Greece shipwreck up to 100 children were below deck survivors say

Survivors from an overcrowded fishing boat that capsized and sank on Wednesday off the Greek coast in one of the worst disasters in the Mediterranean in recent years have told doctors and police that women and children were travelling in the hold of the vessel.

Seventy-eight people have been confirmed dead, but there are fears the number of victims could run into the hundreds.

“Right now everything is guesswork but we are working on the assumption that as many as 500 are missing,” said Nicolaos Spanoudakis, a police inspector. “Women and children, it seems, were in the hold.”

Doctors at Kalamata general hospital told Greek media and the BBC that survivors said as many 100 children had been in the bottom of the ship.

It has not been possible to verify the figure, though asked by a reporter from Greece’s ANT1 channel if there were 100 children onboard, one survivor replied: “Yes.”

On Thursday night it was announced that Greek authorities had arrested nine suspected people-smugglers believed to have piloted the vessel before it sank off the southern Peloponnese.

Skai TV reported that the nine – all men – were of Egyptian descent and were suspected of masterminding the illegal voyage of hundreds of people to Italy from Egypt, from where they had set out with the trawler.

“They are in custody and will appear before a local magistrate,” Nikos Alexiou, the Hellenic coastguard spokesperson, told the Guardian. “They are being held by the coastguard in Kalamata.”

A public prosecutor is likely to press several charges against the group including that of mass murder. Local media reports said the ship’s captain was not among them and had died when the vessel went down.

Erasmia Roumana from the United Nations’ refugee agency described the disaster as “really horrific” and added that the survivors were in a very bad psychological state. “Many are in shock, they are so overwhelmed,” she told reporters in the port of Kalamata. “Many worry about the people they travelled with – families or friends.”

All 104 survivors were men aged between 16 and 40, authorities said. Most spent the night in a warehouse in the port. “They’re from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria and Egypt,” said Giorgos Farvas, Kalamata’s deputy mayor. “We’re talking about young men, mostly, who are in a state of huge psychological shock and exhaustion. Some fainted as they walked off the gangplanks from the vessels that brought them here.”

About 30 people were treated in hospital for pneumonia and exhaustion but were not in immediate danger, officials said, and several had been discharged.

Reports suggested up to 750 people had packed on to the fishing boat that capsized and sank early on Wednesday about 50 miles (80km) from the southern coastal town of Pylos while it was being shadowed by the Greek coastguard.

“The fishing boat was 25-30 metres long. Its deck was full of people, and we assume the interior was just as full,” a coastguard spokesperson said. A government spokesperson said smugglers were known to “lock people up to maintain control”.

Greece’s caretaker government has called three days of national mourning, with electoral campaigning ahead of polls on 25 June suspended.

Early on Thursday, a coastguard vessel sailed into Kalamata, transporting victims. After an official count, authorities revised the death toll to 78 from 79.

The coastguard said a surveillance plane from Europe’s Frontex agency had spotted the boat on Tuesday, but officials said people on the boat, which had set off from the Libyan port of Tobruk, repeatedly refused offers of help.

“It was a fishing boat packed with people who refused our assistance because they wanted to go to Italy,” the coastguard spokesperson, Nikos Alexiou, told Skai TV. “We stayed beside it in case it needed our assistance, which they had refused.”

A senior prosecutor on Thursday took over supervision of the investigation into the incident. Alexiou suggested the boat may also have capsized if the coastguard had attempted to stop it without the crew’s and passengers’ cooperation.

But Alexis Tsipras, the leftwing opposition leader, said during a visit to Kalamata port that survivors told him they had “called for help”.

He said:“What sort of protocol does not call for the rescue… of an overloaded boat about to sink?”

Tsipras, who was prime minister from 2015 to 2019 at the peak of Europe’s migration crisis, blamed the continent’s migration policy for the incident. “There are very big political responsibilities,” he said. “The immigration policy that Europe has been following for years … turns the Mediterranean, our seas, into watery graves.”

An independent refugee activist, Nawal Soufi, said on Facebook she had been in contact with people on the boat until 11pm on Tuesday. “The man I was talking to expressly told me: ‘I feel that this will be our last night alive,’” she wrote.

The boat’s engine gave up shortly before midnight UK time on Tuesday and it capsized soon afterwards, with coastguard experts saying the movement of people inside may have caused it to list and overturn. No one onboard was thought to be wearing a life jacket.

The acting Greek migration minister, Daniel Esdras, told the TV station ERT that Greece would examine survivors’ asylum claims but those not entitled to protection would be sent home.

The search operation was due to continue until at least Friday morning, according to government sources. The chances of retrieving the sunken vessel were remote, they said, because the area of international waters where the incident occurred was so deep.

“The chances of finding more people alive are minimal,” a retired Greek coastguard admiral, Nikos Spanos, told ERT. “We have seen old fishing boats like this before from Libya. They are not at all seaworthy. To put it simply, they are floating coffins.”

The deadliest migrant tragedy in Greece was in June 2016, when at least 320 people were listed as dead or missing in a sinking near Crete.

02:22 5 30-Second Breath Work Exercises You Can Do Anywhere
5 30-Second Breath Work Exercises You Can Do Anywhere

Breathing is involuntary, which means most of the time you probably don’t give it much thought. Yet when things go awry, like when you’re stressed, anxious, or afraid, you’ll probably notice changes in your breathing. But you can also harness your breath to inspire calm and focus, especially in moments you need a soothing boost.

Breath work is a form of mind-body training that uses deep, diaphragmatic breathing or belly breathing, which per research, may trigger relaxation responses in the body and lead to a number of health benefits. A research review published in January 2023 in Scientific Reports, for example, concluded that breath work may be effective for improving stress and mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

“We’re all often running at top speed through our days and under constant stress and strain,” says Kate Ingram, registered dietitian-nutritionist and certified yoga teacher in Stamford, Connecticut, who uses breath work as part of her coaching and teaching. “Chronic stress is linked to everything from headaches and poor sleep to anxiety, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Simple deep breathing techniques can really help alter our stress patterns and change these health trajectories.”

What’s more, breath work is highly accessible and you don’t need any special training to get started. “The great thing about breath work is that anyone can do it,” says Ann Russo, LCSW, a professional therapist in Long Beach, California. “You don't need to be a consistent practitioner of meditation or yoga to start reaping the benefits. All you need is a few minutes of quiet and a willingness to experiment with different breathing techniques.”

Here are five 30-second breath work exercises paired with various common life experiences, including expert tips on how to get started.

1. If You Need to Focus, Try Box Breathing
Box breathing, sometimes known as four square, is a simple technique and great for beginners, Ingram says. If your mind is wandering at work or you need some help concentrating on a research project, you may want to give it a try.

To practice box breathing, Ingram recommends the following:

Find a comfortable seat with your back straight and feet flat on the ground.
Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose to the count of four. Fill your lungs completely.
Hold your breath for a count of four. Try not to clench your jaw or hold tension anywhere in your body.
Exhale slowly through your mouth to the count of four letting all the breath out.
Hold your breath again for a count of four.
“Repeat steps 2 to 5 a few times just paying attention to the movement, sound, and feel of your breath,” Ingram says. “If a count of four is too difficult, start with a count of two or three and work your way up.”

2. If You Want to Evoke a Sense of Calm, Try 4-7-8 Breathing
If you need to quiet your mind after a long day, 4-7-8 breathing may help.

“This technique, also known as the ‘relaxing breath,’ is a simple and effective way to calm the mind and body and promote relaxation,” says John Landry, a licensed registered respiratory therapist (RRT) who uses breath work in his practice, in Memphis, Tennessee.

It involves holding your breath after inhalation for a fairly significant length of time. “This retention allows for organs and muscles to get a bit of an oxygen boost, keeping them healthy and vitalized,” explains Ellie Smith, a certified yoga instructor trained in breath work in Mie, Japan. “The longer exhalation stimulates the parasympathetic nervous response, also known as ‘rest and digest.’”

To get started with 4-7-8 breathing, Landry offers the following instructions:

Sit or lie down comfortably, with your back straight and shoulders relaxed.
Close your eyes and take a few normal breaths to settle.
Inhale quietly through your nose for a count of four.
Hold your breath for a count of seven.
Exhale slowly and audibly through your mouth for a count of eight.
Repeat this cycle for a total of four breaths or until you feel more relaxed.
If 4-7-8 is too difficult, start with a 2-4-5 count or a 3-5-6 and work your way up, Ingram recommends. “Just encouraging the longer exhale can really give you a sense of calm,” she says.

3. If You Need a Confidence Boost, Try Lion’s Breath
When you’re preparing for a big presentation at work or getting ready for a job interview, remember to keep lion’s breath in your back pocket.

“This technique is great to give a sense of strength,” Ingram says. “Maybe if you’re not feeling your strongest and need a quick boost.”

To get started, she recommends:

Start in your comfortable upright seated position.
Inhale deeply through your nose.
Exhale loudly through an open mouth with a "ha" sound, sticking your tongue out. You can also make a slight growl like a lion in the back of your throat.
“This breath can release a lot of tension in the face and jaw, reduce stress, and increase your energy,” Ingram says. “It definitely would help if you are feeling self-conscious and need to just not take yourself so seriously for a moment.”

4. If You Need Better Balance, Try Alternate Nostril Breathing
“In Sanskrit this type of breathing is called Nadi Shodhana,” Smith explains. “It works to bring the parasympathetic nervous system and sympathetic nervous system into balance.”

