. “The man has to watch his watch to make sure he doesn't go beyond the active window.

The experimental drug belongs to a new family of medicines that are designed to block a protein known as soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC), which plays a key role in helping sperm mature and move. So far, TDI-11861 appears to be a fast-acting sAC inhibitor that works with a single dose and wears off afterwards. This means that men wouldn’t be infertile for very long — only long enough to prevent pregnancy in the hours immediately after use.

Normally, sperms start swimming vigorously through the vagina after ejaculation so they can move up through the cervix and into the uterus, Buck and Levin noted. Once in the uterus, sperm can survive for several days, making it possible for a pregnancy to occur several days after intercourse.

However, sperm  from a man who has taken an sAC inhibitor is immobile, which means it gets trapped in the vagina and never gets to the cervix," Buck and Levin said. 
 
When will there be contraceptives for men? 
They are planning further studies in mice before beginning human trials. Buck and Levin said they hope to begin human trials within two to three years. 
 
While this concept of immobilizing sperm to prevent pregnancy is intriguing, the question remains whether this investigational drug will remain active as long as sperm remain in the female reproductive system to ensure reliable contraception, says Stephanie Page, MD, PhD, a contraception researcher and professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle who was not involved in the new study.

When will there be contraceptives for men? 
They are planning further studies in mice before beginning human trials. Buck and Levin said they hope to begin human trials within two to three years.

One of the most striking changes in the economy, although usually masked by the more visible effects of inflation, is the changing patterns of fuel imports from India (see Chart 2). After the invasion, Russia was practically excluded from the world oil market and tried to attract buyers by offering discounts on supplies.

India went all in. As a result, the share of Russia as a source of Indian crude oil supplies jumped sharply from as low as 2% in late-2021, on the eve of the crisis, to well over a quarter a year later. Russia is now among the top three suppliers of crude to India, thus reducing the traditional reliance on the Middle-East. In January, the proportion of crude imports sourced by India from Russia soared to a high of 27%.

When oil prices spike, the trade balance almost inevitably deteriorates, given the limited room to substitute crude with other forms of fuel in a primarily fossil fuel economy. But despite Russian crude being offered below global market prices, the trade balance did worsen. The overall trade deficit in goods and services between April and December 2022—the peak months of the crisis—more than doubled to $118 billion, from $57 billion for the same period in 2021.

What of the future? As the war shows little sign of resolution, the West has actually ratcheted up attempts to economically isolate Russia. In December, for instance, the European Union banned seaborne imports of Russian crude and the G7 countries imposed a price cap on Russian crude imports.

Initial rises in global fuel prices lead to a direct impact on the consumer price index, as they account for close to 7% of the total index. While this may seem a low weightage, it is the steep jumps in the absolute price of crude and other imports of a similar type—gas, refined petroleum products, etc—that can cause a disproportionate effect on inflation. But the direct effects are only part of the picture.

The problem with any of the main fossil fuels is that they are a critical input into a range of industries. Thus, a sustained fuel price rise inevitably leads to other sectors and industries raising prices of their products. What started as a localized price rise can soon become generalized across industries, and across manufacturing and services. Thus, while there is an initial bump in so-called ‘headline’ inflation, it can soon cause ‘core’ inflation—inflation excluding highly volatile prices of commodities like food and fuel—to rise as well.
