New Easter Island moai statue discovered in volcano crater

A new moai – one of Easter Island’s iconic monolithic statues – has been found in the bed of a dry lake in a volcano crater, the Indigenous community that administers the site on the Chilean island has said.

The statue was found on 21 February by a team of scientific volunteers from three Chilean universities who were collaborating on a project to restore the marshland in the crater inside the Rano Raraku volcano.

Binghamton University researchers found that Easter Island’s moai statues were built close to sources of fresh water.

“This moai has great potential for scientific and natural studies – it’s a really unique discovery as it’s the first time that that a moai has been discovered inside a laguna [lake] in a Rano Raraku crater,” the Ma’u Henua Indigenous community said in a statement on Tuesday.

Several moai in that area suffered charring in an October forest fire on the island, which is also known as Rapa Nui and lies 3,500km west of Chile.

“This moai is in the centre of a laguna that began drying up in 2018,” said the director of the Ma’u Henua community that administers the Rapa Nui national park, where the volcano is found.

“The interesting thing is that, for at least the last 200 or 300 years, the laguna was three metres deep, meaning no human being could have left the moai there in that time.”

Moai are distinctive monolithic carved stone figures with elongated faces and no legs that were mostly quarried from tuff, a kind of volcanic ash, at the Rano Raraku volcano.

This Moai is 1.60 metres tall and was found lying down on its side looking at the sky.

It was “full-bodied with recognisable features but no clear definition”, the Ma’u Henua statement said, adding that the group was looking for finance to carry out a more extensive study on the discovery.

However, there were “no plans to remove the moai from where it is”.

The Rano Raraku volcano and its Moai are a Unesco world heritage site. Easter Island was long inhabited by Polynesian people, before Chile annexed it in 1888.

The Rano Raraku volcano and its Moai are a Unesco world heritage site. Easter Island was long inhabited by Polynesian people, before Chile annexed it in 1888.

The Rano Raraku volcano and its Moai are a Unesco world heritage site. Easter Island was long inhabited by Polynesian people, before Chile annexed it in 1888.

Scholes defends MU star slaughtered by Neville and Keane I feel sorry for him

Paul Scholes has leapt to the defence of Bruno Fernandes after Gary Neville and Roy Keane branded him a “disgrace” after his antics in Manchester United’s mauling at the hands of Liverpool.

Fernandes was seen frequently throwing his arms in the air in disgust during the game and Neville said his display was “embarrassing”.

“Bruno Fernandes is asking why it’s not him [coming off]. Honestly, some of his behaviour has been a disgrace, [even if] he’s been brilliant at times, his assists and goals,”

The former right-back later added: “The second half has been a disgrace, a shambles, epitomised by Fernandes who has been embarrassing at times. It’s not their usual performance, spirit or form. [Erik ten Hag] will deal with it.”

“I start with the captain. You don’t throw your hands up, you run back. I’ve had enough of him throwing his arms up at team-mates and not running back. He got pushed in the chest and goes down holding his face. I think Ten Hag will deal with him very strongly in the next 48 hours. It was a disgrace.”

Roy Keane added: “Fernandes’ body language today was disgraceful. He’s a really talented boy, he’s your captain. But his body language, waving his arms not running back, you wouldn’t be happy with him.”

But Keane and Neville’s former United teammate Scholes explained why he felt sorry for Fernandes, instead pointing the finger of blame at a couple of players who aren’t “at the level” required to play for the Red Devils.

“I actually feel sorry for him when he’s played,” Scholes told Premier League Productions after the match.

“He’s been pushed out to many positions to do a job for the team. He was on the left today, he’s been on the right, he’s played through the middle – he has been a little bit all over the place.

“You can’t say any of the players performed the way they should have done but I thought he was especially poor today, it wasn’t his greatest afternoon. But I think there are a couple of players in that team that when it comes to big games like this I don’t think they’re quite at the level.”

Scholes defends Man Utd star slaughtered by Neville and Keane I feel sorry for him

16:06 The Lichen Planus and Oral Cancer Connection
The Lichen Planus and Oral Cancer Connection

Lichen planus is a disease that can occur on the skin or inside the mouth. While doctors don't know the cause of lichen planus, they do know that it is a noninfectious disease, meaning you can't catch it or spread it. They also know that it lasts a long time and tends to come back.