According to traditional yogic philosophy, the left nostril is the gateway to the right side of our brain, she says, which is associated with the parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and digest” response). The right nostril is the gateway to the left hemisphere, responsible for the sympathetic nervous system, which stimulates the “fight or flight” response.

“When we are anxious and stressed for too long, we can become right-nostril dominant,” Smith says. “And the converse is also true. If we are too lethargic and brain-foggy, our left nostril is likely dominant for too long. We can bring the two nervous systems into balance through alternate nostril breathing, to help give them a reset.”

To get started with alternate nostril breathing, Smith suggests:

With your right hand, bend your forefinger and middle finger so the fingertips are resting on the meaty part of your thumb. Bring your thumb to just under the bony part of your right nose. Lift your elbow out to the side so you have space between your lungs and your arm.
Before closing the nostril, inhale. Close the nostril with the thumb and exhale for four. Keep the thumb there and inhale for four. Repeat three to five times and return to normal breathing.
With the ring finger, close the left nostril and open the right. Inhale for four, exhale for four and repeat three to five times before returning to normal breathing.
Inhale, close the right nostril, exhale for four, and inhale for four.
Close the left nostril and open the right. Exhale for four, inhale for four.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 for three to five more rounds, then return to normal breathing for a minute or two before repeating them again.
Beginners may want to stick with steps one to three for a few days before building up to steps four and five, Smith advises.

5. If You Need a Quick Stress Reliever, Try Falling-Out Breathing
Falling-out breath is a simple technique that helps release tension and stress by encouraging a deep exhale, Landry says.

The technique is essentially a few rounds of big sighs, Smith notes. “It emphasizes the exhale, signaling to the body that you're safe and helping you to stimulate the rest and digest response,” she says.

Landry offers the following instructions to practice falling out breath:

Stand or sit in a comfortable position, with your feet shoulder-width apart and your knees slightly bent.
Place your hands on your thighs or your lap.
Take a deep breath in through your nose, filling your lungs completely.
Open your mouth and exhale slowly yet strongly, making a long "haa" sound as you release the breath fully.
Allow your body to relax and repeat several times.
Talk to Your Doctor Before Starting Breath Work if You Have Certain Conditions
While breath work is considered to be generally safe, certain people may want to avoid certain exercises or need to check with their doctor before getting started.

“Breath work can be practiced by people of all ages and fitness levels, though individuals with respiratory issues, cardiovascular disease, or other medical conditions should consult their healthcare provider before beginning a breath work practice,” Landry says.

Smith notes that certain breath work exercises may not be appropriate for people with certain mental health conditions. “For example, if you're feeling anxious, then any techniques that use rapid breathing [may] not be suitable, as these [generally] serve to keep you in that state,” she says.

World's longest-lasting lightbulb continues to illuminate for 122 years

The Centennial Light, located at a fire station in Livermore, California, has been continuously illuminating since 1901, earning it the title of the world's longest-lasting lightbulb.

The 8-centimeter (3.1-inch) masterpiece that was handcrafted by Adolphe Chaillet, the founder of Shelby Electric Company in the 1890s, has provided light for over a century with very few breaks.

The incandescent lamp has since earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-lasting lightbulb and can be observed in a live stream thanks to cameras installed on-site at the fire station.

Remarkably, its snaking filament has gone dark only twice in its 122 years. The first was in 1976, when the fire station moved to a new location, causing a temporary outage.

The second time was on the evening of May 20, 2013, when it stopped working for a short period. However, upon investigation the following day, it was revealed that the cause of this momentary pause was not the bulb itself but rather a minor glitch in the power supply.

Deborah Katz, a scientist who conducted extensive research on the bulb in 2008-2009, found that the filament inside the bulb, likely made of carbon, is eight times thicker than those in modern-day bulbs and possesses a semi-conductive structure.

In an interview with Anadolu Agency (AA), Tom Bramell, a retired deputy fire chief who has been caring for the bulb for nearly half a century, she explained that it was donated to the fire department in 1901 by Dennis Bernal, the owner of Livermore Power and Water.

"In 1976, we moved that light bulb to the new fire station, which at that time was the new headquarters and that's where it's residing and has remained there since 1976. This is only a 60-watt light bulb," Bramell said, adding that it put out just 4 watts of light.

Though he retired two decades ago, Bramell continues to share his knowledge and passion for the bulb.

"I've been around the light bulb for 50 years, and I have talked to people from all over the world. "No one's been able to figure that (the lightbulb) out yet," he said.

Greek shipwreck highlights divided Libya’s inability to stem flow of refugees

The mass drowning of refugees heading from Libya for Italy as their large boat capsized off the coast of Greece underlines Libya’s continuing power vacuum and the inability of its divided leaders to deliver on their promises to stem the profitable people-smuggling trade. It is striking that the ship sailed from the eastern port of Tobruk, a city where local leaders have mounted a campaign against illegal migration.

On 4 May, the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, granted Libya’s strongman in the east, Khalifa Haftar, a meeting in Rome at which she offered to invest in Libya’s east – the country has been divided into a rival east and west since 2015 – in return for action on the smugglers.

Haftar appeared to try to deliver on his deal. On 4 June, his allies imposed a temporary night-time curfew to stop the smugglers. Security forces conducted raids in towns bordering Egypt. They claimed to have found 1,000 people in farms and houses waiting to be taken across the Mediterranean. Boats and a harbour used by the smugglers were destroyed.

The deputy interior minister, Faraj Egaim, one of Libya’s power brokers, urged the population to report the smugglers, and called on tribes controlling the borders into Libya to help.

Some of those rounded up at the beginning of the month – as many as 4,000 – were forcibly marched on foot to the Egyptian border towards Musaid, on the basis that they were there illegally. The violence involved, including the death of a young boy, led to an outcry.

On Monday, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), without identifying the culprits, expressed concerns about the mass “arbitrary arrests and deportations” of thousands of migrants and asylum seekers across the country, including pregnant women and children, who it said were being detained in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. The statement said the campaign was “accompanied by a disturbing rise in hate speech and racist discourse against foreigners online and in the media.”

But the tragic boat journey from Tobruk shows Haftar and his sons did not stop the smuggling trade. Many say the better way to stop the flow is to monitor the inbound Syrian civilian airline flights containing Syrians, Bangladeshis, and Pakistanis.

The Egyptian press has claimed that Haftar’s difficulty is that his brutal writ does not run to the district of Butnan, where Tobruk port is located, reflecting that the Libyan National Army that he leads is in reality an ideologically flexible and loose coalition of militias. Butnan is largely the home of the Obeidat tribe, past supporters of Haftar. Although skilled at dealing with Libya’s many tribes, Haftar and his sons met fierce resistance over the crackdown on the smuggling and border posts.

The UN estimates there are 680,000 migrants in Libya, some looking to travel by boat to Europe and others working full-time in Libya. The UN’s International Organization for Migration said nearly 3,800 people died on migration routes within and from the Middle East and north Africa region last year, the highest number since 2017. About 105,000 migrants and asylum seekers reached Italy by sea in 2022. From the start of this year to June, just over 54 000 arrived, double the number in the same period of the previous year. A growing proportion are coming from the east of Libya.

The chances of Europeans finding effective Libyan allies to control the flow is reduced by the continued absence of a unified national government with authority. The two rival governments in east and west have existed since 2015. The last UN-brokered attempt to strongarm the two sides into holding unified presidential and parliamentary elections fell apart just before the December 2021 election date. The writing had been on the wall long before, since there had been no process of national reconciliation, empowerment of civiil society, finalised constitution or agreement about the distribution of Libya’s considerable resources. Neither the House of Representatives, the Libyan parliament in the east headed by the veteran Aguila Saleh, nor its broad counterpart in the west, the High Council of State, were able to make required compromises about sequencing or candidate eligibility, especially since elections risked them losing power and patronage.

A fresh attempt to agree the basis for elections this December, just brokered in Morocco, also looks likely to founder, leaving the latest UN envoy, Abdoulaye Bathily, under pressure to come up with a plan to break the impasse. But ultimately he needs a collective European leadership once again to engage with Libya rather than rely on bad-faith actors and schemes to criminalise those trying to claim their right to asylum.

Rescued children pay tribute to sniffer dog still missing in Colombian jungle

The four Indigenous children who survived a plane crash and 40 days alone in the Colombian Amazon are continuing their recovery in Bogotá’s military hospital, and the oldest two have been well enough to pick up crayons.

In their first pictures released by Colombia’s armed forces, a four-legged figure jumps from the page: Wilson, the Belgian shepherd dog who helped lead rescuers to their location – and who remains missing in the jungle.

One drawing, signed by Lesly – the 13-year-old credited with keeping her siblings alive through her knowledge of the jungle – shows Wilson between trees and a river. The second, signed by Soleiny, nine, shows the dog next to a large flower, the sun and the Colombian flag.

The four “miracle children” were found in a forest clearing on Friday, more than a month after the plane crash in which their mother and two other adults died.

They had survived by eating fruit, and using large leaves to shelter from the rain – and they told their rescuers that for at least some of the time, they had been accompanied by a large dog.

That animal is believed to have been Wilson, one of 10 military sniffer dogs deployed in the search operation.

Wilson was last seen on Thursday, the day before the children’s rescue. “We saw him about 40 meters away and we tried to call him,” Carlos Villegas, one of the dog handlers told El Tiempo. “My companion drew close to him, he tried to play with him in order to grab him, but [Wilson] ran off.”

It is believed the six-year-old Belgian shepherd may have become disorientated in the thick foliage or that an encounter with a dangerous predator may have caused a change in his normal behaviour.

“According to what the children told us, we can confirm that Wilson, our commando, was with them, quite emaciated and without much to eat out there in the jungle,” Gen Pedro Sánchez, told press on Saturday. “But our faith remains intact and we are still looking for him.”

The dog remains missing and an operation to find him is ongoing.

Meanwhile, a custody battle has broken out among the children’s relatives, with the father of two of them facing accusations of domestic violence.

The siblings are expected to stay in hospital for several days, during which time Colombia’s child protection agency will interview family members to determine who should care for them.

Three Britons confirmed dead in Egypt boat fire

Three British tourists have been confirmed dead after a fire onboard a diving boat off Egypt’s Red Sea coast, a day after they were declared missing after a frantic search by the captain and crew.

Twelve other divers and 14 crew, including the captain of the Hurricane, were rescued after abandoning the ship on Sunday morning. The group had sailed out to Elphinstone reef, a famed diving spot roughly 12km offshore and 30km from the resort town of Marsa Alam.

According to the tour operator Scuba Travel and Tornado Marine Fleet, which operated the diving boat, a fire broke out onboard at 8.30am local time during a diving briefing.

“It is with great regret that we, as the tour operator, with heavy hearts, must accept that three of our much-valued dive guests who had not participated in the dive briefing, early on the morning of June 11, perished in the tragic incident,” said Pat Adamson, a spokesperson for Scuba Travel, the British company that arranged the trip.

Mohamed Bendary, the secretary general of Egypt’s Red Sea governorate, stated that preliminary investigations suggested the blaze began in the boat’s engine room. Egyptian authorities said initial examinations indicated that an electrical short circuit in the engine room sparked the blaze.

The Hurricane is a “liveabord” vessel, designed to accommodate tourists for days at a time. When the fire occurred, the group were reportedly at the end of a six-day stay on the boat.

“At the time the fire broke out 12 divers were participating in a briefing onboard, while those missing had apparently decided not to dive that morning. The severity of the fire meant that the 12 divers were immediately evacuated by boat to another craft nearby and the 14 crew members, including the captain and two dive guides, having tried to reach the missing guests, also had to abandon ship and were rescued,” said Adamson.

“The dive boat Hurricane is currently being towed to a port, yet to be nominated, as the vessel is still smouldering with cooling required before entry,” said Adamson.

Footage of the boat off the coast of the resort town of Marsa Alam showed fire engulfing both decks of the ship as smoke billowed into the air.

He added that Tornado Marine Fleet had maintained a strong safety record with Scuba UK. Tornado Marine Fleet, a company based in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh offering trips onboard liveabord vessels, previously confirmed the incident and ongoing investigations, but did not respond when contacted concerning the deaths onboard the Hurricane or to discuss details of the vessel’s safety record.

According to the website of Tornado Marine Fleet, the 188-ft Hurricane was built in 2004. The vessel included twin diesel engines as well as onboard whirlpool and entertainment systems, plus what the company described as a “firefighting and alarm system”.

In recent posts on Facebook, the company offered last-minute spaces onboard the Hurricane for diving excursions in the Red Sea in May and June. Pictures of the interior of the boat showed luxurious cabins with wood floors and walls, a dining room and living room lined with velvet banquettes and an onboard chef.

Abdulrahman Alsarheed, a Kuwaiti tourist who witnessed the blaze, said the fire had spread fast, engulfing the entire boat within minutes.

Images showed some of the passengers jumping from the ship to reach a smaller boat alongside it to escape the blaze.

“There was light smoke, and in one or two minutes the smoke became white and heavy, and then it turned black, and the fire broke out so fast because it was windy in the morning,” Alsarheed said.

The 12 rescued divers were taken to Marsa Shagra, a village north of Marsa Alam, where they received medical attention and gave statements to police, as local authorities pledged to investigate the cause of the fire.

Scuba UK said the group was receiving consular assistance to return to the UK, after all of their personal possessions including passports were destroyed in the fire onboard the Hurricane.

A spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office said: “We are in contact with local authorities following an incident aboard a dive boat near Marsa Alam, and are supporting British nationals involved.”

Egypt’s Red Sea resorts are home to some of the country’s most renowned beach destinations and are popular with holidaymakers. The area has cemented its reputation as a dive destination, with easy access to coral reefs from shores and dive sites with diverse marine life.

UK government under fire for investing overseas aid in fossil fuel firms

The UK government is under attack for investing taxpayers’ money in fossil fuel companies, a hospital in Kenya accused of imprisoning patients who couldn’t pay for treatment, and a business in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that exposed workers to dangerous chemicals and dumped untreated industrial waste.

MPs questioned the investments at a two-hour session in parliament on Tuesday, and excoriated Andrew Mitchell, minister for development, for making overseas aid available to a company owned by Africa’s richest man that is suspected of causing serious environmental damage.

The investments made by British International Investment (BII) – which is owned by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office – are worth tens of millions of pounds.

BII was set up to provide funds to “solve the biggest global development challenges”, such as the effects of the climate crisis and unemployment, and to reduce poverty in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, according to its website.

Six months into his role as minister for development, Mitchell set out his vision for the future of development when he put BII “at the very forefront” of development finance.

However, MPs on the international development committee said the BII holds at least 20 investments in fossil fuel companies, as revealed by Open Democracy last year. It has invested, through a third party, in Dangote Industries, owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.

Mitchell said: “The fact that Mr Dangote is a wealthy man does not obviate our ability to do business with him and drive forward investment. If he is co-investing with BII in industry, the fact that he’s rich seems to be quite encouraging.”

But Sarah Champion, chair of the international development committee, condemned the investment: “This is development money. This is meant to be pioneering money that attracts other investors but it shouldn’t be used to partner up with very rich people in the beginning,” she said.

Dangote Industries is a business conglomerate that owns Dangote Cement, Africa’s leading cement producer, and runs the “largest coal mining” operation in Nigeria.

A 2019 report commissioned by the climate organisation 350.org raised concerns that the company’s mining activities had led to the contamination of soil and drinking water for local communities.

MPs questioned how investments in companies that are big polluters were in line with the Paris agreement in 2015, that the UK signed, pledging to keep global heating at or below 1.5C before 2030.

“Investments were made according to instructions from the shareholder at that time,” said Mitchell. “I cannot tell you whether they would be allowed today.”

He added: “We expect all investments to comply with the Paris agreement.”

MPs also criticised money given to China National Investment and Guaranty Corporation which, they said, has links to China’s belt and road initiative, a plan to develop two new trade routes connecting China with the rest of the world. The project is treated with suspicion in the UK and other countries, including the US, and is “causing grave concern in terms of future security” for the UK, according to Chris Law, a member of the international development committee.

MPs asked about investments made in Feronia – a palm oil business in DRC accused of various human rights abuses and that exposed workers to dangerous chemicals and pesticides, and dumped untreated industrial waste. Mitchell admitted it was “an extremely complex and difficult investment” that he believed BII no longer had.

https://www.techrum.vn/threads/uk-government-under-fire-for-investing-overseas-aid-in-fossil-fuel-firms.713761/

They also questioned BII’s investment in a Nairobi women’s hospital that has been accused of detaining patients who couldn’t pay bills and charging women living in poverty more than £1,300 to give birth. Mitchell told the committee there had been “a significant issue”, but that “steps had been taken to put it right”.

Both of these situations were uncovered by journalists or charities, said MPs, raising questions about safeguarding and transparency.

“Obviously we strongly encourage scrutiny,” Mitchell said. “I hope we will be able to do more to underline the importance of transparency.”

Killer of three Israeli soldiers was Egyptian border police officer, says army

A man who shot and killed three Israeli soldiers in a rare incident on the Sinai border with Egypt has been identified by the Israeli military as a member of the Egyptian border police.

Two Israel Defence Forces (IDF) combat soldiers were killed early on Saturday morning at a military post near Mount Harif, in the Negev desert, the army said. The discovery of their bodies a few hours later triggered a manhunt in which a third soldier was killed, as well as the assailant. A fourth Israeli soldier sustained minor injuries in the shootout.

An IDF statement on Sunday identified the attacker as an Egyptian police officer, who was killed by Israeli troops after being found “in Israeli territory”. It said an investigation “in full cooperation with the Egyptian army” was under way.

Israeli media reported that the unnamed assailant entered Israeli territory through an emergency crossing in the border fence designed to allow the IDF to access the restive Sinai peninsula, where smuggling rings running guns and drugs and terrorist groups such as Islamic State are active.

Israel has rejected Egypt’s claim that a member of the country’s security forces had been chasing drug smugglers crossing the security fence, and that “an exchange of fire” took place.

The IDF said it seized drugs and contraband goods worth 1.5m shekels (£320,000) on the border at about 2am local time on Saturday, but no link had been established between that operation and the later attack.

Funerals for Sgt Lia Ben Nun, 19, Staff Sgt Ori Yitzhak Iluz, 19, and Staff Sgt Ohad Dahan, 20, were scheduled to take place on Sunday afternoon.