Lichen planus is classified as an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases occur when the body's defense system, made up of white blood cells that usually fight off infections, attack normal parts of the body.

Lichen planus of the skin usually causes red, itchy bumps, and as the bumps heal they may leave brown spots behind. Allergic-type reactions to some blood pressure, heart, and arthritis medications can cause lichen planus. In these cases, once the medication is stopped, lichen planus goes away.

Understanding Oral Lichen Planus

Oral lichen planus can occur anywhere inside the mouth, but is usually seen on the inside of the cheeks and appears as thin white lines, patches, or dots. It is most common between the ages of 30 and 60. While it appears in about one to two percent of the population, women get oral lichen planus twice as often as men.

Lichen Planus and Mouth Cancer

Oral lichen planus that appears as white spots or fine lines is probably not related to mouth cancer, but in about 40 percent of cases a more serious type develops. This "erosive" lichen planus causes painful sores and ulcers in the mouth. It's possible that about 1 percent to 5 percent of these cases may turn into oral cancer.

"We commonly see lichen planus inside the cheeks of women, and this is not the population or the area where we see oral cancer," says William M. Lydiatt, MD, director of head and neck surgical oncology at University of Nebraska Medical Center. "It may be that the erosive form combined with longstanding chronic irritation can become oral cancer, but the evidence is not very strong."

While lichen planus very rarely leads to oral cancer, irritation of lichen planus by tobacco and alcohol, poorly fitting dentures, and poor oral hygiene can turn lichen planus into the erosive type. It is probably the combination of these irritants over time along with erosive lichen planus that leads to oral cancer.

Managing Lichen Planus

Once you have been diagnosed with oral lichen planus, you should be checked by an oral specialist two to four times a year. Your doctor will make note of any changes and take some tissue to look at under the microscope if necessary to make sure there are no signs of oral cancer. It's also important to get regular dental care and maintain good oral hygiene. Although there is no medication to cure the condition, treatments are available to relieve the soreness of erosive lichen planus. Ask your doctor or dentist what they recommend.

If you have lichen planus, you should also be careful to avoid:

All tobacco and alcohol products. These can cause lichen planus to become more serious and may lead to oral cancer. Do not drink alcoholic beverages or use any mouthwash solutions that contain alcohol.

Stress. Some doctors believe that there is a relationship between stress and flare-ups of lichen planus. And stress management is always a good thing; so take steps to manage your stress levels and you may reduce your risk of lichen planus while you enjoy a more relaxed outlook on life.

Taking precautions and getting routine checkups will go a long way toward relieving worries about lichen planus and may help prevent those rare cases of mouth cancer from developing.

Sofia Perez will never forget her husband’s reaction two years ago to the news that she had stage 2 breast cancer.

“Although he could sense something wasn’t right as soon as we sat down in our living room, he didn’t ask any questions until after I told him what was going on,” she says.

His reaction after that brought tears to her eyes.

“He held me tightly while reassuring me that everything would be okay and that we would make it through this together no matter what happened next or how difficult things might become along the way,” says Perez, now 42.

Her husband’s response was exactly right, notes Jennifer Gregg, PhD, a clinical psychologist in the Bay Area and an associate professor of psychology at San Jose State University in California.

“Listening and expressing support is what a partner needs to do when a breast cancer diagnosis is first shared,” Dr. Gregg says.

Perez was wise, too, in being direct and explaining the situation soon after she was diagnosed without getting too deep in the weeds about her treatment or prognosis, Gregg adds.

Breaking the news that you’ve got cancer can feel overwhelming, which is why Gregg recommends that you first think about your feelings, “so you walk into the discussion with an awareness of them.”

Expressing what you need is also helpful, she adds. “Do you want the person to check in with you about the process, or wait for you to bring it up? Or do you want an ear to talk to, or somebody to help you cope by helping you see the bright side?” Either way, it’s best to think about your own intentions and what you want.

“It’s important to note that, at first, men may need fewer specifics on things like surgery options or staging,” she says. “They may need more information, instead, about how you’re feeling, what your worries are, and what they need to do to support you.”

Then, once your partner begins asking for details, like whether you’ll need chemotherapy or radiation, or if you’re going to lose your breast, it’s always ideal to be direct in your answer.