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, called the killings a terrorist attack. “Israel relayed a clear message to the Egyptian government. We expect that the joint investigation will be exhaustive and thorough,” he said in televised remarks.

“We will refresh procedures and methods of operations and also the measures to reduce to a minimum the smuggling and to ensure tragic terrorist attacks like this do not happen again.”

Israel’s defence minister, Yoav Gallant, discussed the incident with his Egyptian counterpart, Mohammed Zaki, both ministries said.

Egypt was the first Arab country to make peace with Israel after the Camp David accords of 1978. While the two countries cooperate closely on security issues, particularly in regards to the Gaza Strip, the Egyptian public is largely opposed to normalisation.

Israel built a security fence along the 140-mile Sinai border in 2013 to stem a surge in attacks from militant groups operating in the peninsula’s vast desert, as well as the flow of migrants and refugees from places such as Sudan.

Police release e-fit of man found dead in wheel bay of Gatwick-bound plane

Police have released a digitised image of a man who was found dead in the undercarriage of a plane, as they work to identify him.

The man’s body was found on a Tui flight from the Gambia to the UK. His body was discovered at Gatwick airport at about 4am on 7 December, Sussex police said at the time.

He was found without any identity documents. He is believed to have been in his 20s or 30s and information has been shared with authorities in the west African country.

Departing from Banjul international airport, the plane had completed a 3,600-mile trip to the London airport. The average flight between the two destinations is usually about six hours.

DI Darren Lillywhite of Sussex police said: “This was a tragic case, and we are working to establish the identity of the man found deceased. Somewhere, this man will have relatives or loved ones who do not know what has happened to him.”

Detectives are hoping to identify the man for an inquest, which may provide answers for his loved ones.

Lillywhite said: “In particular, we are seeking contact from anyone in the UK that may have been expecting to meet a friend or family member who failed to arrive in December, as well as anyone in the Gambia or neighbouring countries who may have knowledge about an individual who made travel plans to come to the UK or Europe.”

At the time of the discovery, Ebrima G Sankareh, the Gambia’s government spokesperson, said: “According to the information, the deceased black male was found within the wheel bay of the aircraft without identification documents to establish his name, age, nationality or travel itinerary. It is, therefore, not clear at this stage who he is.”

Previously there have been instances of stowaways being found dead after boarding a UK-bound flight. In 2019, the body of a man who fell from a Kenya Airways flight landed in a south London garden as the plane came in to Heathrow airport.

In 2012, José Matada fell to his death from a British Airways flight inbound from Angola. Matada, originally from Mozambique, was found on the pavement in East Sheen, south-west London, on 9 September.

18:41 Brazilian Amazon at risk of being taken over by mafia, ex-police chief warns
Brazilian Amazon at risk of being taken over by mafia, ex-police chief warns

The rapid advance of organised crime groups in the Brazilian Amazon risks turning the region into a vast, conflict-stricken hinterland plagued by heavily armed “criminal insurgents”, a former senior federal police chief has warned.

Alexandre Saraiva, who worked in the Amazon from 2011 to 2021, said he feared the growing footprint of drug-trafficking mafias in the region could spawn a situation similar to the decades-long drug conflict in Rio de Janeiro, where the police’s battle with drug gangs and paramilitaries has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

“I experienced how the state lost control of public security in Rio de Janeiro,” Saraiva said. “And in the Amazon today – if nothing is done in terms of public security – we are facing a continent-sized Rio de Janeiro, with the aggravating factors of borders with major drug producers and an extraordinarily difficult jungle setting.”

Saraiva warned of dire consequences for the rainforest and its inhabitants if criminal gangs were allowed to grow into powerful armies like the rebel factions in neighbouring Colombia. “We will have criminal insurgents … [whose] ideology is money,” he said.

“We will have areas of conflagration, of major conflict between groups which are fighting over areas of illegal gold and timber extraction. In the middle of this, we will have Indigenous victims. And we will face immense logistical difficulties in combating this,” warned the police chief, the author of a recent book called Jungle: Loggers, Miners and Corruption in a Lawless Amazon.

The alert came ahead of the first anniversary of the killings of the British journalist Dom Phillips and the Brazilian Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, whose deaths exposed widespread environmental devastation and the growing reach of organised crime groups in the Amazon.

A year after their killings, the Guardian has joined 15 other international news media organisations and more than 50 journalists in a collaborative investigation into organised crime and resource extraction in the Brazilian Amazon, in an effort coordinated by Forbidden Stories, the Paris-based non-profit dedicated to continuing the work of reporters who are threatened, censored or killed.

Figures collated for the Bruno and Dom project by the Brazilian Forum on Public Safety (FBSP) paint a bleak portrait of organised crime’s deadly impact on the region, showing that:

With more than 8,000 deaths, the rate of intentional lethal violent crime in the Brazilian Amazon’s nine states was more than 50% higher than in the rest of the country last year – a murder rate similar to that of Mexico.
In Amazonas state, where Bruno Pereira and Dom Phillips were among 1,432 people killed last year, the murder rate was 74% above the national average. 2021 was even more violent with 1,571 victims and a violent death rate of 36.8 per 100,000 inhabitants – five times that of the US.

The number of people killed by military and civil police grew 71% in the Amazon between 2016 and 2021, compared with 35% in the rest of Brazil. The Amazon’s prison population grew 35.1% between 2016 an 2022 compared with 14.1% elsewhere, helping prison-run factions to flourish in overcrowded jails.
Brazil’s two most powerful crime factions – São Paulo’s PCC (First Capital Command) and Rio’s CV (Red Command) – now operate in all nine Amazon states, as do at least 15 other regional crime groups, including Os Crias, the Família do Norte and Class A Command.
Last year, the FBSP revealed how the Amazon now contained 10 of Brazil’s 30 most violent municipalities. They included remote illegal mining and drug smuggling hubs such as Jacareacanga and Japurá, and Novo Progresso, a deforestation hotspot from where Phillips reported for the Guardian in 2020. All three towns had staggeringly high murder rates of more than 100 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The advance of organised crime groups in the Amazon was laid bare by the killings of Pereira and Phillips last year in the Javari valley, an Austria-sized sweep of rivers and rainforests on Brazil’s border with Colombia and Peru, the world’s top two cocaine producers.

Brazil’s environment minister, Marina Silva, told the Guardian that violence had long been “a hallmark of the predatory occupation of the Amazon”, pointing to the assassinations of activists such as Chico Mendes in 1988 and Sister Dorothy Stang in 2005.

The military dictatorship’s decision to colonise the Amazon in the 1960s – supposedly to stop hostile foreign powers commandeering the sparsely populated region – sparked a deadly struggle for land and resources, devastated Indigenous communities and caused deforestation to soar.

However, Silva said the “overlapping of multiple forms of criminality” in the Amazon now meant the state needed to increase its presence in affected regions. She highlighted the new government’s battle to evict illegal miners with links to the PCC from the Yanomami Indigenous territory.

The Public Safety Forum’s president, Renato Sérgio de Lima, said the statistics collected by his group’s researchers underlined how the arrival of drug factions had made a bad situation worse, causing Amazon murder rates to soar even as they fell elsewhere in Brazil.

Lima traced the advance of such groups into the Amazon to 2016 when a notorious drug trafficker was killed on Brazil’s border with Paraguay. That assassination helped the PCC consolidate its control of the drug smuggling route focused on the border town of Ponta Porã and forced its rival, the CV, to look further north to the Amazon.

The CV’s destination was Tabatinga, a scruffy town on the tri-border with Colombia and Peru, near where Phillips and Pereira were killed last June.

Lima estimated that the cocaine being smuggled through Brazil was now responsible for 4% of the South American country’s GDP – with about 40% of those illegal profits coming through the Amazon.

“We are talking about something like $25bn being injected into the Amazon’s economy every year and the region isn’t ready to deal with this,” he said, warning that the response from the armed forces had been woefully inadequate, with the army and navy seizing just 41 firearms in 2022.

Aerial images filmed by Brazil’s Globoplay, one of the news organisations involved in the Bruno and Dom project, showed a suspected cocaine laboratory and a series of coca farms that had been carved out of the jungles on the Peruvian side of the Javari. “If the Brazilian state doesn’t intervene in an urgent and firm manner, we’re going to have [entire] regions that are run by narco-traffickers,” said Beto Marubo, a prominent Indigenous leader who was close to Pereira.

Lima warned that if nothing was done, “the military’s fear [of losing control of the Amazon] will become almost a self-fulfilling prophesy. We will effectively lose sovereignty over the region and the region will be consolidated as the main narco-trafficking smuggling route in Brazil and to Europe.”

Rodrigo Chagas, an Amazon-based researcher who is studying the drug gangs’ rapid expansion for the FBSP, echoed the warnings of “Colombianisation”, which could see security forces launch a catastrophic “war on drugs” similar to the one that has blighted Brazil’s neighbour for decades.

“It’s possible the Amazon will see tremendous havoc. This is a scenario that worries me, because the public security responses we tend to see are ‘war on drugs’-style responses – a war which is utterly detrimental to local populations,” Chagas said.

Saraiva noted how Brazil’s armed forces had historically been obsessed with the supposed threat of an “external enemy” annexing the Amazon, a vast region nine times the size of France. “Meanwhile, we have an internal criminal insurgency which is corroding the Brazilian nation from within, [and] it’s happening far faster than we imagine,” warned Saraiva, who was the federal police chief in three Amazon states, Amazonas, Maranhão and Roraima.

23:57 5 Popular Supplements That May Have Hidden Dangers
5 Popular Supplements That May Have Hidden Dangers

When it comes to supplements, there’s so much hype about their potential benefits that it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. While it’s true that vitamins and minerals are essential to health, it’s not true that taking them in pill, capsule, or powder form — especially in megadoses — is necessary or without risks.

For one thing, dietary supplements can sometimes interact with each other, as well as with over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medication. In addition, unlike with drugs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not authorized to review dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed. It’s up to manufacturers to ensure that their products do not contain contaminants or impurities, are properly labeled, and contain what they claim. In other words, the regulation of dietary supplements is much less strict than it is for prescription or OTC drugs.

In March 2023, the FDA unveiled its new Dietary Supplement Ingredient Directory, a web page intended to help the public stay informed about the ingredients used in dietary supplements. Consumers can use the directory to look up ingredients used in products marketed as dietary supplements and find out what the FDA has said about that ingredient and whether the agency has taken any action pertaining to the ingredient.

According to the FDA, more than half of Americans take herbal or dietary supplements daily, with a report by Grandview Research noting the dietary supplements market was valued at $151.9 billion worldwide in 2021.

1. Vitamin D: Too Much Can Harm Your Kidneys
Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in the body, and having enough is central to health and well-being, offering the promise of protecting bones and preventing bone diseases like osteoporosis, per the NIH. Supplemental vitamin D is popular because it’s difficult (if not impossible for some) to get enough from food.

Also, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes, our bodies make vitamin D when bare skin is exposed to direct sunlight, but increased time spent indoors and widespread use of sunblock, as a necessary way to prevent skin aging and skin cancer, has minimized the amount of vitamin D many of us get from sun exposure.

2. St. John’s Wort: Avoid Drug Interactions
St. John’s wort is a plant used as a tea or in capsules, with purported benefits for depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, menopause symptoms, insomnia, kidney and lung issues, obsessive-compulsive disorder, wound healing, and more, notes the NIH.

Small studies have shown St. John’s wort to be effective at treating mild depression. For example, a review of short-term studies looked at 27 clinical trials with about 3,800 patients and suggested that the herbal remedy worked as well as certain antidepressants at decreasing symptoms of mild to moderate depression.

But, says Denise Millstine, MD, an internist in the department of integrative medicine at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, “the biggest issue with St. John’s wort is its medication interactions.”

3. Calcium: The Excess May Settle in Your Arteries
Calcium is essential for a strong skeleton, but as with all nutrients, too much of this mineral may be harmful. As the NIH notes, more than 2,500 mg per day for adults ages 19 to 50, and more than 2,000 mg per day for individuals 51 and over, can lead to problems.

With calcium supplements, hardened arteries, or atherosclerosis, and a higher risk of heart disease, are risks, though research is mixed, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

4. Multivitamins and Multiminerals: No Substitute for a Healthy Diet
Think that a healthy lifestyle requires not just good-for-you foods, exercise, and enough sleep but also taking a daily multivitamin-multimineral supplement? When you consider that an estimated one-third of adults in the United States and one-quarter of youths take them, per the NIH, you may be surprised to learn that the jury’s still out on whether they’re helpful.

One study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, which examined data from nearly 40,000 women older than 19 who were part of the Iowa Women’s Health Study, found that, on average, women who took supplements had a higher risk of early death than women who didn’t take supplements. Multivitamins did little or nothing to protect against common cancers, cardiovascular disease, or death.

Other research has found benefits to taking multivitamins. For example, a study in the August 2017 Nutrients concluded that frequent use of multivitamin and mineral supplements helped prevent micronutrient shortfalls that might otherwise cause health problems.

5. Fish Oil Supplements: Choose Fish or Flaxseed Instead
Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil has been touted as a means to reduce heart disease and other ailments. Yet increasing evidence suggests that fish oil supplements have questionable benefits.

For example, a study published in January 2019 in the New England Journal of Medicine found that omega-3 supplements did nothing to reduce heart attacks, strokes, or deaths from heart disease in middle-aged and older men and women without any known risk factors for cardiovascular disease. An earlier study analyzed people at high risk for cardiovascular disease and also reported no benefit.

Plus, a later review and meta-analysis of 83 randomized controlled trials, which was published in August 2019 in the journal BMJ, revealed that omega-3s, whether in supplement or food form, didn’t reduce type 2 diabetes risk among the 58,000 participants involved.

But it’s not all negative news when it comes to omega-3 supplements: A large randomized controlled trial published in January 2022 in BMJ suggests that fish oil supplements may provide health benefits when combined with vitamin D supplements, though in this case the benefits weren’t statistically significant. The authors observed that this cocktail, as well as vitamin D supplements alone, led to a lower incidence of autoimmune conditions such as psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Peruvian police seize 58kg of cocaine bearing pictures of Nazi flag

Peruvian anti-drug police have seized 58 one-kilo packages of cocaine destined for Belgium bearing a picture of a Nazi flag on the outside and the name Hitler printed in low relief.

The discovery occurred in the port of Paita, on Peru’s northern Pacific coast close to its border with Ecuador.

The drugs were hidden inside a shipping container carrying asparagus on the Liberian-flagged vessel SC Anisha R that had earlier anchored in an Ecuadorian port, according to a police report obtained by Associated Press. It said the shipment was destined for a port in Belgium.

The Peruvian police’s anti-drug directorate showed videos and photographs to AP revealing that the drugs were inside the ventilation system of a container. Police continued to search the more than 80 containers on the vessel.

Peruvian authorities have previously reported finding cocaine in brick-shaped packages with various and strange symbols, but never one with the flag of Nazi Germany.

Authorities in Peru estimate that the country produces about 90 tonnes of drugs a year and most leaves for Europe by sea, but also through small planes that carry cocaine to Bolivia, on its way to Atlantic ports.

Peru is the world’s second-largest grower of coca leaf, according to the United Nations, and the second-largest producer of cocaine, according to the US Drug Enforcement Administration.

The free press is under attack from multiple forces. Media outlets are closing their doors, victims to a broken business model. In much of the world, journalism is morphing into propaganda, as governments dictate what can and can’t be printed. In the last year alone, hundreds of reporters have been killed or imprisoned for doing their jobs. The UN reports that 85% of the world’s population experienced a decline in press freedom in their country in recent years.

15:44 Turkish Honey Tips and Facts to Celebrate World Bee Day in the Ecosystem
Turkish Honey Tips and Facts to Celebrate World Bee Day in  the Ecosystem

This date coincides with the birthday of Slovenian beekeeper Anton Jansa,  considered a pioneer of modern beekeeping techniques. Slovenia is also the country that has asked the United Nations to make this day the  official day for bees and other pollinating insects such as butterflies, bats and hummingbirds, which are extremely important to the global ecosystem but are increasingly threatened by human activities.

Pollination is vital to the survival of our ecosystems, as nearly 90% of the world's wildflower species, 75% of the world's food crops, and 35% of the world's farmland depend on pollinators, increasing their greatest work in the world for  food supply and biodiversity . Unfortunately, climate change and development are threatening their habitats in catastrophic ways, which is why this awareness day is so important.

 Lucky Honey from Türkiye
In Türkiye, honey has always been a precious commodity, with a history stretching back thousands of years, as evidenced by bee coins found in ancient  Ephesus and a mention of the product in Homer's epic, the Iliad 'Every wandering in the forest or a picturesque view of the pristine hills of nature would, for the Turks, provide sufficient evidence of the popularity of the beekeeping profession from the light boxes of the beehive, and thus the abundance of this liquid gold. In Turkish
, "ballı", which translates to "with honey" in English, indicates that someone is particularly "lucky", such as in the case of a lottery winner.

 Honey in Turkish Culinary Tradition
Honey is prized for both its role in the kitchen and for its medicinal properties and is certainly a precious commodity here in Turkey that most families have on hand. It is usually a staple of a Turkish breakfast and is often accompanied by butter or, better still, buffalo cream (called kaymak) and spread generously on  freshly baked  bread. Honey is the main ingredient of Türkiye's most popular ice cream flavor, Ballı
Badem, a delicious blend of crunchy almonds and you guessed it baby. Additionally, it can be used as a sweetener in candies and pastries, and as a syrup to pour over baklava. It is also used to prepare the spicy Ottoman dish Ballı Mahmudiye, named after the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud I himself, which contains honey and dried fruit with chicken.

Türkiye’s honey production
There are no less than 25 geographically patented types of honey in Türkiye, which also has nearly 9 million hives in operation as denoted by the Turkish Statistical Institution (TurkStat) in 2022 and listed on a special honey map of the country prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and accessible on balharitasi.tarimorman.gov.tr. The average annual amount of honey produced per hive is 12.8 kilograms (around 28 pounds), while Türkiye produces nearly 115,000 tons annually. While Muğla is the province home to the highest number of hives at nearly 1 million, Adana produces the best value per hive, with each hive making 25.6 kilograms on average, followed by Çanakkale province where the average is 24.2 kilograms and Sivas at 18.8 kilograms. Thus, it should come as no surprise that Adana produces the highest amount of honey in the nation.