“Saying something like, ‘I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen yet’ is one way to go about this,” Gregg says. “You can also add, ‘This might be hard for you, sweetie. I want to make sure that if I end up needing a mastectomy that you get support about this,’ which gives your partner permission to request their own support.”

You also want to do your best to keep all the lines of communication open even when you don’t have all the answers.

“Lots of times partners feel like they can’t ask questions or they shouldn’t react in any way that might make them seem less sympathetic,” Gregg says. “We find that men are worried about coming off as a jerk, so they don’t express their concerns or struggles, and that’s not great, either.”

How to Talk About Hereditary Risk
Since a breast cancer diagnosis may have implications for male family members, it’s also important to discuss hereditary risk, according to Mary Dev, LCSW, a senior social work counselor at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. This is especially critical if you’ve had genetic testing that revealed you’re a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene carrier.

“Once you know what your genetic situation is, be honest with your family, including the men in your family,” Dev says. “While many families and cultures don’t talk about this, you don’t want your family members to be blindsided by something that has been in your family tree all along.”

Again, keep the explanation simple. “Say something like ‘This is my situation,’” she says. “‘It’s now part of our family history, so we need to see if anyone else in the family is at risk. This will help us make other decisions if needed.’”

How to Ask for Help
When it comes to asking for help from the men in your family, don’t expect anyone to read your mind and know exactly what you need.

“Most people want to help out,” Dev says. “They may just need direction; so, if your husband isn’t a good cook, maybe he can find a way to outsource this among friends and neighbors.”

Throughout the process, touch base with the men in your life frequently, Dev recommends. For example, if you want them to come to your doctor’s appointments and treatments, make that clear.

“When couples don’t talk that’s a red flag,” Dev notes. “You want to be sure to continue talking about your concerns, which will keep changing throughout your breast cancer experience.”

This includes being honest with your partner about how your breast cancer is affecting your relationship.

“Be honest if you fear it will affect your sex life, and don’t assume that it will be a turnoff for your partner,” Dev says. “The more you communicate, the more information you’re giving your partner to support you.”

Or, just follow Perez’s husband’s lead.

“He showed immense strength during such a vulnerable time by being there for me without fail,” says Perez, who finished treatment two months ago and is now in remission. “From helping me make appointments for doctor’s visits, providing comfort where needed or simply listening, his support meant more than anything else in those moments of uncertainty and fear following my diagnosis.”

Whats the Difference Between Body Positivity and Body Neutrality?

Body positivity has been a popular phrase among lifestyle influencers in recent years. But the roots of the modern body positivity movement are far older than social media, and its original mission was quite different to some of the messages you see today.

Now, the body positivity hashtag often accompanies photos of relatively thin women talking about learning to love their “flaws.” This isn’t exactly what the folks who started the body positivity movement had in mind, and the idea of body love or even body acceptance can seem completely out of reach for many. That’s where body neutrality, a much newer concept, comes in.

Instead of striving for all-out body love, the goal of body neutrality is to live your life without having strong feelings (good or bad) about your appearance.

Ultimately, both approaches (body positivity and body neutrality) are about fostering a healthy body image, defined by the American Psychological Association (APA) as the mental picture one forms of one’s body as a whole, including its physical characteristics and one’s attitudes toward these characteristics.

If you’re curious about body positivity and body neutrality, or wondering which one might be right for you, here’s more about each concept and the differences between them.

Why the Body Positivity Movement Started and What It Means Today

“Body positivity is a movement that believes all people deserve to have a positive body image,” says Brit Guerin, a licensed mental health counselor and co-owner of Current Wellness, a weight-inclusive wellness center in Raleigh, North Carolina. “This movement encourages folx to love their bodies just as they are.”

It’s important because body image does significantly affect our physical and mental health. A study published in September 2016 in PLoS One found that better body image was associated with a better overall quality of life for adults and teenagers. A study published in March 2015 in the journal Body Image found that adults with a positive body image typically had better self-esteem and less depression than those with a negative body image, and were less likely to engage in unhealthy dieting behaviors.