At 92%, Türkiye produces the highest amount of pine honey in the world, while the most prevalent variation within the nation is undisputedly flower honey, in Turkish "çiçek balı." Türkiye also produces the most expensive honey in the world as the Guinness World Records established in 2021, naming Centauri honey sold at upwards of $11,000 per kilogram as the world’s most prized honey variety. This medicinal honey is produced in an uninhabited region of the Black Sea coast of Sile and in caves that are at approximately 2,000- 3,000 meters above sea level and only accessible through the efforts of skilled rock climbers, who can typically only extract 10 to 15 kilograms each year.

The most touristic region for honey is Muğla’s Köyçeğiz, a spectacular slice of nature with indigenous liquid amber forests, mountains and creeks that surrounds the Köyçeğiz Lake that feeds into the Dalyan River and Iztuzu Beach of the Aegean Sea. The quaint town of Köyçeğiz makes for an excellent stop to relax at any of the cafes along the lake, visit the bustling and prolific farmers’ market, which is also visitable by boat trips setting out from the expat hub of Dalyan, and to of course peruse the vast selection of honey that happens to be on offer in this region. From lavender to thyme and to citrus and you name it, there are dozens of varieties of monoflower honey that can be purchased in town or in shops housed in nomadic tents set up along the highway.

A word of warning for Türkiye’s “deli bal,” which in English mean “crazy honey,” as found in the Kaçkar Mountains and revered for its medicinal properties. It also contains a neurotoxin that can lead to hallucinations and nausea when consumed in abundance as evidenced by a poor bear who hit the headlines for being found intoxicated after having excessively consumed this type of honey.

Workshops for the kids
Meanwhile, the supermarket chain Migros will be offering 175 different events in honor of World Bee Day that will be held in their family club center, (Aile Kulüplerinde) until May 26. Geared toward children and their families, the events will include workshops, seminars, storytelling and cooking classes all centered around themes involving honey and the precious bee.

16:46 4 Incredible Technological Inventions In The Last Decade That Changed The World
4 Incredible Technological Inventions In The Last Decade That Changed The World

The years 2010-2020 were an extraordinary decade for the technology industry. Just 10 years ago Facebook was the most popular social media platform and Instagram didn't even exist, the giant Uber had just taken off and mobile phones were much smaller and bulkier.

But in the last ten years incredible technical inventions have completely changed our lives. Here are the 4 coolest things we learned in 2010.

iPad
The iPad is arguably one of the most handy inventions of 2010, making it easier to watch movies, reply to emails and surf the web on the go.

The device is a hybrid laptop and mobile phone, but not as massive as the former and as small as the latter.

When it was first released in 2010, the iPad cost at least $499, but prices could go as high as $829. Since then, Apple has only improved the technology, releasing new iterations every year that cost more and more.

Snapchat
Snapchat may have been on the decline in recent years, but when the photo-sharing app first launched in 2011, it was Instagram's closest competitor.

The app was originally called Pictaboo, but as it grew in popularity among teenagers, the name and logo were changed to make it more appealing.Today, the app is worth $22 billion and is famous for its whimsical filters and disappearing photos.

Instagram
Before Snapchat was invented, there was only one photo sharing app that we all know today as Instagram.
,
Launched in 2010, the app received 25,000 new registrations on day one and was named the fastest growing iOS app in a year. In 2012, she was acquired by Facebook for $1 billion. Currently, the app has over a billion users and is valued at $102 billion.

Lyft
Like Snapchat, Lyft has become a competitor to its industry's biggest player, Uber. The company started out as a ridesharing app for long commutes and campus students who wanted to share rides, but quickly grew into a $13 billion company that's now expanding into e-bikes and driverless cars. The company is only 7 years old and was already listed in 2018.

4 Incredible Tech Inventions in the Last Decade That Changed the World as We Know It

2010-2020 has been a pretty incredible decade for the tech industry. Just 10 years ago, Facebook was the most popular social media platform and Instagram hadn’t even come into existence, ride-hailing giant Uber was just taking off and the cell phones were a lot smaller and chunkier.

But the past decade has seen some incredible tech inventions that have changed our lifes completely. Here are 4 of the coolest things we’ve been introduced to in the 2010’s.

The iPad
The iPad has to be one of the most convenient inventions of the 2010’s that have made it easier to watch videos, answer emails and browse the internet on the go.

The device is a hybrid of a laptop and a cellphone, although not quite as chunky as the former and not as small as the latter.

When it first came out in 2010, the iPad cost a minimum of $499 but the prices could go as high as $829. Since then, Apple has only improved on the technology, releasing new iterations every year that progressively cost more.

Snapchat
Snapchat may be on a downward trend over the past few years, but when the photo-sharing app first came out in 2011, it was Instagram’s toughest competitor.

The app was originally called Pictaboo, but as it slowly gained traction among the teens, its name and logo were changed to add to its appeal. Today, the app is worth $22 billion and is popular for its quirky filters and disappearing photos.

Instagram
Prior to Snapchat’s invention there was only one photo-sharing app on the rise which we all know today as Instagram.

Launched in 2010, the app gained 25,000 new signups on the first day, and within a year, it was named the fastest growing app on iOS and by 2012, it was acquired by Facebook for $1 billion. Today, the app has over a billion users and is valued at $102 billion.

Lyft
Just like Snapchat, Lyft also rose as a competitor for the biggest player in its industry, Uber.

The company started as a carpooling app for lengthy trips and campus students who wanted to share rides but it quickly grew into a $13 billion ride-hailing business that is now expanding to electric bikes and self-driving cars. The company is only 7-years-old and it already went public in 2018.

22:07 What Is Intermittent Fasting? A Detailed Beginner's Guide
What Is Intermittent Fasting? A Detailed Beginner's Guide

By now, you’ve no doubt heard of intermittent fasting (IF). Maybe your brother skipped out on brunch the last time you got together because it was too early for him to eat. Or maybe your friend couldn’t do a late dinner last time you saw her.

Although IF has become part of the popular diet lexicon in recent years, fasting overall is nothing new. Hippocrates was reportedly the first person to use fasting in the fifth century B.C. to treat illness, and it is an essential part of many religious traditions, including in Islam.right up arrow
There are many reasons why you might try fasting, or specifically IF, from weight loss to wellness. Use this scientific guide to get the lowdown on IF specifically. You’ll also find tips for how to set yourself up for success if you decide to start.

Intermittent Fasting?
Unlike some other diets, intermittent fasting doesn’t have a long list of rules. Instead, the approach is all about “entirely or partially restraining or abstaining from eating during a specific period of time,” says Heather Bauer, RDN, founder of Heather Bauer Nutrition in New York City.

In other words, IF involves pauses from eating. While some people find that they enjoy IF, this is not the right diet for everyone, she says.

How Intermittent Fasting Works
You choose how you want to do IF by deciding which days of the week you will fast. On fasting days, you’ll likely follow a severe calorie-restricted diet or you may not eat at all. You can also fast for a certain time every day. Ultimately, this results in consuming fewer calories over the course of the week, and some experts, including Caroline Susie, RDN, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in Dallas, say that this calorie reduction is what sometimes leads to weight loss and then potentially additional metabolic benefits.

Types of Intermittent Fasting
There is no one standard way to practice IF. “Intermittent fasting is an umbrella term for three different types of diets,” says Krista Varady, PhD, a professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois in Chicago and a researcher on intermittent fasting. Here’s what you’re most likely to see, she says:

Alternate-Day Fasting
For the most common type of alternate-day fasting, you eat 500 calories every other day. On off days, you can eat what you want.

5:2 Diet
Popular in the United Kingdom, you consume 500 calories on two nonconsecutive days per week. On the other days, you eat whatever you like.

Time-Restricted Eating
You choose a window of time during which you can eat (feast); the rest of the day you don’t eat (fast). One popular setup is 16:8, which means you fast for 16 hours and you can eat during the other eight hours. For instance, you might set your eating window from 12 noon to 8 p.m. daily. (This could also be called skipping breakfast.)

Potential Health Benefits of Intermittent Fasting
Overall, rigorous, long-term research on intermittent fasting is still limited, and many of the conclusions you’ll read online are based on animal studies, says Susie. It’s unclear whether any type of IF is truly safe or effective in the long run.right up arrow
So proceed with caution. With that in mind, here’s how IF may benefit you:

Heart Disease Prevention
Though more research is needed, one review concluded that IF is promising for improving cardiovascular health because it decreases cardiovascular risk factors, such as obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and diabetes.right up arrow Right now, say researchers, it’s unclear which type of IF is best for heart health.

Treat Type 2 Diabetes
IF may be a promising treatment for type 2 diabetes.right up arrow Fasting aids in weight loss, decreases insulin resistance, and favorably affects hormones released by fat cells that impact appetite and inflammation levels. That said, if you have diabetes, you should not attempt IF on your own without talking to your doctor first.

Fend Off Alzheimer’s Disease and Stroke
While research is still ongoing, some studies find that intermittent fasting may help decrease the risk of stroke and Alzheimer’s disease.right up arrow That said, much of this understanding comes from animal research, and it’s not clear when one should start IF during the course of their life to decrease the risk of neurological conditions. What’s more, despite what proponents say about IF improving cognitive abilities, such as focus, IF does not appear to be a short-term brain-booster.

Improve Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
In a systematic review and meta-analysis of six studies, people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (liver disease seen in people with obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome) who practiced IF saw an improvement in liver function tests, compared with individuals who didn’t fast. The authors concluded this was because IF leads to weight loss.right up arrow Nonetheless, the researchers point out that more large-scale, randomized studies are needed before making specific recommendations.
Weight Loss Effects of Intermittent Fasting

When on IF, you’re simply eating during fewer time periods, whether that be fewer hours in the day or fewer days of eating. “In our research, we’ve found that time-restricted eating naturally cuts out several hundred calories per day,” says Dr. Varady. That roughly results in losing about one to two pounds per week, she has observed in her research. It’s similar to doing a calorie-restricted diet every day, but a touted benefit is that you don’t have to count calories.

One of her studies found that people who reduced their eating window to eight hours per day consumed about 300 fewer calories and lost about 3 percent of their body weight over 12 weeks. On the other hand, alternate-day fasting may help someone cut 25 to 35 percent of their daily calories (over the course of the week) and leads to weight loss of 4 to 6 percent of body weight over 12 weeks. right up arrow

Another review of 11 meta-analyses concluded that IF, particularly alternate-day fasting, was beneficial for helping overweight or obese adults decrease their body mass index (BMI), a measure of body weight, better than a regular diet.right up arrow “With alternate-day fasting, the weight comes off twice as fast,” says Varady. The thing is, compared with time-restricted eating, many people find alternate-day fasting more difficult to sustain and fit into real-life scenarios, she says. In Varady’s research, 30 to 40 percent of people dropped out of alternate-day fasting studies, she says. Conversely, time-restricted eating only has a dropout rate of 5 percent in Varady’s research.
That said, more long-term data (based on following people for one to two years) is needed. The majority of Varady's published research has lasted a maximum of six months.

Man Utd takeover will reveal outraged supporter volatility and City should thank the Glazers

 Morale Highs
Fan City  here. I've really enjoyed the city's emails for the past week or two, especially when the author is said to be in a moral quandary. Cities are cheaters, financial cheaters, their trophies are empty and so on. It wouldn't be possible without the zillions of petro states etc.

Isn’t it interesting that the most vociferous of these come from fans of what I would call the ‘old PL elite’?

Because the inference, if not the downright accusation, is that had Sheikh Mansour bought Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal or Spurs, then the supporters of said clubs would’ve walked away in their droves never to darken their home stadiums again. Easy to say when you’re not in those shoes.

But here’s the thing. Firstly, like everybody else reading this, I don’t EVER get a say in who buys my club or what they subsequently do with it. Secondly, there was no lack of support for City when AD bought the club and, amazingly, the same thing happened when the Saudis bought Newcastle.

And I’m really going to stick my neck out here and say that if Sheikh Jassim buys either United or, as reported by F365, Spurs as an alternative, neither OT nor WHL will be empty afterwards as a result. Quite the reverse.

In that event, Liverpool and Arsenal fans (along with Utd or Spurs depending on who DOESN’T get bought) will, of course, lose their moral high ground collective sh*t and F365 will be bombarded with mails from outraged fans.

One thing that puzzles me though. If AD bought City, the Saudis’ Newcastle, and the Qataris want to buy either United or Spurs, then why did none of them want to buy Liverpool?
Mark (Just asking) MCFC.

Man City’s dominance
City’s current dominance – and make no mistake, 5 out of 6 titles is absurd dominance – is undeniably impressive. And of course, City fans want and should be able to celebrate it. For me, there are two crucial hurdles to overcome before there’s no asterisk to be added:

Firstly, despite all the revisionism on the success of Arsenal/United in the 90’s (and then 00’s) neither of those teams spent anywhere near the level of magnitude more than other clubs that initially Chelsea and then City did when ‘ramping up’. If anything, City should be thanking United’s utterly inept ownership – if you take United off the gross spend of wages/transfers there’s no one near City (up until whatever Boehly is doing). This really is the point – for more than a decade one team has spent the most on transfers and wages virtually every season. It has successfully brought in a dozen players for big money who didn’t work out, and happily replaced them with better players at big money. Every window, every season. That’s City’s advantage. In isolation, yes, VVD, Allison and Maguire are more expensive. But City brought in 5 players in each position, and now have it right. Is that impressive? I don’t know.

This City team does not have to bring in a Macheda to score a crucial goal. Pep isn’t forced to make many compromises. City has built the luxury of having the best squad in history, with one of the best managers. And do not falsely equivocate – no squad has ever been assembled at this high a cost over such a long period.

Secondly, how much cheating can you justify? It seems City fans are fine to have made up sponsors so they could purchase, say Aguero. But what if it turns out the only reason Sergio was at City was an off-the-books second salary, hidden from view? Does that change anything? City fans kind of have to be binary on this and reduce it to nihilism: money in football was absurd already, so any breaking of rules is justified because the system is so flawed. I have sympathy with the view that the system is broken, but if you sign up for a competition and agree to a set of rules, you should get punished if you break them.

Regardless, congrats and enjoy. In the end, this will likely be a short moment in history where a team is this good. If you can separate that from the above, as well as the reason Abu Dhabi are even involved, that’s wonderful.

‘Bad news’ for fans of Premier League winners
I have some bad news for the various Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City fans flooding the mailbox, arguing whose title was most exciting: nobody who doesn’t follow your club ever really cheered them on to any title, ever.

No matter how exciting you think it was, or how well deserved: the rest of the world doesn’t care or remember.

We definitely don’t think your club’s triumph represents the glory days of the Premier League. We just don’t give a sh*t.

The one exception to this is Leicester. We ALL loved it when Leicester beat all of you.

‘The Unbearable Boringness of Citeh’
In the realm of American sports, I’ve always enjoyed college basketball and football much more than the NBA and NFL. Play in the pro leagues is too smooth and efficient and looks like a video game. In contrast, in college sports, there is always the very real possibility of an unpredictable play or an incredible upset.

And this brings me to Citeh. Citeh is to the rest of the Premier League as American pro sports are to their college sports. My main problem with Citeh is not that they are so corrupted (even though they are) and not that they are unbeatable (even though they are). My problem is that watching Citeh play is profoundly boring.

Boring as in you just know that they’ll make their next pass. Boring as in you know that they’ll score the next goal. Boring as in you know they’ll win the next game. Boring as in you know they’ll win the league again. Everything about them is so smooth and tight and controlled, just like the top of Pep’s head. There is no drama. There is no soul.

They have become a juggernaut by eliminating every vestige of human foible from the game. It may make for a great trophy acquisition, but it most certainly does not make for a beautiful game.

Developing country voices will be excluded at UN plastic talks, say NGOs

Scientists and NGOs have accused the UN’s environment programme (Unep) of locking out those “most needing to be heard” from upcoming negotiations in Paris aimed at halting plastic waste.

Last-minute restrictions to the numbers of NGOs attending what the head of Unep described as the “most important multilateral environmental deal” in a decade will exclude people from communities in developing countries harmed by dumping and burning of plastic waste as well as marginalised waste pickers, who are crucial to recycling, from fully participating, they said.

The groups criticised the agency for publishing a report this week, before negotiations between 193 countries over 29 May to 2 June, which they claimed did not fully reflect the health and environmental effects of plastic pollution. The report said mismanaged plastic waste could be slashed by 80% by 2040.

Scientists’s Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty (Scept), representing 200 scientists who were invited to comment before the report’s publication, said their concerns and criticisms were ignored.

Unep said it regretted that “due to a technical issue” an email containing Scept comments was not received in time for publication. However, it said it received feedback from 75 experts from 39 organisations that were incorporated. It denied claims its report did not sufficiently reflect the health and environmental impacts of plastic.

Rich Gower, a senior economist for Tearfund, an international NGO that provides advocacy and support to waste pickers, said: “This last-minute restriction locks out those who most need to be heard. It’s vital that negotiators hear from those with firsthand experience of plastic pollution: waste pickers, communities harmed by dumping and burning, and those living near toxic production plants.

“Without these groups’ voices the treaty will fail to be the life-changing instrument we desperately need it to be.”

The Tearfund partner and campaigner Tiwonge Mzumara-Gawa, from Malawi, who will now share a pass with four colleagues after NGOs were told only one in five people would have access to negotiations, said: “World leaders must hear real stories from people in countries where the plastics treaty could have a life-changing impact. In Malawi we don’t have organised public waste collection and many people are forced to either dump or burn their waste. It’s extremely disappointing that my colleagues and I will now have much less access to these talks.”

Therese Karlsson, a science adviser at International Pollutants Elimination Network and member of Scept, said: “We were asked to review the report. Thirty scientists provided over 300 comments. We have several major concerns, one around the framing of the report, which is very focused on technological solutions in a very optimistic way, even although those technical solutions are not proven.”

“This creates a narrative that makes is easy to think we can fix our way out of this. But we need to talk about chemicals from plastics and decrease the use of plastics.”

One concern, she said, was the inclusion of chemical recycling, which was “not recognised as environmentally sound management” under the Basel convention, as a possible interim solution.

Bethanie Carney Almroth, a professor of toxicology at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and a member of Scept, said: “For a group that have called on scientists, they have locked us out of the room and they have not registered our criticisms.”.

Andrés Del Castillo, a senior attorney at the Center for International Environmental Law, said: “The headline figure of the Unep report predicts an 80% reduction of plastics pollution with the proposed ‘new plastics economy’. This number does not represent a reduction, but rather a narrowing of the scope and definition of what is considered plastic pollution from a full life cycle perspective.”