But while body positivity has become personal — it’s about individuals feeling better about their own bodies — its roots are more political. Many sources trace the body positivity movement back to 1969 and the creation of the National Association to Aid Fat Americans (NAAFA), now called the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance.

Tigress Osborn, an equity and inclusion consultant and the current chair of NAAFA, explains that the organization was started in response to the discrimination people in larger bodies face (and still face), with the goal of making the world more accessible to and accepting of people in fat bodies.

The term “body positivity” started showing up in the 1990s, Osborn says, as a way for fat activists and others in marginalized bodies — primarily Black and brown women and femmes, people who are disabled, and those who identified as + — to stand against oppressive body and beauty standards.

Now, body positivity is often associated with “the woman who weighs 15 pounds more than society thinks she’s ‘supposed’ to weigh, pinching her thigh roll, and talking about how she’s accepting herself,” Osborn says. “That’s not as radical as having a nonbinary Black or brown person who weighs 350 pounds showing their body and saying, ‘I’m going to live my best life.’”

Where Body Neutrality Comes From and What It Means Today
“Body neutrality is neither having strong feelings against or affirming your body,” says Sasha Jackson, LCSW, a therapist in private practice in Patterson, California.

How to Work Towards Body Positivity or Body Neutrality

1. Focus on What Your Body Can Do
A good first step is to focus more on what your body can do. Jackson recommends writing down three things your body does for you, like allowing you to play with your kids or helping you stand as you wash the dishes. “This exercise will help you identify and build genuine gratitude,” she says.

2. Reconnect With Your Senses
Then, tune into your senses as a way to further connect with your body. Identify ways in which each of your five senses helps you interact with the world. For example, my sense of touch helps me snuggle with my pet, or my sense of taste allows me to appreciate ice cream. “This exercise will help you to build appreciation and focus your attention on what your body does for you,” Jackson says.

3. Seek Help if You Need It
If you’re experiencing severe body image distress, seek out a qualified therapist who can help you work through it. If you don’t already work with a mental health professional, you can ask your primary-care provider to refer you to a therapist who specializes in body image, or search for local body-inclusive therapists through directories like Inclusive Therapists or the Health at Every Size Community. And no matter how you choose to approach body positivity or body neutrality, remember that changing your relationship with your body will take time.

19:45 Fulham 2-0 Lead Silvas squad won in all Premier League FA Cup matches
Fulham 2-0 Lead Silva's squad won in all Premier League FA Cup matches

Fulham are through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after a 2-0 victory against Premier League rivals Leeds United.

Both goals showcased individual skill, with Manor Solomon’s curled effort second only to a stunning strike from distance to break the deadlock from Joao Palhinha.

Leeds continued to show improvement since Javi Gracia’s appointment but were unable to book a place in the last eight for the first time in 20 years despite having a number of chances, including a slightly controversial disallowed goal.

Fulham, who have exceeded all expectations in the top flight this year, reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2009-10.

Georginio Rutter thought he had scored his first goal for Leeds when he tapped the ball home after Marek Rodak had palmed the ball into the path of the 20-year-old, but referee Chris Kavanagh ruled it out for a soft foul in the area and VAR did not intervene.

It was Fulham who took the lead after 21 minutes when Palhinha capitalised after intercepting an attempted pass. The Portugal international drove forward before expertly curling the ball into the top corner with a stunning finish for his first club goal since December.

Leeds came close again in the final moments of first-half stoppage time when Wilfried Gnonto’s looped ball into the box was headed goalwards by Rutter, but the ball dropped onto the inside of the post and Fulham were able to clear.

Rodak was called into action early in the second half, parrying behind a Gnonto shot after he was played in by Crysencio Summerville.

Leeds continued to test the goalkeeper and started the second half significantly more brightly than the hosts.

Just as the visitors had been piling on the pressure for an equaliser, it was Fulham who doubled their lead through the in-form Solomon.

The winger, on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk, curled in from the edge of the box after playing a one-two with Aleksandar Mitrovic to create the opening.

Solomon has impressed in recent weeks after a difficult season when he spent almost five months on the sidelines after sustaining a serious knee injury, with his recovery carefully managed by the club.

After going 2-0 up the hosts continued to push, with Mitrovic having a goal ruled out for offside, and despite a flurry of chances for Leeds in the final 10 minutes, Rodak remained equal to them.