The “reduction”, which refers to a decrease in plastic waste into the environment, did not count other elements of plastic pollution, such as upstream greenhouse gas emissions and toxic emissions, he said.

NGOs have expressed concern over the report’s inclusion of burning plastic waste in cement kilns as one of several strategies to address the plastics crisis.

Dr Neil Tangri, the science and policy director at Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, said: “Burning plastic waste in cement kilns is a ‘get out of jail free card’ for the plastic industry to keep ramping up plastic production by claiming that the plastic problem can be simply burned away.”

A spokesperson for Unep said NGOs were informed at registration that the venue, which has a capacity of 1,500, had space constraints. However, 640 or 40% of attendees were from NGOs, it said. It denied claims its report insufficiently considered the health and environmental impacts of plastic pollution.

It said: “A large part of the economic costs associated with plastics pollution, assessed at the outset of the report, are due to human health impacts … well over one-third of the estimated $300bn a year costs stemming from plastic pollution are related to exposure to hazardous chemicals.

“The report builds on this evidence to call for the need to completely transform the plastics economy. On waste management the report proposes changes that affect the whole life cycle, from raw materials extraction and processing, with a significant focus on design needs (design of both products and systems), use and reuse, and indeed highlighting the importance of strengthening waste collection and management.”

Unep denied the report presented chemical recycling and cement kilns burning plastic as fuel as part of the solution to plastics problem, saying they were simply “options when safe disposal facilities are to be used as a last resort to avoid plastic leaking into the environment and stresses the needs for emissions (and/or effluent) control and standards to assure safety.

“The potential lock-in effect of purpose-built facilities such as incinerators and plastic-to-fuel plants is highlighted as something to be avoided,” it said.

As you join us today from Indonesia we hope you will consider supporting us in our efforts to do something about this. Despite the financial challenges plaguing the media industry, we’ve decided to keep our journalism paywall-free, because we believe everyone has the right to high-quality, fact-checked reporting. The extent of the devastation comes as the climate crisis worsens in Somalia

Jamal Ali Abdi has seen flooding in Beledweyne before but never on the scale witnessed earlier this month when the Shabelle River burst its banks, causing devastation to the central Somali town and displacing almost the entire population.

As water gushed through the streets, Ali’s home was soon surrounded by murky brown flood water.

“The water was up to my neck,” said Ali, 36. “Our entire family, including my six children, sought refuge in a relative’s home after our house was immersed. I was barely able to get my children to safety and grab a couple of items as we fled.

“We haven’t seen flooding on this scale in years,” he added. “No one saw this level of devastation coming.”

Nearly 250,000 people have been forced to leave their homes after heavy rainfall in Somalia and the Ethiopian highlands led to flash floods in Beledweyne, the capital of the Hiran region. A week on from the start of the flooding the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) called for urgent funding to scale up assistance, while the Somali Disaster Management Agency distributed aid to displaced families this week.

Somalia is suffering the effects of the worst drought in four decades, a result of the climate crisis. But OCHA Southern and Eastern Africa warned that the recent precipitation will not counter the devastation caused by years of below-average rainfall.

In 2019, local people built a defensive wall on the banks of the Shabelle, which has helped prevent flooding during previous heavy rains but could not withstand the force of the water this time.

Like many members of his community, Ali fled to a relative’s home, where he is sharing a room with two other displaced families.

“You don’t have to be here with us to know how difficult it is when you have three families sharing a single room, not knowing when you’ll return home and if the floods left anything behind,” he said.

But the house they escaped to is also surrounded by water, raising fears that they will have to move again. “Everyone is scared that the water will rise,” said Ali, speaking by phone from Beledweyne.

His fears are widely shared. Hassan Abdi fled with his wife and seven children from their home in the Bundooyinka neighbourhood of Beledweyne on the first day of the flooding. As the water began seeping under his front door, Abdi, 37, decided to take his children to an empty house owned by a friend.

“When I left with my children, I thought the flooding would be short lived,” he said. “We’ve endured many floods before. After resettling my family, I returned home to take whatever I could but it started getting close to dusk, so I made the decision to spend the night there.

“The water level was at my toes initially, but by the time I woke up the following morning, it was knee high. That’s when I knew things would be different this time. I’ve witnessed six floods since moving here in 1997 and this is the worst.

“My children are still very young. Sometimes I wonder if they understand that they’ve become displaced and that this empty home might become our permanent home,” added Abdi, who is unemployed and depends on remittances from siblings in the diaspora to support his family. “I don’t believe there’s anything my siblings can do for my family. There are certain things that money can’t fix and a natural disaster is one of them.”

23:14 The Tiny Hole in the Airplane Window Is So Much Useful than We Could Ever Imagine
The Tiny Hole in the Airplane Window Is So Much Useful than We Could Ever Imagine

Being stuck in a 10-hour flight with six babies onboard can leave you with no choice but to entertain yourself. Lucky you if you’re on the window side as at least you can see a different view apart from the boredom staring back at you inside the plane.

While looking out for the greenery down below or the sea of clouds the aircraft smashes through, you suddenly see a small hole at the bottom of that 12-inch rectangular pane — fret not, you did not break it because all other windows have the same minuscule disruption.

Airplane Window Composition
The tiny opening you must have observed by now is not really for aesthetic purposes. It even looks misplaced and unnecessary at its spot, but little did we know that it serves a function that is much more important to us travelers.

First of all, let us understand the anatomy of an airplane window. It consists of three separate acrylic panes, so when you peep outside to check, you are actually seeing things from transparent layers.

The first of which is the one you can touch, tap, or even scratch from the comfort of your seat, the middle where the hole is located, and the outer, which is in touch with the clouds, British Airways pilot Mark Vanhoenacker wrote in “Slate.”

All three panes have specific jobs and not just there to fit the mold of the aircraft. The outer and middle panes have a space called the air gap.

The inner one is to protect the two others. Together, all layers keep us safe. But before we understand how that actually happens, let’s learn a thing about air pressure first.

Air Pressure
For those who don’t know, flying up above causes a change in air pressure, as when you’re mountain climbing.

However, you don’t really notice any difference with the air and that’s because of the hole, oftentimes called bleed or breather hole, and the aircraft’s pumping of conditioned air that is the same as when you’re on the ground, which makes you comfortable as you travel.

Because of this, passengers would not pass out or worse, suffer from hypoxia, whose complications include death.

However, as the plane gets higher and higher, the air gets thinner and if you are exposed to it, you will likely experience shortness of breath.

Normally, we are used to 14.6 pounds per square inch of air pressure, this is how we breathe on the ground.

But when you fly about 35,000 feet above, the pressure dives to just 3.47 pounds per square inch, so inside the cabin, around 11 pounds per square inch is maintained.

Because the air in and out of the airplane is not balanced, that on the inside would find a way to get outside.

Work of the Tiny Hole
The tiny hole works somewhat like a mediator between the air inside and outside, balancing the air pressure.

While the passengers are safely traveling, the strain gets greater as the plane reaches higher altitude and that’s where the breather hole enters: it helps to unburden the pressure on the cabin.

Needless to say, the outer layer takes the most work, but in the event it shatters, the middle and inner panes are still available.

The equilibrium of the air pressure is not just what the bleed hole accomplishes, it also acts to prevent fog and moisture, which has something to do with the difference of the temperatures inside and outside of the cabin.

Harry Kane drops hint he will turn down a transfer to Man Utd and stay at Tottenham

Harry Kane is ready to join everyone at Tottenham by pushing “in the same direction” amid rumours he could leave for Manchester United in the summer.

Spurs, who had looked in the driving seat to finish in the top four only a couple of months ago, will now miss out on Champions League football and have to settle for another trophyless season.

The lack of silverware almost drove Kane out of the club a couple of years ago with Manchester City attempting to lure the England international away from his boyhood club.

However, despite appearing to be in favour of a move away from Tottenham, Kane stayed and many see this summer as crucial to his long-term future.

With Kane turning 30 in July and only having one year left on his contract, it’s likely that he will either sign a new deal at Tottenham or leave for pastures new.

A report earlier this year insisted that Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag was now ‘sold’ on the idea of bringing Kane to Old Trafford but another outlet recently claimed that the England striker is ‘open’ to running his contract down with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy unwilling to sell to United.

But in an interview Kane claims that he believes Tottenham are not far away from success and silverware if they can bring in “the right people” in the summer.

Spurs are currently sixth in the Premier League table with Ryan Mason appointed caretaker manager until the end of the season last month after Antonio Conte and then Cristian Stellini were sacked in quick succession.

Kane said: “It’s been a difficult season.

“Probably the last couple of years we haven’t been where we want to be as a club, so there’s some internal stuff we need to talk about.”

Kane added: “We need to discuss standards around the team and the training ground, which we need to get back to. We had those in place when Mauricio Pochettino was here.”

Julian Nagelsmann, Xabi Alonso and Arne Slot are among the favourites to take the permanent manager role at Tottenham and Kane has faith everyone at the club can now “push in the same direction”.

Kane, who has scored 26 Premier League goals this season, continued: “The chairman will make a decision on what he thinks is best for the club, in terms of the coach and who he wants to bring in, the players to go and who he wants to bring in.

“I always think you’re never too far away from being competitive with the right people. But also, you’re never too far away from dropping down to tenth because that is the standard.

“It’s an important moment to feel a connection again with the fans, who I know have been frustrated. We need to try to build that relationship back up and try to all push in the same direction.”
